Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

How many units does ₦5,000 buy on PHED?

₦5,000 buys about 23.87kWh on PHED Band A and about 72.51kWh on Band B at the rates in NERC's latest order. Here is the sum for every band.

The short answer

At the allowed tariffs in NERC's May 2026 order for PHED, ₦5,000 buys about 23.87 units (kWh) on Band A at ₦209.50, about 72.51 on Band B, 88.68 on Band C, 126.04 on Band D and 126.77 on Band E (Non-MD). Your receipt can show fewer units if any tax, debt or other deduction is taken first.

A "unit" on a prepaid meter is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). To work out what a fixed amount buys, divide the amount you pay by the price per kWh for your band. The hard part is knowing the right price, because PHED customers on the same street can be on different feeders and therefore different bands.

The sum, band by band

These figures use the allowed tariffs in NERC's May 2026 Supplementary Order for PHED (ORDER/NERC/2026/048), the latest PHED order we found when checking in October 2026. They are for Non-MD customers, which covers most homes and small shops. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

BandRate per kWh (as at Oct 2026)Units for ₦5,000Units for ₦10,000
A₦209.5023.8747.73
B₦68.9672.51145.01
C₦56.3888.68177.37
D₦39.67126.04252.08
E₦39.44126.77253.55

Worked example: ₦5,000 ÷ ₦209.50 = 23.87 kWh on Band A. The same ₦5,000 on Band B is ₦5,000 ÷ ₦68.96 = 72.51 kWh, roughly three times as much energy, which reflects the fewer guaranteed hours of supply in Band B (a minimum of 16 hours a day against 20 for Band A, under the order's appendix).

Why your receipt may show fewer units

The table assumes the whole ₦5,000 goes on energy. In practice the units on your receipt can be lower. The PHED order does not say whether its figures include tax, so do not assume they do. Look at your receipt for separate lines such as:

  • A tax line, if one is charged on the vend.
  • A debt or arrears deduction, if your meter account owes money from an earlier period.
  • A service or convenience charge added by the bank, app or agent you paid through, which may come out of the amount or be added on top.

To find your effective price, divide the amount that actually went to PHED by the units shown. If that figure is far from your band's rate, compare the band on the receipt with your feeder's band, and see our guide to PHED's tariff for each band.

How long 23.87 units lasts

Units disappear at the rate your appliances draw power. A 100-watt load running for 10 hours uses 1 kWh. Two quick examples, both labelled as estimates because ratings vary by model:

  • Example: a fridge averaging 1.5kWh a day uses about 15.9 days of a Band A ₦5,000 vend on its own (23.87 ÷ 1.5).
  • Example: a 1.5HP air conditioner drawing about 1.1kW for 6 hours a day uses about 6.6kWh a day, so 23.87 units lasts roughly 3.6 days.

Check your meter's running balance to see your real consumption; our guide on checking units left on a PHED meter shows how.

Lifeline and maximum-demand customers

Two groups need a different sum. The order's Lifeline class (R1) is for customers using no more than 50kWh a month and is priced at ₦4.00 per kWh, so a small amount goes a long way, but only within that monthly ceiling. Maximum-demand customers (MD1 and MD2), usually businesses with larger connections, pay slightly different rates in Bands B to E: ₦67.18 or ₦67.12 in Band B, ₦54.64 in Band C, and ₦55.43 in Bands D and E. Band A is ₦209.50 for every class.

Example for a shop on MD1 in Band C: ₦5,000 ÷ ₦54.64 = 91.51 kWh, a little more than the 88.68 kWh a Non-MD customer would get on the same band.

Spending more to get the same energy

A frequent surprise for people who move house within Port Harcourt is that the same ₦5,000 suddenly buys far fewer units. That usually means the new address is on a Band A feeder and the old one was on Band B or lower. It is not a fault: the price per unit is higher because the feeder is committed to more hours of supply. If the supply you actually get does not match Band A, that is a separate matter covered by PHED's downgrade and compensation rules.

A practical habit: note the units on each receipt in your phone for a month. If the units per ₦1,000 suddenly drop, the band or a deduction has changed, and you will spot it before it costs you much.

What to check first

  1. Your band: on the payment screen or last receipt.
  2. The current rate: NERC's latest PHED supplementary order.
  3. Your receipt: compare units against amount, and look for deductions.
  4. Your meter: load the token and confirm the balance rose by the units shown.

For how tokens are generated and loaded generally, see how prepaid electricity tokens work.

Where Pryme fits

You can buy electricity through bills in the Pryme app, and a Personal Assistant can remind you to top up before units run low; nothing is paid until you approve it.

Questions people ask

How many units is ₦5,000 on Band A PHED?

About 23.87 kWh at ₦209.50 per kWh, the Band A rate in NERC's May 2026 order for PHED, before any deductions shown on your receipt.

How many units is ₦5,000 on Band B in Port Harcourt?

About 72.51 kWh at ₦68.96 per kWh for Non-MD customers, using the same order.

Why did I get fewer units than the calculation?

Your receipt may show a tax line, a debt deduction or a channel charge. Divide the amount that reached PHED by the units to find your effective rate.

How many units does ₦10,000 buy on PHED?

About 47.73 kWh on Band A and 145.01 kWh on Band B, at the rates in the May 2026 order.
