Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Australia

Does Nigeria tax me if I live in Australia?

Nigeria taxes non-residents only on Nigerian-source income, but its residency tests include family ties and a home kept for you. Where you stand.

The short answer

If you are not resident in Nigeria for tax, Nigeria taxes only income that arises in Nigeria, such as rent from Nigerian property, Nigerian interest and dividends, usually through 10% withholding. If you are still resident under the Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria can tax your worldwide income, including your Australian salary. The Act treats you as non-resident only if none of its tests apply, and those tests include a permanent home available in Nigeria and substantial economic or immediate family ties there.

The Nigerian residency tests

Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, residency is not just about days. A Mondaq summary of section 201 (30 September 2026) and PwC's Nigeria residence page (reviewed 29 May 2026) describe the same set of tests. You are resident if any one of these applies:

  • you are domiciled in Nigeria;
  • you have a permanent place available for your domestic use in Nigeria;
  • Nigeria is your place of habitual abode;
  • you spend at least 183 days in Nigeria in any 12-month period, counting temporary absences;
  • you have substantial economic ties or immediate family ties in Nigeria;
  • you serve as a Nigerian diplomat abroad.

PwC adds that you are non-resident only if none of these applies. For many Nigerians in Australia the risky tests are the second and fifth: a house kept ready for you in Lagos, or a spouse and children still living in Nigeria, can point to residence even if you spend most of the year in Melbourne. The Act's wording on "substantial" ties is not defined in the summaries we used, so treat this as a question to settle with the NRS or an adviser if it applies to you.

If you are non-resident: what Nigeria still taxes

Mondaq quotes section 17(1): income, profits or gains of a non-resident accruing in or derived from Nigeria are chargeable. The diaspora guide on the NiDCOM site says the same in plainer terms: non-residents are taxed only on Nigerian-source income, and services physically performed outside Nigeria are not taxable unless you are tax resident.

IncomeTaxed in Nigeria if you are non-resident?How it is usually collected
Australian salary for work done in AustraliaNoNot applicable
Freelance work done from Australia for Nigerian clientsThe NiDCOM-hosted guide says services performed outside Nigeria are not taxable for non-residents; withholding may still be deducted by payersCheck with the payer and the NRS
Rent from Nigerian propertyYes10% withholding by tenant or agent; returns may be needed
Nigerian bank interestYes10% withholding by the bank
Dividends from Nigerian companiesYes10% withholding; Mondaq says it is the final tax for passive income
Foreign pension, money sent homeThe guide says foreign pensions are not taxed in Nigeria and remittances and gifts are not taxableNot applicable

The withholding rates are from PwC's withholding tax summary (reviewed 29 May 2026): 10% on dividends, interest and rent.

Filing as a non-resident

Mondaq says non-resident individuals whose only Nigerian income is passive, such as dividends, pay only the withholding tax, and that non-residents with other Nigerian income should register with the NRS Non-Resident Persons Tax Office, get a Tax ID and file returns by 31 March of the following year. The NRS, which replaced FIRS, deals with non-residents rather than the state tax services. For the Tax ID itself, see what the Tax Administration Act requires.

If you are resident in both countries

There is no tax treaty between Australia and Nigeria, so no tie-breaker decides which country has first claim; see whether a treaty exists. Each country applies its own rules. If both treat you as resident, both can tax your worldwide income, and relief depends on each country's own credit rules. The diaspora guide on the NiDCOM site says Nigeria gives a unilateral credit even without a treaty; on the Australian side, the ATO's foreign income tax offset applies to Nigerian tax actually paid.

Worked example

Example only. Chidi moved to Brisbane two years ago with his wife and children. He sold his Lagos home but still owns a flat in Ibadan that is let. He visits for three weeks a year.

  • Days: well under 183 in any 12 months.
  • Home: the Ibadan flat is let to a tenant, so it is unlikely to count as a place available for his own use.
  • Family: his immediate family live with him in Australia.
  • Likely outcome on these facts: non-resident in Nigeria. Nigeria taxes the Ibadan rent, usually by 10% withholding, and his Australian salary is outside Nigerian tax.
  • If instead his wife and children had stayed in Lagos in a family home, the family ties and available home tests could point the other way.

What to check first

  1. Count your days in Nigeria in every rolling 12-month period, not just the calendar year.
  2. Ask whether a home in Nigeria is kept available for your use, even if you rarely stay in it.
  3. Note where your spouse and children live and where your main economic ties are.
  4. List each Nigerian income source and how tax is already taken from it.
  5. If you have income beyond passive withholding, check whether you need an NRS Tax ID and a return by 31 March.

Where Pryme fits

If you keep naira income in Nigeria, a Pryme account gives one record of rent and interest received, and verifiable statements through VerifyDoc.ai can support what you tell either tax authority. See multicurrency accounts and open an account from Australia.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax in Nigeria if I live in Australia?

Only on Nigerian-source income, such as Nigerian rent, interest and dividends, if you are non-resident in Nigeria. If you are still resident under the Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria can tax your worldwide income.

Can Nigeria tax my Australian salary?

Not if you are non-resident in Nigeria and the work is done in Australia. If a Nigerian residency test applies to you, such as a home available for your use or immediate family ties, it could.

Is the 183-day rule the only test for Nigerian tax residence?

No. Under the Nigeria Tax Act you are resident if any test applies, including domicile, a permanent home available for your use, habitual abode, or substantial economic or family ties.

Do I need to file a Nigerian tax return as a non-resident?

If your only Nigerian income is passive, such as dividends, withholding tax is described as final. With other Nigerian income, Mondaq says you register with the NRS, get a Tax ID and file by 31 March.
