Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Recipient's Nigerian account frozen after your transfer

What a Post No Debit restriction on your recipient's Nigerian account means for money you sent from the US, who can lift it and what each of you should do.

The short answer

If your recipient's Nigerian bank has placed a Post No Debit (PND) restriction on the account, money you sent from the US can usually still arrive but cannot be withdrawn or spent until the bank lifts it. Only the account holder can get it lifted, by finding the reason with the bank and supplying what it asks for; the US provider has normally done its job once the funds are credited.

What "frozen" usually means in Nigeria

Nigerian banks restrict accounts in a few standard ways. The two that matter most to senders are Post No Debit (PND), where money can come in but nothing can go out, and Post No Debit or Credit, where the account can neither receive nor pay. The difference decides where your money is now.

RestrictionCan your transfer land? What the recipient sees
Post No Debit (PND)Usually yesBalance shows the money but transfers, card and ATM use fail
Post No Debit or CreditUsually no; the credit may be rejectedNothing arrives; the transfer may be returned to the provider
Court or agency freezeDepends on the orderAccount blocked, bank cites a legal instruction

Why accounts get restricted

  • Missing BVN or NIN. TheCable reported the CBN's December 2023 directive: from 1 March 2024, funded accounts and wallets without a BVN or NIN were to be placed on "Post No Debit or Credit". Old accounts of relatives who rarely bank are the usual casualties.
  • Know-your-customer updates. Expired ID, missing address proof or an incomplete account-opening file can lead a bank to restrict until the documents are supplied.
  • Dormancy. An account left unused may need reactivation before it can be debited. GTBank, for example, says an account with no customer-initiated transaction for six months is inactive and after one year is dormant; reactivating a dormant individual account needs a reactivation form, a utility bill from the last three months and valid ID at a branch.
  • Fraud or dispute flags. If funds linked to a complaint passed through the account, the bank may restrict it while it investigates.
  • Orders from courts or agencies. Anti-corruption and law enforcement bodies can direct banks to freeze accounts. ICIR reported in December 2024 that the Federal High Court in Abuja limited the ICPC's own freezing power to 72 working hours unless a court extends it.

Access Bank's account management request form shows how routine the process is: it lists "PND Lift/Account Unblock" as a request type, needing a stated reason and valid ID, with diaspora customers able to use a passport and visa or notarised permit.

What the recipient should do

  1. Call or visit the bank and ask exactly why the account is restricted and what will lift it. Ask for the answer in writing or by email.
  2. If the reason is BVN or NIN, link or update it. The bank's NIN/BVN portal or branch will do this; the guide to lifting a PND walks through a typical case.
  3. Supply the ID and documents named, and fill the bank's unblock request.
  4. If a court order or agency is involved, the bank cannot lift it alone. The account holder needs a lawyer to deal with the issuing body.
  5. Once lifted, check the balance shows your transfer before you send anything else.

Restrictions are applied by the receiving bank to its own customer, so neither you nor the US provider can see the reason. Ask your relative to share the bank's written explanation with you; it tells you whether to wait, redirect future transfers or involve a lawyer.

What you, the sender, should do

Check the transfer status first. If the provider shows it as delivered or deposited, the US remittance rule treats the money as received: the error-resolution rights under 12 CFR 1005.33 cover things like wrong amounts or funds not available by the disclosed date, not a restriction the receiving bank later applies to its own customer. If the provider shows the transfer as returned or failed because the account could not be credited, ask for a refund or for the money to be redirected to another account in the recipient's name.

If the funds were credited but you suspect the account was used by someone else, keep your receipt and see sent money to the wrong account and your CFPB rights.

Where Pryme fits

Family at home can open a Pryme Personal Account, with naira deposits held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit; accounts need a BVN or NIN like any other. You can send from a multicurrency account, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

What does PND mean on a Nigerian bank account?

Post No Debit: money can be paid in but nothing can be paid out until the bank lifts the restriction.

My brother's account is on PND, will my transfer still go?

Usually it will credit, but he cannot withdraw or transfer it until the bank lifts the PND. If the account is on Post No Debit or Credit, the transfer may bounce back.

Can I ask the bank to unfreeze the account from the US?

No. Only the account holder, or someone with legal authority, can ask the bank. You can help by sending scanned documents the bank requests.

Will Remitly or Western Union refund me if the account is frozen?

If the transfer was returned undelivered, ask for a refund. If it was credited, the provider has usually completed the transfer.
