Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Paying staff in Nigeria from a South African company

Employer of record, your own Nigerian company or contractors: what each route means for PAYE, the 18% pension minimum and the SA company's own tax risk.

The short answer

A South African company can pay Nigeria-based staff through an employer of record, through its own Nigerian subsidiary, or as contractors where the work is truly independent. Whichever Nigerian employer runs payroll must remit PAYE by the 10th of the following month and pay at least 18% of monthly pay into pensions (10% employer, 8% employee) within seven working days of salary.

Three ways to do it

A South African company with people working in Nigeria has three realistic structures. Each puts the Nigerian payroll obligations on a different legal employer, and each carries a different level of tax risk for the South African company.

RouteWho employs the staffMain trade-off
Employer of record (EOR)A Nigerian EOR provider, which hires them on your behalfFast and no entity to run, but a monthly fee per person and less control of the contract
Your own Nigerian entityYour Nigerian subsidiary, registered with CACFull control, but registration, payroll, filings and audits to run
ContractorsNobody: they invoice youSimplest on paper, but risky if the work looks like employment

Whoever employs them, these obligations follow

Where the employer is in Nigeria, the core payroll duties are the same:

  • PAYE: deducted from pay and remitted on or before the 10th of the month after salaries are paid, with an annual return of all emoluments by 31 January, according to PwC's Nigeria summary reviewed in May 2026.
  • Pension: PenCom's 2023 FAQ says the contributory scheme covers private organisations with three or more employees, at a minimum of 18% of monthly emoluments (10% employer, 8% employee), remitted no later than seven working days after salaries are paid.
  • National Housing Fund: PwC and DLA Piper both report that NHF deductions are no longer compulsory for private-sector employees; DLA Piper advises employers to stop unless the employee explicitly consents.
  • Currency: DLA Piper notes that pay in foreign currency is converted to naira at the CBN rate at payment to work out PAYE and other statutory deductions.

The detail of PAYE, including which state collects it, is in our companion guide on Nigerian PAYE for staff of an SA company.

Route 1: employer of record

An EOR is the legal employer in Nigeria. It issues the Nigerian employment contract, runs payroll, deducts and remits PAYE and pension, and invoices you for salary plus its fee. This is the usual choice for one to ten people, or while you test the market. Points to check in the EOR contract: who owns intellectual property created by the staff, how termination works under Nigerian law, what the fee covers, and how you will see proof that PAYE and pension were remitted each month. Our comparison of EOR versus your own Nigerian entity goes further.

Route 2: your own Nigerian company

A subsidiary gives you direct control and is usually cheaper per head once the team is large. It also means a Nigerian company with its own tax, pension and corporate filings. Registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission is explained in registering a private limited company in Nigeria. Once the subsidiary exists, the South African parent's charges to it for management or software fall under transfer pricing rules in both countries.

Route 3: contractors, carefully

Paying people as independent contractors avoids Nigerian payroll, but only where they really are independent. A June 2026 note by Adeola Oyinlade & Co says Nigerian courts look at control, integration into the business, economic reality, mutuality of obligation and exclusivity, with no single test, and that a reclassified worker can claim employment rights such as notice and leave. A full-time person working only for you, on your hours, with your equipment and your email address, is hard to describe as a contractor.

The South African company's own tax risk

Having people in Nigeria can, in some cases, create a taxable presence for the South African company itself. Under the South Africa–Nigeria tax treaty, furnishing services through employees in Nigeria for more than 183 days in a twelve-month period can create a permanent establishment. PwC's summary of Nigeria's rules says a foreign company is not treated as having one solely because it employs people resident in Nigeria, where those people do not primarily serve customers in Nigeria. A Lagos developer building your South African product sits differently from a Lagos salesperson selling to Nigerian clients. See when an SA company becomes taxable in Nigeria.

What to check first

  1. What will the staff do, and for which customers?
  2. How many people, and for how long?
  3. Is the work independent enough to be a contract, or is it employment?
  4. Which route gives you monthly proof that PAYE and pension were paid?
  5. Tax and employment points here are information, not advice; take advice in both countries before you hire.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local details for each, so a Nigerian subsidiary or a company paying an EOR can fund naira salaries without converting more than it needs. Payroll and bulk payouts pay many staff at once, and the Finance agent prepares the run for a person to approve; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve any conversion.

Questions people ask

Can a South African company employ people in Nigeria without a Nigerian company?

Yes, through an employer of record that acts as the legal employer in Nigeria and runs payroll for you. Paying them directly as employees from South Africa raises unresolved PAYE registration questions.

What pension do Nigerian employees get?

PenCom says organisations with three or more employees contribute at least 18% of monthly emoluments, 10% from the employer and 8% from the employee, remitted within seven working days of salary payment.

Is NHF still compulsory for Nigerian staff?

PwC and DLA Piper report that NHF is no longer compulsory for private-sector employees; deduct it only with the employee's explicit consent.

Can I just pay my Lagos staff as contractors?

Only if the relationship really is independent. Nigerian courts look at control, integration and exclusivity, and a reclassified worker can claim employment rights.
