Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Returning to Nigeria: when you become tax resident again

Under the 2025 Act one link, such as a home available to you, can make you resident. What that means for your year of return and foreign income.

The short answer

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, in force from 1 January 2026, you are a Nigerian tax resident if any one test is met: domicile, a permanent home available to you, habitual abode, 183 days or more in Nigeria in any 12-month period, or substantial economic or immediate family ties. For most returnees that means residence starts as soon as they move back into a home here, and from then Nigeria taxes their income from all countries, with some foreign investment income exempt when brought in through approved channels.

The residence tests under the 2025 Act

Before 2026, many people thought of Nigerian tax residence mainly as a 183-day count. The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 widened the tests. According to PwC's Worldwide Tax Summaries (reviewed 29 May 2026), an individual is resident if any of these applies:

  • Domiciled in Nigeria.
  • Has a permanent place available for domestic use in Nigeria.
  • Has a habitual abode in Nigeria.
  • Is in Nigeria for 183 days or more in any 12-month period, counting temporary absences.
  • Has substantial economic or immediate family ties to Nigeria.
  • Serves as a Nigerian diplomat abroad.

PwC adds that a person is non-resident only if all of these are absent. That is the key point for returnees: you do not have to wait 183 days. Moving back into a flat you rent or own, or relocating your spouse and children, can be enough on its own.

From when are you taxed?

Once resident, Nigeria taxes your income "irrespective of the country where they may arise", in PwC's words. Non-residents are taxed only on income earned in or derived from Nigeria, as Mondaq's summary of the Act (5 January 2026) puts it. The practical question is the year of arrival. The summaries we read do not describe a formal split-year rule. If you arrive mid-year, ask an adviser how income earned abroad before the move is treated, and keep evidence of the date you moved: flight records, a tenancy start date, school enrolment and the date you left your foreign job.

What is taxed and what is not after you return

Income after you are residentTreatment (per published summaries)
Nigerian salaryTaxable through PAYE at the NTA bands
Freelance or remote work for foreign clientsTaxable as a resident's income
Foreign dividends, interest, rent, royaltiesExempt if brought into Nigeria through government-approved channels (PwC)
Interest on Nigerian domiciliary accountsNo longer exempt (PwC)
Gifts from familyGains on gifted assets, other than inheritance, listed as exempt (Mondaq)

The approved-channel condition matters. Foreign investment income that you bring in through a bank or other approved route keeps its exemption; cash brought in another way may not. Keep the bank advice or transfer record for each payment, because that record is what shows the channel used.

The other country: leaving its tax net

Becoming resident here does not by itself end your residence abroad. In the UK, the tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April and residence is set by the statutory residence test, including a 183-day automatic test and an overseas test of fewer than 16 days in the UK (46 if you were not resident in the previous three years), according to GOV.UK (updated 1 October 2026). If both countries treat you as resident, the 1987 UK-Nigeria double taxation agreement has a tie-breaker in Article 4(2): permanent home first, then centre of vital interests, habitual abode and nationality. The treaty also gives credit for tax paid in the other country (Article 22). For the US and Canada, see US tax facts for green card holders and Nigeria and Canada tax facts.

A worked example

An example returnee earns a Nigerian salary of ₦12,000,000 in her first full calendar year back. Using the NTA bands reported by PwC, and ignoring reliefs such as pension and rent relief for simplicity:

BandIncome in bandRateTax
First ₦800,000₦800,0000%₦0
Next ₦2,200,000₦2,200,00015%₦330,000
Next ₦9,000,000₦9,000,00018%₦1,620,000
Total₦12,000,000₦1,950,000

Check: ₦800,000 + ₦2,200,000 + ₦9,000,000 = ₦12,000,000; ₦330,000 + ₦1,620,000 = ₦1,950,000. Reliefs reduce the taxable amount, so her real bill would be lower. If she also receives rent from a flat she kept in Manchester, the treaty lets the UK tax that rent where the property is (Article 6), with credit given in Nigeria.

Steps for the year you move

  1. Write down your move date and keep the evidence.
  2. Tell your foreign tax authority and employer you are leaving, and file the final return they require.
  3. Make sure you have a Nigerian tax identity; the NGEX diaspora guide hosted by NiDCOM says NIN serves as the tax ID for individuals.
  4. Bring foreign investment income in through a bank so the approved-channel exemption can apply.
  5. Keep statements of foreign accounts; see does Nigeria tax income you earn abroad and the 183-day rule.

Where Pryme fits

Keeping foreign income separate and traceable helps at tax time. A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each (multicurrency), and you can generate a verifiable statement, in partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, that anyone can check is genuine and unaltered (receipts and statements).

Questions people ask

When do I become a tax resident in Nigeria after returning?

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 you are resident if any one test is met, including having a permanent home available in Nigeria or 183 days' presence in any 12-month period. For many returnees, residence starts on moving back.

Is the 183-day rule the only test for Nigerian tax residence?

No. Since 1 January 2026 the tests also include domicile, a permanent home, habitual abode and substantial economic or family ties. You are non-resident only if all are absent.

Will Nigeria tax my foreign pension or rent after I move back?

Residents are taxed on worldwide income, but foreign dividends, interest, rent and royalties brought in through approved channels are exempt, per PwC. Treaties such as the UK-Nigeria agreement can also allocate taxing rights.

Can I be tax resident in Nigeria and the UK in the same year?

Yes. The UK-Nigeria double taxation agreement's Article 4(2) tie-breaker then decides, starting with where you have a permanent home, and credit is given for tax paid.
