Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Receiving Nigerian gratuity or terminal benefits in the UK

Left a Nigerian job and moved to the UK? Gratuity, RSA pension and final pay are paid differently. How each reaches you and how to move it on.

The short answer

A Nigerian gratuity or terminal benefit is paid by your former employer under your contract or staff handbook, usually in naira into a Nigerian account; your Retirement Savings Account is separate and is handled by your Pension Fund Administrator under PenCom rules. To get either to the UK, have it paid into a naira account in your name, then move it through a bank or regulated provider, keeping the employer's letter and statements as evidence.

Three different payments, three different payers

PaymentWho paysWhat decides it
Final salary and leave payFormer employerYour contract and the date you left
Gratuity or terminal benefitFormer employerYour contract, staff handbook or collective agreement
Retirement Savings Account (RSA)Your Pension Fund Administrator (PFA)PenCom rules and your PFA's process

People often mix the gratuity up with the pension. The gratuity is a payment your employer promised; the RSA holds contributions you and your employer made, managed by a PFA. Each has its own form, timeline and paperwork.

Gratuity: what to ask your former employer

Whether you are owed a gratuity, and how it is calculated, depends on your terms of employment rather than one national formula, so start with the documents.

  • Find your offer letter, contract and staff handbook, and the clause on end-of-service or terminal benefits.
  • Write to HR asking for a computation: the amount, the formula, deductions, and the payment date.
  • Ask for a letter confirming your exit date and the benefits paid; you will want it as source-of-funds evidence in the UK.
  • Confirm tax deducted. Nigerian employers deduct tax where it applies; ask for the deduction to be shown on the computation.
  • Give a naira account in your own name for payment. Nigerian employers settle in naira, and TheCable's summary of the CBN's 2026 FX Manual notes that Nigerian entities generally price and settle in naira.

If the employer delays, keep the correspondence. A formal letter of demand is the usual next step, and a lawyer in Nigeria can advise on the claim; this guide is information, not legal advice.

Your RSA is a separate process

Your PFA, not PenCom, holds your RSA records. ThisDay reported in January 2024 that PenCom requires data recapture for RSAs opened on or before 1 July 2019 before you can transfer the account or take benefits. Whether and when you can withdraw depends on PenCom rules on age and employment status, which your PFA will apply; ask it in writing what you can access as someone now living abroad. Our guide to updating your PFA records from the UK covers the paperwork, and the Nigeria library explains how pension contributions work.

Moving the money to the UK

Once a lump sum lands in naira, you choose when and how to convert it. The main routes:

  1. Keep part in naira for costs at home, such as family support or building, and avoid converting twice.
  2. Convert through your Nigerian bank and send to the UK. Under the 2026 FX Manual, outward transfers from self-funded domiciliary accounts no longer need Form A, per Pavestones' summary; ask your bank how a naira lump sum can be converted and remitted.
  3. Use a regulated provider that converts naira and pays a UK account, comparing the rate against the official rate and the fee before you approve.

Our guide to moving naira savings out of Nigeria legally compares those routes in detail.

Worked example

Example only. Chidi leaves a Lagos firm after eight years and is told his gratuity is ₦6,000,000 after tax. He asks for the computation and an exit letter, has it paid into his own naira account, keeps ₦1,500,000 there for his parents' needs, and converts ₦4,500,000. At about ₦1,782 to the pound (late October 2026 indicative rate) that is roughly £2,525 before any fee or margin. His UK bank asks about the credit; he sends the exit letter, the computation and the Nigerian statement showing the employer's payment.

Before you hand in your notice

Much of the friction disappears if you sort the paperwork before you leave Nigeria or the job.

  • Ask HR for the gratuity computation and expected payment date while you are still on the payroll.
  • Keep the naira account the employer will pay into active and in your sole name, with your current email and phone on it.
  • Update your contact details with your PFA and complete any data recapture before you travel.
  • Leave a written authority with a trusted relative only if the employer or PFA needs someone to attend in person, and check the format they accept.
  • Save digital copies of your contract, payslips and exit letter; your UK bank may ask for them months later.

UK tax

GOV.UK says UK residents normally pay UK tax on foreign income, and lists overseas pensions among the examples; whether a particular gratuity or lump sum is taxable in the UK depends on when you became resident, what the payment is for and the UK-Nigeria tax treaty. Keep the employer's computation and Nigerian tax records, and check with HMRC or a tax adviser before filing. This is information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account can receive the naira and hold GBP side by side, so you decide when to Swap; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit.

Questions people ask

Can my Nigerian gratuity be paid into a UK bank account?

Employers usually pay in naira into a Nigerian account. Have it paid into a naira account in your name, then move it to the UK through a bank or regulated provider.

Is gratuity the same as my pension in Nigeria?

No. Gratuity is a payment your employer promised under your terms of employment; your RSA pension is held by your PFA under PenCom rules.

What documents will my UK bank want for a gratuity payment?

An employer's letter confirming the exit and benefit, the computation, and a Nigerian statement showing the employer's payment.

Do I pay UK tax on a Nigerian gratuity?

It depends on your residence status, the payment and the treaty. GOV.UK says UK residents are normally taxed on foreign income; check with HMRC or an adviser.
