Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigeria and US tax: what green card holders and citizens face

There is no US-Nigeria income tax treaty. What US persons report on Nigerian income, when FBAR applies, and how double tax is usually handled.

The short answer

US citizens and green card holders are generally taxed by the US on worldwide income, so Nigerian rent, interest and business income go on the US return. There is no US-Nigeria income tax treaty: Nigeria is absent from the IRS treaty list. Separately, if your Nigerian and other foreign accounts together exceeded $10,000 at any time in the year, you file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) by 15 April, with an automatic extension to 15 October.

Why the US position is different

Most countries tax people on residence. The United States generally taxes its citizens and lawful permanent residents (green card holders) on worldwide income wherever they live; the IRS sets this out in its guidance for US taxpayers abroad, including Publication 54. A Nigerian American in Atlanta and a green card holder who has moved back to Abuja are both expected to report Nigerian income on their US return.

On the Nigerian side, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 makes you a Nigerian resident if any one of six tests applies, such as 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, a permanent home here, or substantial economic or family ties (PwC Worldwide Tax Summaries, reviewed 29 May 2026). A non-resident is taxed by Nigeria only on Nigerian-source income (Mondaq, 5 January 2026). So a green card holder living in Lagos can owe tax to both countries on the same salary.

No treaty: what that means

The IRS page "United States income tax treaties - A to Z" (updated 3 January 2026) lists Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway under N. Nigeria is not there. In practice:

  • No treaty tie-breaker decides residence if both countries claim you.
  • No treaty caps on Nigerian withholding tax for US persons; Nigerian domestic rates apply.
  • Relief from double tax comes from US domestic law, mainly the foreign tax credit, rather than from a treaty.
  • US persons living in Nigeria may also look at the foreign earned income exclusion; an adviser can tell you whether you qualify.

Compare that with the UK-Nigeria treaty or the Canada-Nigeria treaty, which both set rules for each income type.

FBAR: reporting your Nigerian accounts

The IRS FBAR page (reviewed 30 July 2026) sets the rule:

Who files
US persons, including citizens and residents, with a financial interest in or signature authority over foreign financial accounts
Threshold
Aggregate value of all foreign accounts exceeded $10,000 at any time in the calendar year
Form
FinCEN Form 114, filed through FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System, not with your tax return
Deadline
15 April after the calendar year, with an automatic extension to 15 October

Signature authority counts. If you are a signatory on your mother's account in Nigeria, or a joint holder on a family account, that account can fall in scope. Domiciliary accounts count too. See our guide to joint accounts with family.

Worked example: the $10,000 test

Example only. Funmi, a US citizen, holds a naira savings account with a peak balance worth $4,500 in March, and a dollar domiciliary account with a peak of $6,200 in August. The test adds the maximum value of each account: $4,500 + $6,200 = $10,700, which exceeds $10,000, so she files an FBAR listing both accounts, even though neither alone passed the threshold. The IRS also links a separate form, Form 8938, with its own thresholds; check whether it applies to you.

Nigerian income on your US return

Nigerian incomeNigerian sideUS side
Rent from a Nigerian flatTaxable in Nigeria; tenants that are companies deduct withholding taxReported as rental income; foreign tax credit may apply
Interest on naira savingsBank deducts withholding taxReported as interest income
Salary while living in NigeriaTaxable in Nigeria if residentReported; exclusion or credit may apply
Family gifts receivedNot incomeNot income for the recipient in the ordinary case

If you have moved back to Nigeria on a green card

Many Nigerians keep a green card while living in Lagos or Abuja for long stretches. For Nigeria, the residence tests decide your position, and living here most of the year will usually make you resident, taxable on worldwide income, including any US salary or rent. For the US, the green card generally keeps you in the US system until it is formally given up. Without a treaty, the order in which credits are claimed matters: in many cases the country where the income arises taxes first and the other gives credit, but which rule applies to which income is a question for a preparer who knows both systems.

Keep the paperwork that proves Nigerian tax was paid: a tax clearance certificate from your state revenue service, receipts for self-assessment payments, and withholding tax credit notes from tenants or clients. A US credit claim is only as strong as that evidence.

What to check first

  1. List every Nigerian account you own, share or can sign on.
  2. Record the highest balance of each in the year, converted to dollars.
  3. Keep Nigerian tax receipts and withholding credit notes for foreign tax credits.
  4. Check whether any Nigerian residence test applies to you.
  5. Use a US tax preparer familiar with foreign income.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme holds USD and NGN with local details for each, and sending or swapping leaves a clear record. When your preparer needs year-end balances, a verifiable statement with VerifyDoc.ai can be checked as genuine and unaltered.

Questions people ask

Is there a tax treaty between the US and Nigeria?

No. Nigeria does not appear on the IRS list of US income tax treaties (updated 3 January 2026).

Do I need to report my Nigerian bank account to the IRS?

If your foreign accounts together exceeded $10,000 at any time in the year, you file an FBAR (FinCEN Form 114) with FinCEN, separate from your tax return.

When is the FBAR due?

15 April after the calendar year, with an automatic extension to 15 October.

Do green card holders living in Nigeria still file US taxes?

Green card holders are generally treated like US residents for tax and report worldwide income. Check IRS guidance or a preparer for your situation.
