Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Proforma invoice for a Nigerian buyer's Form M

What an Irish exporter's proforma invoice must show for a Nigerian Form M: 90-day validity, HS codes, Incoterm, RC number and TIN.

The short answer

A proforma invoice for a Nigerian buyer's Form M should be valid for no more than 90 days from issue, according to Sterling Bank's Form M FAQ, and should show both parties' full legal details including the buyer's RC number and TIN, a full description and HS code for every item, prices and currency, the Incoterm, origin, ports and payment terms. Keep the later commercial invoice consistent with it.

Your Nigerian buyer's Form M starts with your proforma invoice. The buyer's bank reads it, takes the values and descriptions from it, and uses it to validate the import. A proforma that is vague, out of date or inconsistent with the later commercial invoice causes delays and queries, and can hold up your payment. This guide lists what to include and why each item matters.

The rules the bank applies

Sterling Bank's Form M FAQ lists the proforma invoice (PFI) as a primary document for Form M and says it has a "maximum validity of 90 days from the date of issuance". SON's SONCAP FAQ also refers to a three-month validity for the PFI. Each item is classified by HS code, which the FAQ describes as the World Customs Organization system used to assess duty. Bureau Veritas's SONCAP data sheet (October 2024) asks for HS codes of at least four digits for a Product Certificate and ten digits for each shipment certificate, and for the importer's RC number and TIN.

What to put on the proforma

FieldWhy it matters
Your company's full legal name, address, VAT and EORI numbersMust match the beneficiary on the Form M and any letter of credit
Buyer's full legal name and address, RC number and TINThe importer files under its TIN; SONCAP needs RC and TIN
Proforma number and date of issueThe 90-day validity runs from this date
Validity statementFor example 'valid for 60 days'; inside the 90-day maximum
Detailed description of each itemMake, model, material and use; vague descriptions cause queries
HS code for each lineDuty and permits depend on it; ideally the full Nigerian code
Quantity, unit, unit price, line totalValues carry into the Form M and later the customs valuation
CurrencyEUR or USD; must match the Form M
Incoterm with named place and versionFor example 'FCA Dublin, Incoterms 2020'; see the freight and insurance split
Freight and insurance, shown separately where you include themNigerian Customs builds the value up to CIF
Country of origin and country of supplySterling's FAQ treats country of origin as a field that can force a new Form M if wrong
Port of loading and port of dischargeFor example Dublin and Apapa or Tin Can Island
Payment termsAdvance, LC, bill for collection; must match the Form M
Your bank detailsName of bank, IBAN, SWIFT/BIC; state that details are never changed by email
Gross and net weight, number of packagesHelps the buyer plan freight and clearance
Signature and company stampMany Nigerian banks expect a signed document

Common mistakes

  • Using a brand name or 'assorted goods' instead of a description of what each item is.
  • Leaving off HS codes, or using a code that does not match the goods.
  • Issuing the proforma in euros and the final invoice in dollars, or changing prices between the two.
  • Letting it expire while the buyer is still gathering permits.
  • Naming a different selling company on the proforma, the commercial invoice and the bank account.

Sterling's FAQ says some Form M fields can be amended after acceptance but others, such as the prefix, the bank code and the country of origin, need a new Form M. Getting the proforma right saves the buyer from starting again.

Proforma, commercial invoice and the customs value

The proforma is a quotation; the commercial invoice is the bill issued when you ship. They should match in parties, goods, quantities and prices. The Nigeria Customs Valuation Guide 2026 says the starting point for duty is the transaction value, with transport, handling and insurance to the Nigerian port added. Nigerian Customs can question a value it doubts, so a final invoice that differs from the proforma without explanation invites questions.

A worked example

Example only: a Dublin supplier quotes two lines. Line 1, 20 commercial dishwashers at €2,400 each, €48,000. Line 2, 40 boxes of spare parts at €150 each, €6,000. Subtotal €54,000 FCA Dublin, Incoterms 2020. The proforma is dated 1 October and states 'valid for 60 days', so it lapses on 30 November, well inside the 90-day maximum. Total: €48,000 + €6,000 = €54,000.

Steps

  1. Agree the Incoterm and payment method; see Incoterms for an Ireland-Nigeria deal.
  2. Confirm the buyer's legal name, RC number and TIN.
  3. Classify each item and agree the HS codes with the buyer's agent.
  4. Issue the signed proforma with a validity inside 90 days.
  5. Keep the commercial invoice consistent when you ship; see what Form M means for you.

The Ledger's import documents checklist shows the same papers from the Nigerian buyer's side.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account gives you euro and dollar account details to print on the proforma, Invoicing handles the invoices that follow, and when the buyer pays, a verifiable receipt lets its bank check the payment record has not been altered. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services are provided through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

How long is a proforma invoice valid for Form M?

Sterling Bank's Form M FAQ gives a maximum validity of 90 days from the date of issue.

Do I need HS codes on a proforma for a Nigerian buyer?

Yes. They decide duty and permits. Bureau Veritas asks for ten-digit codes for the SONCAP shipment certificate.

Can the commercial invoice differ from the proforma?

It should match in parties, goods, quantities and prices. Differences invite queries from the bank and Customs.

What buyer details should a proforma include?

Full legal name, address, RC number and TIN, which the Form M and SONCAP process use.
