Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ireland

Paying a Nigerian hospital bill directly from Ireland

A relative is in hospital in Nigeria and you are in Ireland. How to pay the hospital itself, what invoice to ask for and how to avoid bill scams.

The short answer

Ask the hospital for an itemised invoice or deposit request on its letterhead, then pay into the hospital's own corporate account, not a doctor's, nurse's or relative's personal account. Many Nigerian hospitals ask for a deposit before admission; teaching hospitals publish these, and UBTH raised its ICU deposit to ₦1,000,000 in early 2026.

A call from home saying a parent has been admitted is one of the hardest moments of living abroad. The pressure to send money immediately is real, and so is the risk that the money goes somewhere other than the hospital. Paying the hospital directly, against a written bill, protects the patient, protects you and gives the family a clear record.

How Nigerian hospitals bill

Most Nigerian hospitals, public and private, ask for payment before or during treatment rather than billing afterwards. Common items are a registration or card fee, consultation, admission deposit, drugs from the hospital pharmacy, laboratory tests, scans, theatre fees and daily ward or consumables charges.

Deposits can be large. According to a February 2026 report in Blueprint on an internal memo at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), the ICU admission deposit rose to ₦1,000,000 from ₦500,000, with deposits of ₦150,000 for medical wards, ₦200,000 for private wards and the labour ward complex, and weekly consumables charges of ₦15,000 to ₦20,000. Other hospitals set their own amounts, so ask for the current figure in writing.

Get the invoice before you pay

Ask a family member at the bedside to collect, or ask the hospital to email, a document that shows:

  • the hospital's full name, address and letterhead or stamp
  • the patient's name and hospital number
  • each item and its cost, or the deposit amount and what it covers
  • the hospital's own bank account name and number for payment, or its payment portal
  • a contact in the accounts or billing office

If the patient is enrolled with an HMO or a state health insurance scheme, ask the hospital what the plan covers before you pay out of pocket. The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says its enrollees generally pay a 10% co-payment on drugs, and it takes complaints through its offices, HMOs or its call centre, listed on its site. Covered services should not be charged again in cash; if they are, the family can complain to the HMO and then to NHIA.

Paying from Ireland, step by step

  1. Confirm the account name on the invoice is the hospital's name. Check it again when your transfer shows the recipient name before you confirm.
  2. Call the hospital's billing office on a number from its own website or signboard, not the number in a text message, and confirm the amount and account.
  3. Send naira to the hospital account with the patient's name and hospital number as the narration.
  4. Send the transfer confirmation to the billing office and to the relative at the bedside, and ask for an official receipt.
  5. Keep every receipt. Hospital stays often run to several payments, and the totals are easier to reconcile at discharge.

Worked example (illustrative)

Suppose a parent is admitted to a private ward. The hospital asks for an example deposit of ₦200,000, then sends an interim bill three days later: drugs ₦86,500, laboratory tests ₦42,000, a scan ₦65,000 and ward consumables ₦15,000. The interim bill totals ₦208,500. If the deposit is applied against it, the balance due is ₦8,500, not ₦208,500. Families often pay the full interim bill twice because nobody asked how the deposit was applied, so ask for a running statement.

Drugs, tests and transfers outside the hospital

Sometimes the hospital pharmacy is out of a drug, or a scan has to be done at a private diagnostic centre, and the family is sent out to buy it. Treat each of these as its own small bill: ask for the prescription or request form, pay the pharmacy or centre directly, and keep the receipt with the hospital's. If the patient is moved to another hospital, ask the first hospital for a discharge summary and a final statement showing what was paid and what, if anything, is refundable from the deposit. A deposit that was not used up is money the family can ask for back, but only if someone asks before the file is closed.

Warning signs

  • Someone you do not know calls to say a relative is in hospital and asks for money to a personal account.
  • The "bill" is a photo of handwriting with no hospital name.
  • You are told the hospital's account is "down" and to pay a staff member.
  • You are pushed to pay within minutes and told not to call anyone.

Any of these is a reason to stop and check, using the steps in our scam checks for urgent money requests. For ways to fund a large bill in Nigeria, see borrowing for medical bills and emergencies.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme Personal Account opened from Ireland you can hold euro and naira, convert with Swap (the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve) and send naira to the hospital's account. A verifiable receipt from Pryme's partnership with VerifyDoc.ai lets the billing office check the payment record is genuine and unaltered (receipts). Pharmacies are one of the sectors in Spaces in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. To reduce the next emergency bill, consider HMO cover for parents in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I pay a Nigerian hospital directly from Ireland?

Yes, by sending naira to the hospital's own account or portal against a written invoice. Confirm the account by calling the hospital's billing office on a number you found yourself.

Why does a Nigerian hospital want a deposit before admission?

Many hospitals require deposits before admission or procedures. UBTH's ICU deposit was reported at ₦1,000,000 in February 2026; amounts differ by hospital and ward.

My parent has an HMO. Should the hospital still charge cash?

Not for services the plan covers, apart from co-payments such as the 10% NHIA says enrollees generally pay on drugs. Ask the HMO, and complain to NHIA if covered care is charged.

What receipts should I keep for hospital payments in Nigeria?

Your transfer confirmation, every official hospital receipt, and the final discharge bill showing how deposits were applied.
