Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United Arab Emirates

Do Nigerians in the UAE pay Nigerian tax on UAE salary?

The UAE does not tax salaries, so the question is whether Nigeria does. How Nigeria's residence tests under the 2025 tax law decide it, and what to keep.

The short answer

Only if you are tax resident in Nigeria. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 a resident is taxed on worldwide income, while a non-resident is taxed only on income from Nigeria; a UAE salary for work done in the UAE is foreign income. You are resident if any one test applies, including domicile, a permanent home available to you, habitual abode, 183 days in Nigeria in any 12 months, or substantial economic or immediate family ties, so moving abroad does not by itself make you non-resident.

The UAE government portal is clear that "the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals". For Nigerians working in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, that leaves one question: can Nigeria tax the salary instead? The answer turns on residence, and the 2025 reforms made the residence tests broader than many people assume.

Residence decides it

PwC's summary of Nigerian individual residence (reviewed 29 May 2026) says a person is resident if any of the following applies:

  • domiciled in Nigeria;
  • has a permanent home available for domestic use in Nigeria;
  • has a place of habitual abode in Nigeria;
  • spends at least 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, including temporary absences;
  • has substantial economic or immediate family ties in Nigeria;
  • is a Nigerian diplomat abroad.

A Mondaq analysis by S.P.A. Ajibade & Co (27 October 2025) places these tests in chapter six of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and notes that the Act's wording on "substantial economic and immediate family ties" is not defined, and that the statutory list and commentary differ on whether "and" or "or" applies. That uncertainty matters for anyone whose spouse, children or business remain in Nigeria.

Nolands' September 2026 note on non-resident individuals puts the same rule from the other side: you are non-resident only if none of the tests applies, meaning you are not domiciled in Nigeria, have no permanent place available for domestic use, no habitual abode, no substantial economic or immediate family ties, spend under 183 days in 12 months and are not a diplomat.

If you are resident: worldwide income

PwC's summary says a resident's income is taxed regardless of where it arises or whether it is brought into Nigeria. A Nigerian-resident person working in the UAE could therefore be taxable in Nigeria on the UAE salary, and there would be no UAE tax to credit against it. No Nigeria-UAE treaty is shown as in force to break a tie; see the treaty's status.

If you are non-resident: Nigerian income only

Non-residents are taxed only on income derived from Nigeria. A UAE salary for work done in the UAE is not Nigerian income. PwC's summary also describes when employment income counts as Nigerian: broadly where the employee is resident and the duties are performed wholly or partly in Nigeria. If a Nigerian employer pays you while you work from Dubai, the analysis is different; see paid by a Nigerian employer while living in Dubai.

Three situations

Moved with family, sold or let your home, rarely visit
Likely non-resident, so the UAE salary is outside Nigerian tax. Nigerian rent or gains are still taxable in Nigeria.
Spouse and children remain in Lagos, you visit often
The family-ties test and a home available to you may make you resident, bringing the UAE salary into Nigerian tax.
Splitting time roughly evenly
The 183-day test may apply in any 12-month window, not only a calendar year. See splitting time between Nigeria and the UAE.

Common misunderstandings

  • "I have a UAE residence visa, so I am not Nigerian-resident." A UAE visa says nothing about Nigerian tests. Nigeria looks at your days, home, abode and ties.
  • "I only spend a few weeks a year in Nigeria." Days are one test of several. A home kept available for you, or immediate family in Nigeria, can make you resident on its own.
  • "Nobody will know about my UAE salary." Tax authorities exchange financial account information internationally; see whether UAE banks report accounts to Nigeria.
  • "Paying no UAE tax means I owe nothing anywhere." True only if you are non-resident in Nigeria, or if no other country taxes you.

If you conclude you are resident, the next question is how to file and pay with the NRS, and whether any relief applies. Take advice before the first return is due rather than after. Keep a note of how you reached your conclusion, with the dates and facts you relied on, so you can explain it later if the NRS asks.

Money you send home

The NGEX diaspora guide hosted by NiDCOM (January 2026) says remittances and gifts are not taxable. Sending part of your salary to family is not itself a taxable event in Nigeria; what matters is whether you are resident.

What to keep

  1. A record of your days in Nigeria, with passport stamps and travel bookings.
  2. Your UAE employment contract, residence visa and tenancy contract.
  3. Evidence of where your home and family are.
  4. A UAE tax residency certificate if you obtain one; see UAE tax residency certificates.
  5. Records of any Nigerian income, which you may need to file for with the NRS by 31 March of the following year, as Nolands notes for non-residents.

Questions people ask

Do I pay Nigerian tax on my Dubai salary?

Only if you are tax resident in Nigeria. Non-residents are taxed only on income from Nigeria, and a UAE salary for UAE work is not Nigerian income.

Does the UAE tax my salary?

No. The UAE government portal says the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals.

Can my family in Nigeria make me tax resident there?

Possibly. The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 includes substantial economic or immediate family ties among the residence tests, and they are not defined.

Is the 183-day rule per calendar year?

PwC's summary describes it as at least 183 days in any 12-month period, including temporary absences.
