Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Prepaid meter in Calabar: PHED MAP application steps

How to apply for a PHED prepaid meter in Calabar on the MAP portal, what it costs as at October 2026, and the cap on estimated bills while you wait.

The short answer

In Calabar you apply for a prepaid meter through PHED's online MAP portal (mapportal.phed.com.ng): sign in with an OTP, apply, pay online for a meter from one of PHED's approved meter asset providers, and track installation. Since NERC deregulated MAP meter prices from 1 May 2024, there is no single official price; the portal shows the current price before you pay. Until you are metered, NERC's order on capping estimated bills limits what PHED may charge unmetered residential customers.

Many Calabar homes and shops on PHED's network are still billed on estimates. Getting a prepaid meter ends the argument about estimated bills and lets you control spending unit by unit. The main route for most customers is the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, which PHED runs through an online portal. This guide covers the steps, the cost position as at October 2026, and your rights while you are still unmetered.

How the MAP scheme works

Under MAP, a licensed meter asset provider supplies and installs the meter, and the customer pays for it. NERC's Order on Deregulation of Meter Prices under the MAP scheme (NERC/2024/040), effective 1 May 2024, ended the regulated price and moved to prices set by competitive bidding. The order requires each distribution company to keep a public online portal showing technical requirements and commercial terms, and a dedicated bank account for meter payments.

PHED's MAP portal lists its approved meter vendors as ARMESE, HOLLEY, KIGG, WELLSUN and MOJEC. You choose through the portal rather than through an individual who comes to your street.

Steps to apply from Calabar

  1. Have your PHED account number (from your postpaid bill) and the details of the property ready.
  2. Go to mapportal.phed.com.ng and sign in with the one-time password (OTP) sent to you.
  3. Start a new prepaid meter application and give the details the portal asks for, including whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase.
  4. Review the price shown and pay online through the portal.
  5. Track the application status on the portal until installation is scheduled.
  6. On installation, confirm the meter number on your receipt matches the meter fitted, and that your old account is closed or linked so estimated bills stop.

If your property has outstanding postpaid debt, expect PHED to raise it. If the debt was run up by a previous occupant, say so in writing and ask PHED to confirm how it will be treated before you pay anything.

What a meter costs as at October 2026

Because prices are deregulated, we could not find a published PHED MAP price on an official page, and we do not quote one. For context only: the last regulated prices before May 2024 (September 2023) were about ₦81,795 for single-phase and ₦143,836 for three-phase, per Mondaq's summary of the NERC order. The price that applies to you is the one the PHED portal shows at the moment you pay.

While you wait: the cap on estimated bills

NERC's Order on Capping of Estimated Bills (NERC/197/2020), effective 20 February 2020, limits what a DisCo may bill unmetered residential (R2) and single-phase commercial (C1) customers. According to Mondaq's summary, caps are based on projected or average consumption of similar customers, NERC reviews them quarterly, and where a meter is faulty and not replaced within two working days, the customer should be billed no more than the average of the last three months.

NERC fined eight DisCos a total of ₦628.03 million in April 2025 for overbilling unmetered customers in the third quarter of 2024 (TheCable, 10 April 2025). PHED was not among those named. If your estimated bill looks far higher than neighbours on the same feeder, ask PHED for the applicable cap in writing.

After installation: TID and tampering rules

  • PHED's TID page explains that meters needed a key change token for the TID rollover; meters not migrated cannot vend. Enter your meter number on that page to generate the token if your meter rejects tokens.
  • Load recharge tokens in the order you bought them.
  • Do not bypass or tamper with the meter. NERC's amended order (effective 22 January 2025) sets maximum administrative charges of ₦100,000 for a first offence on a single-phase residential meter and ₦150,000 for a repeat, with higher amounts for three-phase.

Common problems and how to handle them

  • Installation is slow: keep checking the status on the portal and raise it through the support option on the portal, quoting your application reference. A written trail helps if you later go to a NERC Forum Office.
  • Someone offers a faster meter for cash: decline. The order requires payment into a dedicated account, and a meter installed outside the process may never be properly linked to your account.
  • Estimated bills continue after installation: send PHED your meter number and installation date and ask for the postpaid account to be closed from that date.
  • Shared compound with one meter: each household that wants its own control of spending needs its own application, so agree with neighbours before anyone pays.

What to check first

  • Single-phase or three-phase supply at your property.
  • Your PHED account number and any outstanding balance.
  • The vendor and price shown on the portal before you pay.
  • That your meter number and installation date are recorded on the portal afterwards.

Where Pryme fits

Once your meter is installed, you can buy PHED tokens in the Pryme app (pay electricity). For the national picture, see getting a prepaid meter under MAP, and for unit prices on your feeder, PHED tariff bands in Calabar. Token buying in the city is covered in buying PHED tokens in Calabar.

Questions people ask

How much is prepaid meter in Calabar now?

There is no single official price since NERC deregulated MAP meter prices from 1 May 2024. PHED's MAP portal shows the current price before you pay.

How do I apply for PHED prepaid meter online?

Use mapportal.phed.com.ng: sign in with an OTP, apply, choose the meter type, pay online and track installation.

Can PHED charge me any estimated bill if I have no meter?

No. NERC's order on capping estimated bills (NERC/197/2020) limits bills for unmetered R2 and C1 customers. Ask PHED for the cap in writing if your bill seems high.

Who are PHED approved meter vendors?

PHED's MAP portal lists ARMESE, HOLLEY, KIGG, WELLSUN and MOJEC.
