Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

NYSC certificate verification for a job abroad

How an employer or evaluator abroad can confirm an NYSC discharge or exemption certificate, what NYSC charges, and how to make the check go quickly.

The short answer

NYSC verifies certificates on request from the organisation checking them, for a charge NYSC publishes: ₦20,000 for private organisations and law firms, ₦5,000 for government bodies, nothing for security agencies (page updated 19 August 2024). There is no separate published category or online portal for foreign employers, so most checks abroad go through a background screening firm, a law firm or a written request to NYSC headquarters in Abuja.

Many Nigerian graduates are asked for their NYSC certificate when they apply for jobs abroad, especially in health, education, banking and the public sector, where employers check every year of a CV. The certificate of national service (or the exemption or exclusion document) explains the year after graduation and, for some employers, is evidence that the degree itself was recognised in Nigeria. This article covers how the check is done and how to help it along.

What the employer is checking

An employer or evaluator abroad usually wants to know three things:

  • That the certificate was issued by NYSC and has not been altered.
  • That the name, call-up number and service year match your other documents.
  • Which document you hold: a certificate of national service, an exemption certificate or an exclusion letter.

The difference matters. According to the NYSC Act, as summarised by the ICIR, exemption applies to graduates who were over 30 at graduation, who served in the armed forces or police for more than nine months, who are staff of certain security agencies, or who hold a national honour. An exemption certificate is not a failure; it is a different document, and the employer should be told which one to expect.

Inside Nigeria the check is a legal expectation, not a courtesy. TheWill reported in 2021 that the NYSC Director-General reminded employers that section 12 of the NYSC Act makes it the duty of prospective employers to demand and obtain the certificate before hiring. Employers abroad have no such duty, but those that recruit many Nigerians often copy the practice.

How verification works

NYSC's own pages publish a price list for certificate verification but do not describe a public online portal for it. The charges, last updated 19 August 2024, are:

Requesting bodyNYSC charge (as at Aug 2024)
Private organisations and law firms₦20,000
Government bodies₦5,000
Bulk agents₦5,000
Security agenciesNil

The page does not list a foreign-organisation category, a payment method or a turnaround time. In practice the employer, its screening provider, or a Nigerian law firm acting for it writes to NYSC with a copy of the certificate and pays the charge. NYSC headquarters is at 416 Tigris Crescent, Maitama, Abuja (PMB 138 Garki), and the general email is info@nysc.gov.ng.

Worked example

Example only: a care provider in Leeds uses a screening firm that treats the request as a private organisation check. At the published ₦20,000, the firm's cost from NYSC is ₦20,000, plus its own service fee and any courier charges. If the employer asks you to pay, ask for an invoice from the screening firm rather than sending money to an individual.

Why checks get delayed

  1. Name mismatches. A married name on your passport but a maiden name on the certificate. Send a marriage certificate or affidavit with the request.
  2. Unclear copies. Send a clear colour scan of both sides, including the call-up number.
  3. Old certificates. Records from older service years may take longer to retrieve.
  4. Unclaimed certificates. If you never collected your certificate, NYSC charges to release it: ₦5,000 if five years or less, ₦10,000 for five to nine years, ₦20,000 for ten years or more, waived if illness is shown.

If the certificate is lost, NYSC lists ₦20,000 for loss of a certificate of national service or exemption certificate. The replacement process is covered in replacing a lost NYSC certificate from abroad.

Other places the certificate turns up

  • Nigerian missions. The Nigeria High Commission in London asks Nigerian graduate students registering with its consular section for an NYSC discharge or exemption certificate.
  • Degree checks. Employers often check the degree at the same time; see Nigerian degree verification and WAEC result verification.
  • Graduates of foreign universities. NYSC verifies foreign credentials physically before mobilisation or before issuing an exemption certificate or exclusion letter, and does not accept downloaded certificates or statements of result for that purpose.

What to check first

  1. Find the original certificate and make a clear colour scan of both sides.
  2. Check that the name matches your passport; prepare linking documents if not.
  3. Ask the employer whether it, a screening firm or you must start the request.
  4. Keep copies of every email and any receipt from NYSC or the screening firm.

Where Pryme fits

If you are asked to cover a naira charge or a lawyer's fee in Nigeria, a Pryme account lets you hold naira alongside your local currency and pay from it, with each payment recorded. You can also generate a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai to show an employer what you paid; see receipts and statements and one account, four currencies.

Questions people ask

How can an employer abroad verify my NYSC certificate?

By writing to NYSC (directly, through a screening firm or a Nigerian law firm) with a copy of the certificate and paying NYSC's verification charge. NYSC does not publish an online portal for this.

How much does NYSC charge to verify a certificate?

NYSC's price page (updated 19 August 2024) lists ₦20,000 for private organisations and law firms, ₦5,000 for government bodies and bulk agents, and nil for security agencies.

Is an NYSC exemption certificate accepted for jobs abroad?

It is a valid NYSC document. Tell the employer you hold an exemption certificate so it checks the right record.

I never collected my NYSC certificate. Can I still get it?

Yes. NYSC charges ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 depending on how long it has been unclaimed, waived if illness is shown.
