Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Opening an African grocery in Manchester: setup costs

What it costs to open an African grocery in Manchester: lease, fit-out, first stock, registrations and insurance, with a budget you can adapt.

The short answer

An African grocery in Manchester has five main setup costs: the lease and its upfront payments, the fit-out (shelving, chillers, freezers, till), the first stock order, registrations and licences, and insurance. Food business registration with the council is free and must be done at least 28 days before you open; the larger bills are rent deposits, refrigeration and stock, which you should price from real quotes rather than averages.

Nigerians in Manchester have been asking for the same things for years: fresh and frozen fish, yam, garri, palm oil, egusi, pepper, plantain, ponmo, drinks and the brands people grew up with. A well-run shop can serve that demand, but the first year is decided by how much cash goes into the shop before the doors open. This guide sets out every cost line, what is a legal requirement, and how to build a budget from quotes rather than guesses.

The five cost lines

  1. Premises. Rent, a rent deposit (landlords commonly ask for several months up front), legal fees for the lease, and business rates billed by Manchester City Council.
  2. Fit-out. Shelving, chest freezers and upright chillers, a fish or meat counter if you sell fresh produce, lighting, signage, a till and card reader, CCTV and any electrical work the chillers need.
  3. First stock. Dry goods, frozen fish and meat, fresh produce, drinks and toiletries. Frozen and fresh stock ties up the most cash and spoils if you over-order.
  4. Registrations and licences. Company or sole trader set-up, food business registration, an alcohol licence if you sell drinks with alcohol, and data protection registration if you keep customer records.
  5. Insurance and working capital. Shop insurance, employers' liability once you hire, and enough cash to pay rent and suppliers for the first few slow months.

Food business registration

Any business that sells, cooks, stores, handles, prepares or distributes food must register with its local council. Council guidance says to register at least 28 days before you start trading, that registration is free, and that the council cannot refuse it. The council will then contact or visit the business within 28 days of opening. In Manchester you register with Manchester City Council (or the borough council if your shop is in Salford, Trafford, Oldham or another Greater Manchester borough).

Alcohol

Selling beer, stout or wine needs a licence under the Licensing Act 2003, granted by the council's licensing team, and a named person who holds a personal licence. If you plan to sell alcohol, apply early: the process involves notices and a consultation period, and your lease may need to allow it. Many new shops open without alcohol and add it later.

Employers' liability insurance

Once you employ anyone, even one part-time shop assistant, employers' liability insurance is compulsory. Insurers describe the legal minimum as £5 million of cover, with fines of up to £2,500 for each day without it. Public liability and stock cover are not legal requirements but most landlords and lenders expect them.

A worked budget you can adapt

The figures below are an example only, to show how the lines add up for a small unit. They are not Manchester market rates; replace each one with quotes from agents, shopfitters and wholesalers before you sign anything.

Line (example figures)Amount
Rent deposit and first quarter in advance£9,000
Lease legal fees£1,500
Shelving, signage, lighting£6,000
Two chest freezers and two upright chillers£5,000
Till, card reader, CCTV£1,500
First stock order (dry, frozen, fresh, drinks)£12,000
Insurance, first year£1,000
Working capital for three months£8,000
Total (example)£44,000

In this example, stock and premises together take £22,500 of the £44,000, roughly half. That is typical of the pattern: the shop is a stock business, and most of the risk sits in what you buy before you know what sells.

Where the money leaks in the first year

  • Frozen stock spoilage. A chiller failure over a weekend can destroy a whole delivery. Ask your insurer whether stock deterioration is covered.
  • Over-ordering slow lines. Start with a narrow range of fast sellers and add brands customers ask for.
  • Business rates. Rates are set from the property's rateable value. Ask the council whether small business rate relief applies before you budget the full bill.
  • Importing directly too soon. Bringing food in from Nigeria yourself means meeting UK import and food safety controls. Most new shops buy from UK wholesalers that already handle import checks, and only import directly once volumes justify it.
  • Currency. If you pay suppliers in Nigeria, your costs move with the pound-naira rate. Price that risk into your margins rather than absorbing it.

What to check first

  1. Walk the area at different times and count footfall near other African and Caribbean shops.
  2. Get the lease reviewed: use class, permission for chillers and signage, break clause, repair obligations.
  3. Register the food business with the council at least 28 days before opening.
  4. Decide whether to sell alcohol now or later, and speak to the licensing team.
  5. Get three quotes each for refrigeration, fit-out and insurance.
  6. Read our guides to insurance for a Nigerian food shop and business rates relief for small shops.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme Business Account holds pounds and naira (plus dollars and euros) in one place, so takings in pounds and payments to suppliers in Nigeria sit side by side. When you pay a Nigerian supplier, Swap shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's financial activities are carried out through regulated partners; Pryme is a technology company, not a bank.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to open an African shop in Manchester?

It depends on the unit, the fit-out and how much stock you start with. Build the figure from quotes: rent deposit and advance rent, refrigeration, shelving, first stock, insurance and three months of working capital. The example in this guide comes to £44,000, but that is an illustration, not a market average.

Do I need a licence to sell food in my shop?

You do not need a licence to sell ordinary groceries, but you must register as a food business with the council at least 28 days before trading. Registration is free and cannot be refused.

Do I need a licence to sell alcohol in an African grocery?

Yes. Selling alcohol needs a premises licence from the council and a named person with a personal licence. Ask Manchester City Council's licensing team before you sign the lease.

Is insurance compulsory for a small shop?

Employers' liability is compulsory once you employ staff, at a minimum of £5 million of cover. Other cover, such as public liability and stock, is optional in law but usually expected by landlords.
