Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Married to a non-Nigerian: how your Nigerian assets are treated

Nigerian law has no automatic shared marital property. Title, proof of contribution and a valid will decide what a foreign spouse can claim.

The short answer

Nigerian law does not make property bought during a marriage automatically joint: an asset generally belongs to whoever holds title, and on divorce under the Matrimonial Causes Act a High Court can order a settlement it finds "just and equitable", with proof of financial contribution weighing heavily. On death, a valid will decides who inherits your Nigerian assets; without one, state intestacy law or customary or Islamic rules apply, which may not match what you and a non-Nigerian spouse expect.

Many Nigerians abroad marry someone from their new country, then keep or build assets at home: a plot in Lekki, a family house in Enugu, shares on the Nigerian Exchange, a naira savings account. Two questions follow. What happens to those assets if the marriage ends? And what happens to them if you die? The answers depend on Nigerian law, on the law where you live, and on paperwork you control today.

No automatic "matrimonial property" in Nigeria

Some countries treat earnings and assets acquired during a marriage as owned by both spouses. The US Internal Revenue Service, for example, lists nine community property states (Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin) and says the law of the place where a couple is domiciled decides whether community property rules apply. Nigeria has no equivalent statute. A house registered in your name is, on paper, yours; a plot bought in your sibling's name is, on paper, your sibling's.

That matters for a non-Nigerian spouse in two directions. A spouse who paid towards a Nigerian property that is titled only in your name may struggle to prove a share. And you may struggle to prove your share of an asset abroad that is titled only in your spouse's name, if the law there works the same way.

If the marriage ends: what a Nigerian court looks at

For a statutory marriage, divorce and property orders in Nigeria come under the Matrimonial Causes Act. Section 72 lets the court order either spouse to settle property for the benefit of the other spouse and the children, where that is "just and equitable in the circumstances of the case". A commentary by CM Advocates on how courts use that power makes three practical points:

  • The court's discretion is wide, and appeal courts rarely disturb it unless the result was unjust.
  • Contribution counts heavily. In Essien v Essien (2009), following Adaku Amadi v Nwosu (1992), the court required proof of direct financial contribution to the purchase price or mortgage before inferring joint ownership.
  • Where no contribution is shown, a spouse may receive only a modest settlement to meet basic needs; the article cites Doherty v Doherty (2009), where the applicant was given a three-bedroom flat.

Section 2(2) of the Act limits dissolution proceedings in Nigeria to a person domiciled in Nigeria. Many diaspora couples therefore divorce where they live. Section 81 says Nigeria recognises a foreign dissolution where a party was domiciled in that country when proceedings began, among other grounds. A foreign court may also look at your Nigerian assets: the financial statement used in English divorce proceedings (Form E) asks for all assets, including those outside England and Wales. Whether a foreign order can be enforced against land in Nigeria is a separate question for a Nigerian lawyer.

Customary and Islamic marriages

The Matrimonial Causes Act covers statutory (registry or licensed church) marriages. A customary marriage is dissolved under customary law, and an Islamic marriage under Islamic law, with different property outcomes. If you married your spouse abroad under that country's civil law, ask a lawyer which regime a Nigerian court would apply.

If you die: will, intestacy or custom

This is where a non-Nigerian spouse is most exposed. Without a will, the rules that decide who inherits Nigerian property depend on the state and on your personal law. Under the Lagos Administration of Estates Law 2015, as summarised by The Trusted Advisors, children share equally regardless of gender and a surviving spouse and children rank above other relatives. The Supreme Court in Ukeje v Ukeje (2014) held that an Igbo custom excluding daughters breached the Constitution, and in Nzekwu v Nzekwu (1989) that a widow could not be evicted from her husband's house by his family. Under Islamic rules, shares are fixed and differ by relationship.

A will lets you decide. Nigerian wills follow the Wills Act 1837 and state Wills Laws. The core requirements, as set out by The Trusted Advisors in 2024, are:

  1. In writing, in any language.
  2. Signed by you, or by someone at your direction in your presence.
  3. Witnessed by at least two competent witnesses who sign in your presence and each other's.
  4. Witnesses must not be beneficiaries, or they risk losing their gift.
  5. Minimum age: 18 under the Lagos Wills Law, 21 under the Wills Act as received in some states.

Bank accounts deserve a specific word: naming someone as next of kin on a Nigerian account does not make them the heir. Our Nigeria library explains why in does next of kin inherit a bank account. Executors abroad also need workable authority; see inheriting from Nigeria after moving abroad.

What to check first

  • Whose name is on each Nigerian title document, share certificate and account.
  • Records of who paid for what: transfer receipts, statements, developer receipts. Contribution is what a Nigerian court will ask to see.
  • What type of marriage you have, and whether it is recognised in both countries; see is a Nigerian marriage recognised abroad.
  • Whether you have a valid will that covers Nigerian assets, with executors who can act from abroad or through a power of attorney.
  • Whether your spouse knows where documents are kept.

Where Pryme fits

Clear records help in both a divorce and an estate. A Pryme account can be opened from any country and holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros in one place (multicurrency account), so payments towards Nigerian property leave one traceable trail. Any customer can generate a verifiable statement through our partner VerifyDoc.ai, which a lawyer or court can check is unaltered (receipts and statements). None of this is legal advice; speak to a family or probate lawyer in both countries.

Questions people ask

Does my foreign wife or husband automatically own half my house in Nigeria?

No. Nigeria has no community property statute. Title generally decides ownership, and on divorce a court can order a settlement under section 72 of the Matrimonial Causes Act, weighing proof of contribution.

Can a divorce court abroad deal with my Nigerian land?

It can take your Nigerian assets into account when dividing property; the English Form E, for example, asks for assets outside England and Wales. Enforcing a foreign order against land in Nigeria is a separate step for a Nigerian lawyer.

Who inherits my Nigerian property if I die without a will?

It depends on the state and your personal law. Lagos law ranks spouse and children above other relatives and treats children equally; customary and Islamic rules differ. A will avoids the uncertainty.

Is a will made abroad valid in Nigeria?

Nigerian wills follow the Wills Act 1837 and state Wills Laws: writing, signature, two witnesses who are not beneficiaries. Many people make a separate Nigerian will for Nigerian assets; ask a Nigerian probate lawyer to check either route.
