Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Codes & registration

Can you register with CAC yourself without an agent?

CAMA 2020 lets you file your own business name or company on the CAC portal. What you need, the 2025 fees, and when paying an accredited agent is worth it.

The short answer

Yes. CAMA 2020 treats an agent as optional (section 36(3) only asks for the agent's details if one files for you), and the CAC portal lets individuals register business names and companies themselves. Under the fee schedule gazetted on 29 May 2025, a business name costs ₦1,000 to reserve and ₦20,000 to register. An accredited agent saves time on complex filings but is not required.

What the law says

Nothing in the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 requires you to use a lawyer, accountant or agent to register. Section 36 lists what a company application must contain: proposed name, registered office, liability type, share capital, directors and articles. Subsection (3) adds that if the application is delivered by an agent for the subscribers, it must give the agent's name and address. The agent is an option, not a condition.

For business names, Part E of the Act asks the proprietor to furnish the particulars, and many owners do so directly. Techeconomy's December 2025 guide describes the self-service route on the CAC pre-registration portal (pre.cac.gov.ng), with uploads of a valid ID and a passport photograph.

What you can do yourself

RegistrationSelf-filing realistic?CAC fees (May 2025 schedule)
Business nameYes, usually simple₦1,000 name + ₦20,000 registration
Private company, small, ₦1m share capitalYes, with care on articles and share details₦1,000 name + ₦10,000 per ₦1m capital
Company limited by guaranteePossible, but more documents₦5,000 name + ₦40,000
Incorporated trusteesPossible, but more documents₦5,000 name + ₦40,000

Example only: a solo founder registers a private company with ₦1,000,000 share capital. CAC fees are ₦1,000 + ₦10,000 = ₦11,000. With ₦2,500,000 capital, the incorporation fee is charged per ₦1m "or part thereof", so three units: ₦30,000, plus ₦1,000 for the name, ₦31,000 total. Agent fees, if any, come on top.

What to have ready before you start

  • Two or three name options, checked on the free public search first.
  • A valid ID for each owner, director or shareholder (Techeconomy lists the NIN slip, driver's licence or international passport for business names) and a clear passport photograph.
  • A full address for the business and for each person, as it will be shown on the record.
  • A short, specific description of what the business does. "General merchandise" invites queries; "retail of mobile phones and accessories" does not.
  • For a company: the share capital, how it is split between shareholders, and whether you will use standard articles.
  • A debit card or payment channel the portal accepts, and an email you check daily for queries.

Steps to register on your own

  1. Create an account on the CAC portal with a working email and phone number.
  2. Search the name and reserve it. Avoid names close to existing ones or containing restricted words; see what each suffix means.
  3. Complete the form: owner or director details, address, nature of business; for a company, shareholders, share capital and articles.
  4. Upload ID and photographs as requested, and pay online.
  5. Respond quickly to any query; most delays come from mismatched names, unclear uploads or vague business descriptions.
  6. Download the certificate and registration documents once approved.

For a business name specifically, follow our step-by-step business name guide.

When an accredited agent is worth it

CAC registers accredited agents and professionals; the May 2025 schedule lists a one-off ₦10,000 registration fee for them, which shows CAC keeps a list of who is accredited. Paying one can make sense when:

  • You have foreign shareholders, a group structure or unusual share classes.
  • You are registering incorporated trustees or a company limited by guarantee, which need constitutions and extra steps.
  • You need post-incorporation filings, share transfers or a restoration after strike-off, where errors are costly.
  • You simply value your time more than the fee and want someone to handle queries.

Protecting yourself if you use someone

  • Check they are on CAC's accredited list (see how to check an accredited agent).
  • Make sure the portal account and email are yours, or at least that you receive copies of every notification.
  • Ask for the CAC payment receipt, not just the agent's invoice, so you can see what went to CAC and what is their fee.
  • Confirm the finished entity on the free public search before you pay the balance.

After the certificate arrives

Self-filing does not end at registration. Download and store the certificate and the registration details in more than one place, register for tax with the Nigeria Revenue Service, and put the registration number on your invoices and letterhead. If you later add a partner, change the address or change directors, those are post-registration filings you can also make yourself on the same portal, each with its own fee in the schedule.

Common self-filing mistakes

  • Choosing a name that is too close to an existing one, wasting the ₦1,000 reservation.
  • Using a residential address without realising it appears on the public record. CAC charges ₦25,000 to restrict a director's or proprietor's residential address.
  • Forgetting the first annual return. Business names file by 30 June each year after the registration year (section 822); see CAC annual returns.

Where Pryme fits

After registration, you can apply for a Pryme Business Account from any country. Its Compliance agent can prepare reminders for annual returns; nothing is filed or paid without your approval above the ceiling you set.

Questions people ask

Can I register my business name with CAC myself?

Yes. The CAC portal allows owners to file directly. The May 2025 fee schedule sets ₦1,000 for the name and ₦20,000 for registration.

Do I need a lawyer to register a company in Nigeria?

No. CAMA 2020 does not require one. A lawyer or accredited agent helps with complex structures, but a simple private company can be filed by its founder.

How do I know if a CAC agent is genuine?

Check CAC's accredited agents list, insist on the CAC payment receipt and confirm the registration on the free public search.

Why was my self-registration queried?

Common reasons are names close to existing ones, unclear ID uploads, mismatched details and vague business descriptions. Correct and resubmit through the portal.
