Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian visa on arrival for US citizens of Nigerian origin

Visa on arrival has ended. The two routes left for US passport holders with Nigerian parents: a Nigerian passport, or the F9A visa for returning Nigerians.

The short answer

Nigeria no longer issues visas on arrival: the e-visa took over in May 2025, and official travel advice now says visa on arrival is no longer available. A US citizen of Nigerian origin therefore has two routes: travel on a valid Nigerian passport, or apply in advance for the F9A visa for Nigerians by birth on foreign passports, which NIS issues for 90 days with multiple entries of up to 30 days each.

What happened to visa on arrival

For years, Nigerians abroad with a foreign passport talked about getting a visa "at the airport". That route has closed. Reporting on the change, the fact-checking platform Dubawa said Nigeria's e-visa came into force on 1 May 2025 and that visas on arrival already issued stayed valid until 30 May 2025. The UK Foreign Office's Nigeria entry page, updated on 16 October 2026, says in terms that "visa on arrival is no longer available".

The US Department of State's Nigeria page, updated 25 June 2026, says a visa is required for US passport holders and must be obtained before travel. It does not mention an arrival option. If anyone offers you a visa on arrival for a fee, treat it as a warning sign.

Route one: travel on your Nigerian passport

If you were born to a Nigerian parent, you are Nigerian by birth under section 25 of the Constitution. A Nigerian by birth can hold another nationality; our guide to whether renunciation is ever needed explains the constitutional rule. A Nigerian citizen does not need a visa to enter Nigeria. So the simplest route is a valid Nigerian passport.

There is a second reason to hold one. The State Department says US-Nigeria dual nationals "are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria". If you enter on a US passport and your Nigerian passport has expired, plan for that before you fly. For first passports and renewals, see our guide to booking a passport renewal appointment in the US.

Route two: the F9A visa for returning Nigerians

If your Nigerian passport has lapsed, or you have never had one, NIS has a dedicated short-visit category: Returning Holders of Foreign Passports (Nigerians by Birth), code F9A. NIS describes it as being "for Nigerians by birth traveling on a foreign passport to re-enter Nigeria", with eligibility under sections 25 and 31 of the Constitution.

NIS lists these documents:

  • A valid foreign passport with at least six months' validity.
  • Proof of Nigerian parentage, such as a birth certificate naming a Nigerian parent.
  • A return ticket.
  • Your parents' passport data pages.
  • A valid Nigerian passport, where applicable.
  • A passport-size photo.

Children under 18 travelling with a parent use the related F9B category, which adds a birth certificate showing both parents' full names, the Nigerian parent's valid passport and an application letter from the parent.

Which route suits you

Your situationLikely best route
Valid Nigerian passport in handEnter and leave on it; no visa
Nigerian passport expired, trip soonF9A visa on your US passport, and renew the Nigerian passport when you can
Never had a Nigerian passportF9A for this trip; consider a first Nigerian passport for future exits
You formally renounced Nigerian citizenshipNot F9A; NIS has a separate N2A category

Proving you are Nigerian by birth

The F9A turns on one thing: proof of Nigerian parentage. NIS asks for it in general terms, and for minors it gives examples such as a birth certificate showing Nigerian parents or an old Nigerian passport. In practice the strongest bundle is the one that leaves no gap between you and your Nigerian parent:

  • Your birth certificate naming the parent. A US birth certificate works if it shows both parents' names.
  • That parent's Nigerian passport data page, current or expired.
  • Your own old Nigerian passport, if you ever had one.
  • Where names differ across documents (a mother's maiden name, for example), a marriage certificate or affidavit that explains the link.

Upload clear colour scans. A blurred data page is one of the easiest ways to slow an application that should be simple.

Before you fly

  • Check that the names on your US passport, your Nigerian documents and your proof of parentage line up. Differences in spelling or order cause questions at every stage.
  • Carry yellow fever and polio certificates: the State Department says both are required for travellers over nine months old.
  • If you are travelling with children who are dual nationals, bring notarised consent where a parent is not travelling.
  • Keep the e-visa approval printed and on your phone.

Where Pryme fits

Whichever passport you use, you will want naira on landing. A Pryme account opened from the US holds dollars and naira with local details for each, and Swap converts when you choose, showing the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank; outside Nigeria Pryme works through regulated partners. See how it works.

Questions people ask

Is there still visa on arrival in Nigeria for Americans?

No. The e-visa replaced it in May 2025, and current official travel advice says visa on arrival is no longer available. Apply before you travel.

I am Nigerian by birth with a US passport. Do I need a visa?

Only if you travel on the US passport. On a valid Nigerian passport you need no visa. On a US passport, the F9A visa is designed for you.

How long can I stay on the F9A visa?

NIS says up to 30 days per entry, with multiple entries during the 90 days the visa is valid.

Can I leave Nigeria on my US passport?

The US State Department says US-Nigeria dual nationals are now required to have a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria. Check this before you travel.
