Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Rent guarantor companies in New York: how they work

How lease guarantee companies work in New York City, what they charge and refund, which buildings accept them, and the state and city fee rules.

The short answer

A rent guarantor company sells your New York landlord a guarantee that it will pay if you do not, in return for a fee you usually pay up front. TheGuarantors says its price is personalised to your rent, the landlord's required coverage and your profile, is non-refundable once the lease starts, and must be repaid by you if it pays the landlord. Not every building accepts these companies.

Why New Yorkers use them

Many New York City landlords look for annual income of around 40 times the monthly rent, and ask a guarantor to show more; this is landlord practice, not law. A new arrival from Nigeria on a first US salary, or a student, often cannot meet it, and a parent at home cannot act as guarantor because the landlord has no US credit or income to check. Guarantor companies fill that gap. Our page on the 40x rule explains the income test.

How the product works

  1. You apply online with the company, usually after the landlord has accepted you subject to a guarantor.
  2. The company checks your profile. TheGuarantors says it runs soft credit checks only and can approve international students, expats and people who do not meet the landlord's income requirement.
  3. It quotes a price. You pay it, or in some cases the landlord pays it for you.
  4. The company issues a guarantee to the landlord for the lease term.
  5. If you fail to pay rent, the landlord claims from the company, and the company then seeks the money from you.

What they charge, and what is refunded

Neither of the two companies whose pages we checked publishes a fixed price. Here is what each says (viewed October 2026):

PointTheGuarantors (renter FAQ)Insurent (home page)

Get a written quote before you commit and compare it with the cost of the alternatives below. Read the full terms of whichever company you use, especially the reimbursement clause.

New York rules that still apply

  • Broker fees. Under the city's FARE Act, in force since 11 June 2025, a broker working for the landlord cannot charge you a fee, and all fees you must pay have to be disclosed in writing before you sign (NYC DCWP FAQ, June 2026).
  • Screening fees. State Real Property Law 238-a limits the background and credit check fee to the actual cost or $20, whichever is less, and requires the landlord to give you the report and receipt. The fee must be waived if you provide a check from the last 30 days.
  • Deposits. General Obligations Law 7-108 says no deposit or advance shall exceed one month's rent, and the landlord must return it with an itemised statement within 14 days after you move out.

A guarantor fee is paid to a third-party company, not the landlord, so it is not a deposit. If a landlord asks for a guarantor company and extra money on top of one month's deposit, ask what the extra payment is and check it against 7-108 before paying.

Is it the right choice?

OptionUpsideDownside
Guarantor companyNo person needs to sign; can approve students and newcomersFee usually non-refundable; you still owe the money if it pays
Personal US guarantorUsually no feePuts a relative or friend on the hook; they must meet the landlord's test
Smaller flat or shared leaseLower rent means a lower income testLess space; shared liability
Employer housing helpSome employers arrange corporate leasesNot offered by every employer

Steps

  1. Ask the landlord or managing agent which guarantor companies the building accepts.
  2. Get quotes from those companies only.
  3. Read the reimbursement and refund clauses.
  4. Check every other fee against the FARE Act and the $20 screening cap.
  5. Keep the guarantee, receipt and lease together.

For the wider picture outside New York, see getting a guarantor or co-signer.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is not a guarantor company. If a landlord or guarantor company asks for proof of savings you hold in Nigeria, you can generate a verifiable statement through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai (receipts and statements), and a Pryme account holds NGN and USD with local details for each.

Questions people ask

How much do rent guarantor companies cost in NYC?

There is no fixed price. TheGuarantors says its premium is personalised by rent, required coverage and your financial profile, paid up front.

Is the guarantor fee refundable?

TheGuarantors says no once the lease starts. A refund is possible only if the lease does not go ahead, less a $100 cancellation fee.

Do all NYC buildings accept guarantor companies?

No. Ask the landlord which companies it accepts before you pay.

Can a NYC landlord charge more than one month's deposit if I use a guarantor company?

New York law says no deposit or advance shall exceed one month's rent. The guarantor fee goes to the company, not the landlord.
