Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Is there a Nigeria-UAE double tax treaty in force?

Nigeria and the UAE signed a tax treaty in 2016 and Nigeria approved it in 2024. What we could confirm about its status in October 2026 and what it means.

The short answer

Nigeria and the UAE signed a double taxation agreement on 18 January 2016, and Nigeria's cabinet approved it on 17 January 2024, but it enters into force only once the two countries exchange ratification instruments. As at October 2026 we found no official Nigerian notice that this has happened, and the UAE is absent from the treaty lists in the FIRS 2022 circular, PwC's May 2026 summary and the NiDCOM-hosted January 2026 diaspora guide. Treat it as not yet in force unless the NRS confirms otherwise.

If you earn in the UAE and own property, shares or a business in Nigeria, a tax treaty between the two countries would matter: it decides which country may tax which income and caps some withholding taxes. The question people ask is simple, and the honest answer has two parts: what has happened, and what we could not confirm.

What has happened

DateStepSource
18 January 2016Treaty signed, the first of its kind between the two countriesOrbitax, 22 January 2024
17 January 2024Approved by Nigeria's cabinetOrbitax, 22 January 2024
Not confirmedExchange of ratification instruments, which brings it into forceNo official notice found

Orbitax's report of the approval says the treaty "will enter into force once the ratification instruments are exchanged" and will apply from 1 January of the year after it enters into force. So approval in Nigeria was a necessary step, not the last one.

What the official lists show

Three lists we could open leave the UAE out:

  • FIRS Information Circular 2022/15 (11 May 2022) lists 16 treaties in force: Italy (air and shipping only), the UK, Belgium, Pakistan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, the Netherlands, Romania, Canada, South Africa, China, the Philippines, Sweden, Spain and Singapore. It predates the 2024 approval.
  • PwC's Nigeria withholding tax summary (reviewed 29 May 2026) gives treaty rates for those partners, notes ECOWAS treaties not in force and several others not yet ratified, and does not list the UAE.
  • The NGEX diaspora guide to Nigeria's 2026 tax reforms, hosted by NiDCOM (January 2026), lists the 16 treaty countries and does not include the UAE.

On the UAE side, the Ministry of Finance's treaty page (updated 22 October 2026) says the UAE has concluded 137 double taxation agreements but does not list them on the page; its treaty dashboard could not be read country by country. We have not found an NRS list published since the Nigeria Revenue Service replaced FIRS. Until the NRS publishes one or confirms entry into force, the safe reading is that the treaty is signed and approved in Nigeria but not shown as in force.

What it would change, and what it would not

For most Nigerians working in the UAE, the practical stakes are smaller than they seem. The UAE government portal states that "the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals". So a UAE salary is not taxed twice in the usual sense: it is either taxed in Nigeria, if you are Nigerian-resident under Nigerian rules, or not at all. A treaty would mainly help with:

  • Residence conflicts. Treaties usually contain a tie-breaker for someone both countries treat as resident; without one, Nigeria applies its own tests.
  • Withholding tax on Nigerian income such as dividends, interest and royalties paid to UAE residents, where treaties often cap the rate. Without a treaty in force, the domestic rates in Nigeria's withholding rules apply.
  • Businesses with operations in both countries, where permanent establishment rules matter.

Why the status is easy to get wrong

News reports of the 2016 signing and of the 2024 approval are easy to find, and both are often read as meaning the treaty is now in force. Neither step does that on its own. A treaty binds only once each country has completed its own approval process and the two have exchanged the instruments confirming it, and it then usually applies from a set date. That is also why the FIRS circular, PwC and the NGEX guide list several treaties as signed or approved but not in force. If an adviser, bank or buyer tells you treaty rates apply, ask which notice they are relying on.

Rent from Nigerian property and gains on Nigerian land are usually taxable where the property sits under most treaties, so a treaty would be unlikely to change much for landlords. See Lagos rent tax for UAE residents.

Relief without a treaty

The NGEX guide says Nigeria gives a unilateral tax credit for foreign tax even where there is no treaty. That matters only where foreign tax is actually paid; for a UAE salary there is usually none. For the residence rules that decide whether Nigeria taxes your UAE pay, see Nigerian tax on a UAE salary, and for proving UAE residence, UAE tax residency certificates. Our Nigeria library covers withholding tax under the 2025 tax laws.

What to check first

  1. Look for a current treaty list or notice on the NRS website.
  2. If you rely on treaty treatment for a payment, ask the payer's tax adviser to confirm entry into force in writing.
  3. Keep evidence of your UAE residence and days in each country whatever the status.

Questions people ask

Does Nigeria have a tax treaty with the UAE?

One was signed on 18 January 2016 and approved by Nigeria's cabinet on 17 January 2024. We found no official confirmation that it has entered into force as at October 2026.

When will the Nigeria-UAE treaty take effect?

From 1 January of the year after the two countries exchange ratification instruments, according to Orbitax's report of the approval.

Which countries have tax treaties in force with Nigeria?

FIRS's 2022 circular lists 16: Italy (air and shipping), the UK, Belgium, Pakistan, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, France, the Netherlands, Romania, Canada, South Africa, China, the Philippines, Sweden, Spain and Singapore.

Am I taxed twice on my UAE salary without a treaty?

Usually not, because the UAE does not levy income tax on individuals. Nigeria may tax it if you are Nigerian-resident under its rules.
