Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Tenancy agreement checklist for Nigeria: clauses to check

A clause-by-clause tenancy agreement checklist for Nigerian tenants and landlords, with the Lagos statutory notice periods and rent advance limits.

The short answer

Before signing a tenancy agreement in Nigeria, check that it names the parties and property, states the rent, term, payment dates and what each fee is for, sets out repairs, renewal, notice and caution-deposit terms, and is signed and witnessed. In Lagos, the Tenancy Law limits rent in advance and supplies default notice periods where the agreement is silent.

The checklist (tick each item before you sign)

#ClauseWhat to check
1PartiesFull legal names, addresses and phone numbers of landlord and every tenant; the agent's name and role if one is involved
2PropertyExact address, flat number, and what is included (parking space, boys' quarters, fittings)
3UseResidential or commercial; who may live there
4TermStart date, end date, and whether it is a yearly, monthly or fixed-term tenancy
5RentAmount, how often, due date, and how it is paid (to which account)
6Rent in advanceHow many months or years are paid upfront; in Lagos check the legal cap
7Other chargesService charge, caution deposit, agency and legal fees, each with its amount and whether refundable
8Rent reviewWhen and how rent can be increased on renewal
9ReceiptsLandlord's duty to give a receipt for each payment
10RepairsWhich repairs fall to the landlord (structure, roof, plumbing, wiring) and which to the tenant
11UtilitiesWho pays electricity, water, waste and estate levies; whose name the meter is in
12AlterationsWhether the tenant may paint, fit or alter, and whether to restore at the end
13SublettingWhether subletting or assignment is allowed, and only with written consent
14AccessNotice the landlord gives before entering
15Quiet enjoymentTenant's right to occupy without interference
16RenewalHow to renew and by what date the tenant must say so
17Notice to quitNotice either side must give; if silent, the statutory period applies
18Caution deposit refundWhen it is returned and what deductions are allowed
19DefaultWhat happens if rent is late; no self-help eviction terms
20DisputesMediation first, then the courts; any state tenancy tribunal or citizens' mediation option
21InventorySigned list of fittings and their condition at move-in, with photos
22SignaturesBoth parties sign and date; each signature witnessed
23CopiesEach party keeps a signed copy
24StampingAsk whether the agreement should be stamped and who pays

Lagos statutory rules to check against

The Tenancy Law of Lagos State 2011 is the statute most Nigerian renters meet. As summarised by Discover Lagos:

Tenancy type (no written term on notice)Default notice
Weekly7 days
Monthly1 month
Quarterly or half-yearly3 months
Yearly6 months
Fixed termAs set in the agreement
  • Rent in advance is capped at one year for a new tenant and six months for a sitting tenant; collecting more is an offence (fine of ₦100,000 or up to three months' imprisonment).
  • Landlords must give a receipt for every payment.
  • Landlords must keep the premises habitable and do major repairs; tenants must pay on time, avoid damage and not sublet without consent.
  • The law does not apply to Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Apapa and Ikeja GRA.

Read the Lagos Tenancy Law explainer for more, and renting in Abuja if you are in the FCT.

Documents to ask for before you pay

  • Evidence that the person letting the property owns it or is authorised to let it, such as a letter of authority from the owner.
  • The landlord's or agent's ID and contact details.
  • For a flat in an estate, the estate's rules and the current service charge breakdown.
  • The last electricity bill or meter number, so you know the account is in order.
  • A draft of the agreement at least a day before you are asked to sign.

Red flags

  • No landlord name, only an agent's, and no written authority from the landlord.
  • Fees with no description or that are described as non-refundable caution deposit.
  • A clause allowing the landlord to lock you out or remove belongings without a court order.
  • Rent payable into a personal account of someone not named in the agreement.
  • Blank spaces left to be filled in later. Strike them through before signing.

Moving-out checklist

  1. Give notice in writing, dated, and keep proof of delivery.
  2. Agree a joint inspection date and compare against the move-in inventory and photos.
  3. Take final meter readings and settle utility bills, keeping receipts.
  4. Return all keys against a signed acknowledgement.
  5. Ask in writing for the caution deposit refund, with your account details, by the date the agreement sets.

Stamping and tax points

Stamp duties are covered in Chapter 5 of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 (sections 124 to 143). Whether and how a particular tenancy agreement should be stamped, and at what cost, depends on the instrument; check with the NRS or your state revenue service, or ask the lawyer preparing the agreement. For tenants who are employees, a signed agreement also supports a claim for rent relief of 20% of annual rent, up to ₦500,000, under section 30 of the Act; see our rent receipt template for the receipts that go with it.

Where Pryme fits

Paying rent from an account you control, by transfer, gives both sides a record that matches the agreement. Pryme customers can also generate a verifiable receipt or statement with VerifyDoc.ai for a rent payment, which a landlord or employer can verify is genuine and unaltered.

Questions people ask

Is a verbal tenancy valid in Nigeria?

A tenancy can exist without a written agreement, but disputes are much harder to settle. Where nothing is written, statutory notice periods such as those in the Lagos Tenancy Law apply.

How much rent can a Lagos landlord collect in advance?

Under the Lagos Tenancy Law as summarised, no more than one year from a new tenant and no more than six months from a sitting tenant, outside the excluded areas.

Should a tenancy agreement be witnessed?

It is good practice for each signature to be witnessed by someone who is not a party, with their name, address and signature.

Who pays for a lawyer to prepare the tenancy agreement?

It depends on what the parties agree. Make sure any legal fee is written as its own line with its amount, not folded into rent.
