Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Paying a developer in USD from the US: what the contract says

Dollar-priced off-plan deals: the currency clauses to read, how naira payments are converted, what refunds come back in, and the legal points to raise.

The short answer

Many Nigerian off-plan contracts sold to buyers abroad price the property in dollars. Read four clauses closely: the currency of the price, the currency and account for payment, the exchange rate used if you pay in naira, and the currency of any refund. The CBN Act makes the naira legal tender and refusing it an offence, with a CBN power to set when other currencies may be used, so ask your lawyer how a dollar-only clause would be treated if the deal went to court.

For a buyer in the US, a dollar price looks simple: no exchange-rate risk, and you earn in dollars. For the developer, it moves the currency risk to you. The difficulty is what happens when things change: a payment made in naira, a delay that stretches over a devaluation, or a refund. This guide walks through the clauses that decide those questions. It is information, not legal advice.

Section 15 of the CBN Act 2007 makes the naira the currency of Nigeria, and section 20(1) makes CBN notes legal tender "for the payment of any amount". Section 20(5) makes refusing to accept the naira as a means of payment an offence, punishable by a ₦50,000 fine or six months' imprisonment, with a proviso that the CBN may set the circumstances and conditions under which other currencies may be used. What this means for a dollar-priced property contract between private parties is a question for your lawyer; the practical point is that a contract which refuses naira outright may be harder to enforce than one which states a dollar price and allows payment of the naira equivalent at a defined rate.

How you send the money matters too. Under the CBN's IMTO Guidelines, licensed money transfer operators pay out to recipients in naira only, and a CBN circular dated 24 March 2026, effective 1 May 2026, reinforced that remittance proceeds move only through designated settlement accounts, as Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie explain. A developer who wants dollars will usually ask for a bank wire to its domiciliary account.

Clauses to read

ClauseGood wording does thisWatch for
PriceStates the price in one currency, fixed"Subject to review" or price escalation without a cap
Payment currencySays whether dollars, naira or either are accepted, and into which named accountPayments to personal or third-party accounts
Exchange rateNames the rate used for naira payments (for example a stated published rate on the payment date) and who bears conversion costs"The developer's prevailing rate", which lets the developer pick
RefundRefund in the currency paid, within a set periodRefunds in naira at a historic rate, or "less administrative charges" with no cap
DefaultInterest or compensation in a stated currency if the developer is latePenalties only on the buyer
Governing law and disputesNigerian law, with mediation and a named court or arbitrationDisputes only in a forum you cannot reach

The refund trap

The most expensive clause is the one buyers read last. If you paid dollars and the refund is in naira at the rate on your payment date, a fall in the naira between payment and refund is your loss. If you paid naira against a dollar price and the refund is in naira, you get back the naira you paid, not its dollar value. Ask for refunds in the currency you paid, and keep proof of every payment and rate.

A worked example

Example only, rates invented for illustration. Ada in Dallas buys a $60,000 flat and pays 40%, $24,000, by wire. The project stalls and the contract allows a refund "in naira at the rate prevailing on the date of payment". Suppose the rate on her payment date was ₦1,500 to the dollar: the refund is ₦36,000,000. If the rate on the refund date is ₦1,800, that ₦36,000,000 converts back to $20,000, a $4,000 loss before fees. Had the clause said "in the currency paid", she would recover $24,000.

Paying in stages across currencies

Stage payments over two or three years multiply the currency questions. If some stages are paid in dollars and others in naira, the contract should say how each naira payment is credited against the dollar price, using the named rate on that payment's date, and the developer's receipt should show both figures. Keep a running ledger of what you have paid in each currency and the dollar credit given, and reconcile it with the developer's statement at each stage.

What to ask before signing

  1. Which currency and account, in writing, for each payment.
  2. The exact rate source for naira payments.
  3. Refunds in the currency paid, with a deadline.
  4. Compensation if handover is late; see delayed handover options.
  5. Whether money is held in a separate client account or escrow until milestones; see escrow for a Nigerian property.

Large payments abroad attract questions from US banks; keep the contract and invoice ready. See sending a property deposit to Nigeria.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account opened from the US holds dollars and naira with local details for each, so you can pay in the currency the contract specifies. If you convert, Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve, which gives you a dated record of the rate actually used.

Questions people ask

Can a Nigerian developer insist on dollars?

Developers often price in dollars. The CBN Act makes refusing naira an offence, with a CBN power to allow other currencies in set conditions, so ask your lawyer how a dollar-only clause would be treated.

What exchange rate applies if I pay a dollar price in naira?

Whatever the contract says. Insist on a named, published rate source and date rather than the developer's own rate.

Will I get my refund in dollars?

Only if the contract says so. Many contracts refund in naira, which can cost you if the naira falls. Negotiate refunds in the currency paid.

Can I pay a developer through a money transfer app?

Licensed transfer operators pay out in naira only under CBN rules, so a developer wanting dollars will usually ask for a bank wire.
