Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Life in Port Harcourt

Rent month in Port Harcourt: how to plan for it

How Port Harcourt tenants can plan the yearly rent payment: saving, agency and legal fees, the PHED meter check and what credit can and cannot do.

The short answer

Plan Port Harcourt rent month by dividing next year's rent, plus any agency, legal and service charges, by the months left until the due date and saving that amount each payday in a separate account. Expect your landlord to ask about renewal and any increase two to three months ahead, so negotiate early. Loans on Spaces cannot pay a landlord, because it can only be spent with Spaces merchants.

Why rent month is hard in Port Harcourt

Most residential tenancies in Port Harcourt are paid a year in advance, and some landlords ask for more. In May 2026 the National Union of Tenants of Nigeria decried the escalating cost of rent in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor, the News Agency of Nigeria reported, under the headline that 80% of Rivers residents spend their income on rent. Whatever the precise figure, a single large payment once a year is the biggest money event for most households.

The difficulty is rarely the rent alone. Renewal often lands near other annual costs, such as school fees in January or September, and new tenancies bring agency and legal fees on top.

Step 1: know the full amount

CostRenewalNew tenancy
Annual rentYesYes
Service charge (estates, shared compounds)OftenOften
Agency feeRarelyUsually
Agreement or legal feeSometimesUsually
Caution depositSometimes topped upOften
Moving costsNoYes

Ask for every line in writing. A landlord's agent who quotes only the rent may add other fees later. The national article moving house costs beyond the rent covers the extras in detail.

Step 2: save backwards from the due date

Divide the full amount by the number of paydays left. These are example figures for a one-bedroom flat in Rumuokwuta.

Annual rent (example)
₦900,000
Service charge (example)
₦60,000
Possible increase to allow for, 10% of rent (example)
₦90,000
Target
₦1,050,000
Months to due date
10
Save each month
₦105,000

Allowing for an increase you may not face is safer than discovering one two weeks before the due date. If the landlord does not raise the rent, the extra becomes next year's head start. The national guide how to save for a year's rent has more on keeping the money separate.

Step 3: negotiate early

  • Ask the landlord or caretaker about renewal terms three months before the due date.
  • If an increase is proposed, ask for it in writing and ask whether paying early or on time earns a smaller rise.
  • Mention repairs you have done or reported, especially for water, roofing and drainage problems that rainy seasons expose.
  • If you plan to move, start viewing early. Areas like Rumuodara, Eliozu, Rumuokoro, Woji and Elelenwo vary widely in rent, transport cost and flooding risk.

Protect the rent money from other claims

Rent savings attract requests: a relative's hospital bill, a wedding contribution, a business opportunity. Keeping the money in a separate place, out of your everyday account, makes it easier to say no without a long conversation. Decide in advance what, if anything, would justify dipping into it, such as a genuine medical emergency, and how you would refill it.

If you share a flat, agree each person's share and the date it moves into the rent pot. One flatmate paying late on the due date is a common cause of disputes with landlords.

Step 4: check the meter and bills before you sign

A new flat with a shared or estimated electricity bill can cost more than one with a lower rent and its own prepaid meter. Port Harcourt is served by PHED, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, which has run prepaid meter rollouts in Rivers State, The Guardian has reported. Ask whether the flat has its own meter, which band its feeder is on, and whether there are any arrears. See how to get a prepaid meter under the MAP scheme.

What credit can and cannot do

Rent is paid to a landlord, not a Spaces merchant, so Loans on Spaces cannot pay it. The loan can only be spent with merchants in the Spaces network. What it can do, if you have accepted an offer, is cover a planned spend at a Spaces merchant, such as groceries, in the month you pay rent, so your cash goes to the landlord. Do this only if your next income covers the repayment. Borrowing to free up rent money that you cannot replace simply moves the gap.

If you cannot raise the full amount

  1. Talk to the landlord early. Many landlords prefer a reliable tenant paying in two parts to an empty flat. Ask, and get any agreement in writing.
  2. Ask your employer. Some employers offer salary advances or housing support for staff.
  3. Claim what you are owed. Employees may be able to claim rent relief under the tax rules; see rent relief in Nigeria.
  4. Consider a cheaper flat early, not in the final week when choices are few and agents know you are under pressure.

Where Pryme fits

A Fixed Box on Savings Boxes can hold rent money until the due date so it is not spent in between. Your Personal Assistant, Eva by default, can remind you each payday and prepare the transfer into the Box; nothing moves without your approval. Pryme can also generate verifiable statements through VerifyDoc.ai, which helps when a new landlord asks for proof of income.

Questions people ask

How many months' rent do Port Harcourt landlords ask for?

A year in advance is common for residential flats, and some landlords ask for more. Agree the terms in writing before paying.

Can I pay my rent with Loans on Spaces?

No. Loans on Spaces can only be spent with Spaces merchants, and landlords are not merchants in the network.

How much should I save monthly for rent in Port Harcourt?

Add rent, service charge and a buffer for an increase, then divide by the months left to the due date.

What should I check before renting a flat in Port Harcourt?

Ask for all fees in writing, check whether the flat has its own prepaid meter, ask about flooding and water, and work out the commute cost.
