Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Free receipt template for Nigerian businesses

A complete sales receipt template for Nigerian shops and service businesses, with a VAT version, a filled example and the records rules behind it.

The short answer

A Nigerian business receipt should show who was paid, who paid, how much, for what, when, how it was paid and a unique receipt number. If you are registered for VAT and the customer needs to claim input VAT, issue a VAT invoice with the section 153 particulars as well. Keep copies for at least six years, as the Tax Administration Act 2025 requires for business records.

Receipt template (copy and fill in)

Replace text in [square brackets]. A receipt confirms money has been received; an invoice asks for it. Many small shops issue one document that does both, which is fine as long as the payment details are clear.

Shorter version for market stalls and kiosks

If you sell many small items, a booklet receipt with these seven lines covers the essentials:

  1. Receipt number (pre-printed).
  2. Business name and phone number.
  3. Date.
  4. Customer name.
  5. What was bought.
  6. Amount in figures and words.
  7. Paid by cash or transfer, and the transfer reference.

Filled example (text version)

Receipt No. RCT-004512. Mama Tobi Provisions, Shop 14, Wuse Market, Abuja. BN 3456789. Tax ID 0000000000000. Date: 17 October 2026, 14:20. Received from Mrs Halima Bello the sum of ₦95,000.00 (ninety-five thousand naira only) for 1 bag of rice (50kg) and 2 kegs of vegetable oil (5L), paid by bank transfer, session ID [reference]. Balance: nil. Issued by: [name and signature]. All names and numbers here are illustrative.

Receipts for deposits and part-payments

When a customer pays part of a price upfront, the receipt should say so in plain words: "Deposit of ₦40,000 received towards order no. 112, total price ₦100,000, balance ₦60,000 due on collection." Issue a second receipt for the balance that references the first. This avoids the common argument over whether a deposit was a payment for goods or a refundable booking fee. Our guide to taking deposits and part-payments covers refund terms.

Receipts for refunds

If you refund a customer, record it as a negative receipt or a refund note: original receipt number, amount refunded, method and date. Without it your cash book will not balance against your bank statement.

VAT receipts and invoices

If you are a VAT-registered taxable person, the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (section 153) requires a VAT invoice for taxable supplies showing eight particulars: your Tax ID, invoice number, name and address, CAC number, date of supply, buyer's name, gross amount, and the VAT rate and amount. VAT is 7.5%. Use the invoice template for that document, then mark it paid or issue a receipt that references it.

LineWithout VAT (₦)With VAT at 7.5% (₦)
Goods or service100,000.00100,000.00
VAT0.007,500.00
Total received100,000.00107,500.00

The figures are an example. Show VAT on its own line; a buyer cannot claim input VAT from a figure they cannot see.

Rules that shape a good receipt

  • Keep copies for six years. Section 31(5) of the Tax Administration Act 2025 says books and records must be kept for not less than six years after the relevant year of assessment.
  • Use the new Tax ID. From 1 January 2026 a 13-digit Tax ID replaces older TINs.
  • Watch for the Electronic Fiscal System. Section 23 of the Tax Administration Act lets the NRS deploy an EFS that taxable suppliers must then use to record and report supplies. Follow the NRS's announced transition for your size of business.
  • Match receipts to money actually received. Do not issue a receipt for a transfer until it shows in your account; see confirming a transfer before releasing goods.
  • Cancel, do not destroy. If you spoil a booklet receipt, write "cancelled" across it and keep it so the sequence stays complete.

Five checks before you hand over a receipt

  1. The money is in your account or till, not just on the customer's screen.
  2. The receipt number is the next in sequence.
  3. Figures and words agree.
  4. VAT, if charged, is on its own line at 7.5%.
  5. Your copy or carbon is legible and filed by date, so you can match it to your bank statement at the end of the day. See a simple bookkeeping system.

Where Pryme fits

Any Pryme customer can generate a regular or a verifiable receipt for a transaction with VerifyDoc.ai, and the recipient can verify that a verifiable one is genuine and unaltered. For businesses, that pairs with bank-transfer checkout. Our guide on what a business receipt should include covers the reasoning behind each field.

Questions people ask

Is a handwritten receipt valid in Nigeria?

A handwritten receipt from a numbered booklet is a valid business record if it shows the key details. VAT-registered businesses still need proper VAT invoices for taxable supplies, and the NRS may require its Electronic Fiscal System once deployed for your business.

What is the difference between a receipt and an invoice?

An invoice requests payment; a receipt confirms payment was received. VAT rules attach to the invoice, so a receipt for a VAT sale should reference the invoice number.

Should a receipt show the amount in words?

It is not a legal requirement, but writing the amount in words makes it harder to alter the figure and is common practice in Nigeria.

How long should I keep receipts?

At least six years after the relevant year of assessment, under section 31(5) of the Tax Administration Act 2025.
