Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How to get a prepaid meter in Aba: Aba Power MAP steps

How households in Aba Power's area get a prepaid meter, what the meters have cost as reported, documents to prepare, and what to do about estimated bills.

The short answer

Aba Power Limited, which serves 9 of Abia State's 17 local government areas, supplies prepaid meters through its own metering programme and NERC's Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme; you start by contacting an Aba Power office, which sends a team to assess your building. Prices have changed: in 2022 Aba Power said meters were recovered through energy credit over 36 months, while in January 2025 reported costs were about ₦120,000 for single-phase and ₦247,000 for three-phase, so confirm the current terms with Aba Power before you pay anything.

Who supplies your power in Aba

Aba and the surrounding LGAs are served by Aba Power Limited, not by Enugu Electricity Distribution (EEDC), which still covers Umuahia and other parts of Abia. Aba Power operates in nine of Abia State's 17 local government areas (Prime Business Africa, 26 January 2025; ThisDay, 10 December 2022). If you are unsure which company serves your street, look at your most recent bill or ask neighbours who already have meters.

How metering has worked so far

In December 2022 Aba Power said it was rolling out meters under NERC's Meter Asset Provider scheme with Holley Metering, starting with 5,000 single-phase and three-phase meters. Its managing director said customers were getting meters "at no cost to their pockets": the reported cost, ₦63,061.32 for single-phase and ₦117,910.69 for three-phase, was to be recovered through energy credit over 36 months (ThisDay, 10 December 2022).

In January 2025 the company said it planned to supply 120,000 meters that year, that NERC had approved 80,000 prepaid meters costing ₦10.8 billion, and that meter access had risen from 5% of customers in 2023 to 28% in 2024; the report put meter costs at about ₦120,000 single-phase and ₦247,000 three-phase, without saying how much customers would pay directly (Prime Business Africa, 26 January 2025).

Nationally, NERC deregulated MAP meter prices from 1 May 2024, so prices are set by competitive bidding rather than a fixed regulated figure, and distribution companies must keep a public online portal showing the technical and commercial terms (BusinessDay, 30 April 2024). See how to get a prepaid meter under the MAP scheme for the national picture.

Steps to apply

  1. Find your account or customer number on a recent bill.
  2. Contact or visit an Aba Power customer office and ask to be enrolled for a prepaid meter. In the 2022 rollout the company asked customers to visit or phone any of its offices.
  3. A technical team assesses the building and decides between single-phase (most flats and small shops) and three-phase (larger buildings or heavy loads).
  4. Receive the written terms: meter type, price, how it is paid and the installation timeline.
  5. Pay only through the official channel stated in those terms, and keep the receipt.
  6. Be present at installation. Check that the meter number on your paperwork matches the meter fitted and that your old account is closed or converted.
  7. Buy your first token and confirm it loads. Our guide to buying Aba Power tokens covers vending channels.

Documents to prepare

  • A recent electricity bill showing the account number and address.
  • A valid ID for the account holder.
  • If you are a tenant, the landlord's consent or the landlord applying for the building.
  • Your phone number and email for meter and token messages.

Tenants, landlords and shared buildings

Many Aba buildings have several flats or shops on one old account. Decide who applies before you start. If the landlord applies for the whole building, each unit can get its own meter and the shared-bill arguments end. If one tenant applies alone, get the landlord's written consent first, because the meter becomes a fixture of the building. Agree in writing who owns the meter if the cost is paid upfront, and what happens to any unrecovered balance if the tenant leaves early. Where the cost is recovered through energy credit, ask Aba Power whether the deduction stays with the meter or with the person, since the next occupant will otherwise inherit it.

Still on estimated billing?

Until your meter arrives you will be billed on estimates. You can reduce the risk of overpaying:

  • Check that your bill shows the correct tariff band; see Aba Power tariff bands.
  • Keep a record of outages so you can dispute a bill that does not reflect the supply you received.
  • Complain to Aba Power in writing first and keep the reference. If it is not resolved, NERC's process allows an appeal to a NERC Customer Complaints Forum office.
  • Read estimated electricity bills: your rights for the wider rules.

Worked example: upfront or spread

Example: suppose a single-phase meter costs ₦120,000 and a customer can either pay upfront or have it recovered from energy purchases over 36 months. Spread evenly, that is ₦3,333 a month (₦120,000 ÷ 36 = ₦3,333.33). A household buying ₦20,000 of tokens a month would then receive about ₦16,667 worth of units each month for three years. Ask Aba Power how its deduction is calculated; the terms in your agreement are what count.

Where Pryme fits

Once you are metered, you can buy tokens from the electricity bills section of the Pryme app, alongside airtime, data and cable TV. A Personal Assistant can remind you when it is usually time to top up; nothing is paid until you approve it.

Questions people ask

How much is a prepaid meter in Aba?

Reported costs in January 2025 were about ₦120,000 single-phase and ₦247,000 three-phase. How much you pay upfront depends on Aba Power's current terms, so confirm in writing before paying.

Is Aba Power meter free?

In 2022 Aba Power said customers got meters at no upfront cost, with the cost recovered through energy credit over 36 months. Ask whether that still applies to your application.

Does EEDC cover Aba?

No. Aba and eight neighbouring LGAs are served by Aba Power Limited. EEDC's Abia district is Umuahia.

How do I stop estimated billing in Aba?

Apply for a prepaid meter through Aba Power, and meanwhile dispute bills in writing, keep outage records and escalate to a NERC forum office if unresolved.
