Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

When does an SA company become taxable in Nigeria?

The SA-Nigeria treaty PE tests: a fixed place, projects over six months, services over 183 days, contract-signing agents. What triggers Nigerian tax.

The short answer

Under the South Africa–Nigeria tax treaty, a South African company pays Nigerian tax on business profits only if it has a permanent establishment in Nigeria: a fixed place of business, a construction project over six months, services by its personnel in Nigeria for more than 183 days in a twelve-month period, or an agent who habitually concludes contracts for it. Nigeria then taxes only the profits attributable to that PE.

Two sets of rules apply

A South African company becomes taxable in Nigeria on its business profits when it has a permanent establishment (PE) there. Two layers decide that. Nigerian domestic law sets out when a foreign company has a taxable presence. The South Africa–Nigeria double taxation agreement, signed in Cape Town on 29 April 2000 and in force from 5 July 2008, then limits what Nigeria may tax: under Article 7, business profits of a South African enterprise are taxable only in South Africa unless it carries on business in Nigeria through a PE, and then only the profits attributable to that PE.

The treaty tests, Article 5

TestWhat the treaty says
Fixed place of businessA fixed place through which the business is wholly or partly carried on: a place of management, branch, office, factory, workshop, mine or similar
Construction or installationA building site, construction, assembly or installation project, or supervision of one, lasting more than six months
ServicesFurnishing services, including consultancy, through employees or other personnel, where the activity continues for more than 183 days in aggregate in any twelve-month period starting or ending in the fiscal year
Dependent agentA person who habitually has and uses authority to conclude contracts for the company, or habitually secures orders almost wholly for it or its group
Not a PEFacilities used only for storage, display or delivery; purchasing or gathering information; other preparatory or auxiliary activity; independent agents acting in the ordinary course; a subsidiary in itself

The services test is the one that catches most South African service firms. It counts days of activity by your personnel in Nigeria across the twelve-month window, so several short trips by different consultants on connected work can add up.

Nigeria's domestic tests

PwC's Nigeria summary (reviewed May 2026) lists the situations in which a non-resident company has a taxable presence under the Nigeria Tax Act: a place in Nigeria through which the business is wholly or partly carried on; trading through a person in Nigeria authorised to conduct business on its behalf; furnishing services in Nigeria through employees, agents, subcontractors or other persons; and supplying digital products to the Nigerian market, the significant economic presence (SEP) rule. The same summary says a company is not treated as having a PE solely because it employs people resident in Nigeria, where they do not primarily serve customers in Nigeria.

A June 2026 note by Adeola Oyinlade & Co makes the same point from the employment side: the new Act widens PE to a service presence created through employees, agents and subcontractors.

Activities that raise the risk

  • Consultants on site at a Nigerian client for long stretches, adding up past 183 days in twelve months.
  • A Lagos employee who negotiates and signs contracts with Nigerian customers on your behalf.
  • A rented office or desk used for your business, not just as a meeting space.
  • An installation or construction project in Nigeria running past six months.
  • Digital sales to Nigerian customers on a scale that meets the SEP rules; see Nigerian VAT on digital sales for the VAT side.

Activities that usually do not, on their own

  • Staff in Nigeria doing back-office, engineering or support work for the South African business and its non-Nigerian customers.
  • Short visits to meet clients, where days stay well under the threshold.
  • Buying goods in Nigeria, or gathering market information.
  • Selling through a truly independent Nigerian distributor or agent.

A worked example: counting days

Example only. A Johannesburg engineering consultancy sends staff to one Nigerian client project:

PersonDays in Nigeria on the project (same 12 months)
Lead engineer70
Two analysts (40 days each)80
Project manager45
Total days of activity195

Whether the 183-day services test is met depends on how activity days are counted, and days when several people are present together may be counted once rather than per person. On a per-person basis this project is over 183; on a calendar-day basis it may be under. That uncertainty is exactly why firms track trips by project from the start and take advice before the count gets close.

If you do have a PE

Nigeria may tax the profits attributable to the PE, measured as if it were a separate enterprise dealing at arm's length (Article 7). Expect to register with the Nigeria Revenue Service, file a Nigerian return within six months of the financial year end (PwC corporate tax administration summary), and claim credit in South Africa for the Nigerian tax; see the SA–Nigeria tax agreement explained and Nigerian withholding tax on payments to SA companies.

What to check first

  • Who in Nigeria acts for you, and can they conclude contracts?
  • How many days your people spend in Nigeria per project per twelve months.
  • Whether your Nigerian staff serve Nigerian customers or the wider business.
  • Information only; treaty application turns on facts, so take advice in both countries.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account keeps naira receipts from Nigerian clients separate from dollars, pounds and euros, which makes it easier to show what income relates to Nigeria. The Finance agent can tag payments by project so you have the trail when you need it.

Questions people ask

Does having one employee in Lagos make my SA company taxable in Nigeria?

Not by itself. PwC's summary says employing Nigerian residents who do not primarily serve Nigerian customers is not on its own a PE. An employee who signs contracts with Nigerian customers is different.

What is the 183-day rule in the SA–Nigeria treaty?

Services furnished through employees or other personnel in Nigeria create a PE where the activity continues for more than 183 days in aggregate in any twelve-month period.

How long can a construction project in Nigeria run before it is a PE?

Under Article 5 of the treaty, a building site or construction, assembly or installation project becomes a PE if it lasts more than six months.

If I have a PE in Nigeria, is all my profit taxed there?

No. Article 7 limits Nigeria to the profits attributable to the PE, measured at arm's length.
