Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Paying Nigerian staff in USD: is it allowed?

What Nigerian law says about paying wages in naira, how the CBN treats dollar accounts, and the practical issues with paying employees in dollars.

The short answer

There is no simple yes. Nigeria's Labour Act says wages are to be paid in legal tender, which is the naira, and Nigerian payroll taxes and pension are calculated in naira, so most employers in Nigeria pay employees in naira. Some employers pay part of the package in dollars into domiciliary accounts; whether that fits your contracts depends on how your staff are employed, so take Nigerian legal advice before you do it.

Nigerian staff often ask to be paid in dollars, and with revenue in USD it can look easier for a US company to agree. The legal position is less tidy than either side expects. This guide sets out what the sources say and the practical consequences. It is information, not legal advice; this is a question for a Nigerian employment lawyer.

What the Labour Act says

Section 1 of the Labour Act (Cap L1, Laws of the Federation 2004) provides that wages are to be paid in legal tender, or, with the worker's prior written consent, by cheque or postal order. The naira is Nigeria's legal tender. Section 15 requires wages to be paid at the end of each agreed period, at least monthly.

Two cautions. First, the Act uses its own definition of "worker", which is narrower than everyday use, so whether a senior professional falls within it is itself a legal question. Second, the Act is old and was written for cash and cheques; it does not deal directly with electronic transfers in foreign currency. Read section 1 as a strong signal that a naira wage is the default, not as the last word on every package.

What the CBN rules cover

The Central Bank's foreign exchange rules govern how foreign currency moves through Nigerian banks. Under the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual effective 1 June 2026, as summarised by Pavestones Legal, holders of self-funded domiciliary accounts can remit from them without Form A, and direct transfers up to US$10,000 a day are possible without extensive trade documents. That is about access to dollars already in a domiciliary account. We did not find a CBN circular in force in October 2026 that specifically authorises or prohibits paying salaries in foreign currency, so check with your Nigerian bank and lawyer before relying on either view.

The practical issues

  • Tax is computed in naira. The PAYE bands under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 are set in naira (0% on the first ₦800,000 and so on, per PwC). A dollar salary has to be converted each month to work out PAYE, and the rate you use needs to be consistent and documented.
  • Pension is in naira. Contributions of 10% employer and 8% employee are remitted to PFAs in Nigeria in naira.
  • The employee carries the exchange rate. A dollar salary protects staff from a falling naira, which is why they ask, but it also means their tax changes month to month.
  • Cash access. Employees need a domiciliary account in their own name to receive dollars in Nigeria.

Contractors are a different question

A Nigerian contractor invoicing your US company for services is not being paid "wages" under the Labour Act. Many contractors invoice in dollars and are paid into dollar accounts. They handle their own Nigerian tax. The risk is calling an employee a contractor to get round payroll rules; see paying a Nigerian contractor from a US LLC.

Common approaches

ApproachHow it worksWatch for
Naira salaryContract in naira; you convert monthlyYou carry the FX risk
Naira salary indexed to USDContract states a USD figure converted to naira on a set date at a stated rate sourceTake-home and PAYE change monthly; agree the rate source
Naira salary plus dollar componentBase in naira; bonus or allowance in USD to a domiciliary accountGet advice on the dollar part; it is still taxable pay
Contractor in USDInvoices in dollarsMust really be a contract for services

If you use an employer of record, ask whether it supports dollar-indexed or part-dollar pay in Nigeria and on what legal basis; see employer of record in Nigeria. For the routine of funding naira payroll from dollar revenue, see paying naira salaries from USD revenue.

Why staff ask, and how to respond

Requests for dollar pay usually come from a fair concern: a salary fixed in naira loses value when the naira falls. If you cannot pay in dollars, you can still address that concern with a scheduled salary review, a published indexation formula or a dollar-linked bonus, each set out in writing. Be clear about what you are offering and avoid side arrangements that do not appear on payroll.

What to check first

  1. Whether your staff are employees or contractors.
  2. What the employment contract states as the salary currency.
  3. Your Nigerian lawyer's view on any dollar component.
  4. How your payroll converts dollar amounts to naira for PAYE and pension, and which rate source it uses.
  5. That each employee has the right account to receive the payment.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds USD and NGN with local details for each, so you can keep revenue in dollars and pay naira salaries through payroll, converting with Swap when you choose. Rates and fees are shown before you approve; see multicurrency.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian employee be paid in dollars?

The Labour Act says wages are paid in legal tender, which is the naira, and tax and pension are computed in naira. Some employers pay a dollar component; take Nigerian legal advice first.

Has the CBN banned salaries in dollars?

We did not find a CBN circular in force in October 2026 specifically on salaries in foreign currency. The CBN's FX Manual governs domiciliary account use. Check with your bank and lawyer.

How is PAYE calculated on a dollar salary?

The salary is converted to naira and taxed under the naira bands. Use a consistent, documented rate source.

Can I pay a Nigerian contractor in USD?

Contractors are not paid wages under the Labour Act and often invoice in dollars, provided the relationship really is a contract for services.
