Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Moving back to Nigeria: is your foreign income taxed?

Once you are Nigerian tax resident, the 2025 Act taxes worldwide income, with an exemption for some income brought home through approved channels.

The short answer

Yes, once you become tax resident in Nigeria. Under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, residents are taxed on worldwide income, while non-residents are taxed only on income from Nigeria. There is an exemption for foreign dividends, interest, rent and royalties brought into Nigeria in convertible currency through government-approved channels into an account at an approved bank, and Nigeria gives residents a credit for foreign tax paid.

For years abroad, Nigeria probably taxed you only on Nigerian rent or interest. Returning changes that. The question is no longer whether your income comes from Nigeria but whether you are resident, and residence under the new law can start sooner than many returnees expect.

When you become resident

The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act took effect on 1 January 2026. Commentary on the residence rules (Mondaq, S.P.A. Ajibade & Co, October 2025; AELEX, January 2026) lists several tests, any of which can make an individual resident:

  • being in Nigeria for 183 days or more in a 12-month period, counting temporary absences;
  • having a permanent place available for your domestic use, or your habitual abode, in Nigeria;
  • having substantial economic and immediate family ties to Nigeria (not defined in the Act);
  • being a Nigerian earning employment or business income wholly or partly in Nigeria;
  • serving abroad as a Nigerian diplomat or government employee.

A returnee who moves into a family house in Lagos with a spouse and children will usually meet a test from day one, not after 183 days. For how a long visit can trigger residence, see how a visit home can make you resident.

What residence means: worldwide income

Section 12 of the Act taxes residents on worldwide income; non-residents are taxed only on income derived from Nigeria (Mondaq, October 2025). PwC's Nigeria summary (May 2026) confirms residents are taxed on worldwide income at the personal income tax rates of 0% to 25%.

Common foreign income after return

IncomeHow it is usually treated
Rent from a house you kept abroadWorldwide income; exemption may apply if brought in through approved channels; foreign tax creditable
Interest on a foreign savings accountAs above
Dividends from foreign sharesAs above
Salary from remote work for a foreign employer while living in NigeriaEmployment income; the exemption for dividends, interest, rent and royalties does not cover salary
Foreign pensionA NiDCOM-hosted diaspora guide says foreign pensions are not taxed unless earned for work in Nigeria; confirm with the NRS
Gains on foreign shares or propertyGains are added to income and taxed at PIT rates

The exemption for income brought home

PwC's income determination page (May 2026) describes an exemption for dividends, interest, rent and royalties earned abroad and brought into Nigeria in convertible currency through government-approved channels into a local account at an approved bank. In practice that means a documented bank transfer, not cash carried in a suitcase. Keep the transfer records with the foreign tax documents for each year.

Income left abroad does not obviously benefit from this exemption, and income from work is outside it. Read the conditions carefully, or ask a Nigerian tax adviser, before relying on it.

Credit for foreign tax

Where the exemption does not apply, PwC says Nigeria gives residents a unilateral credit for foreign tax, even where there is no treaty. Nigeria has treaties with countries including the UK, Canada, South Africa, France, the Netherlands and Spain (NiDCOM-hosted NGEX guide, January 2026). There is no US-Nigeria treaty. See which countries have a treaty with Nigeria.

The year you arrive

The old country may still treat you as resident for part of the year. The UK, for example, offers split-year treatment when you leave for full-time work abroad or cease to have a UK home, subject to conditions (LITRG, April 2026). Nigeria's own rules for a part year are not spelled out in the sources we read; see moving back mid-year. Personal income tax returns in Nigeria are due by 31 March for the previous year (NGEX guide).

Records to bring home

Nigerian tax officers will expect evidence for anything you claim is exempt or already taxed abroad. Before you leave, collect:

  • foreign tax returns and assessments for the last few years, and the final return for your year of departure;
  • tenancy agreements and letting agent statements for any property you keep abroad;
  • annual statements from foreign banks, brokers and pension schemes;
  • proof of each transfer into Nigeria through a bank, showing the currency and the receiving account;
  • a note of the date you arrived and where you lived, which supports the date residence began.

What to check first

  1. Which residence test you meet, and from what date.
  2. Every foreign income source you will keep: rent, interest, dividends, pension, remote salary.
  3. Whether each item can be brought home through an approved bank channel.
  4. What foreign tax each item already bears, and the documents proving it.
  5. Your Nigerian Tax ID and filing obligations; see tax bands for returnees.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds NGN, USD, GBP and EUR with local account details for each, so foreign rent or dividends can arrive by documented transfer and stay in the currency they arrived in until you Swap. See multicurrency; any customer can also generate a verifiable statement for tax records.

Questions people ask

Do I pay tax in Nigeria on my UK rent after I move back?

If you are Nigerian tax resident, foreign rent is part of worldwide income. An exemption may apply if it is brought in through approved channels into an approved bank, and UK tax paid can be credited.

When do I become a Nigerian tax resident after returning?

When you meet any residence test, such as 183 days in 12 months or having a permanent home or habitual abode in Nigeria. Moving into a family home can do it from arrival.

Is my remote salary from a foreign company taxed in Nigeria?

If you live and work in Nigeria, it is generally employment income of a resident. The exemption for dividends, interest, rent and royalties does not cover salary.

Does Nigeria tax my foreign pension?

A NiDCOM-hosted guide says foreign pensions are not taxed unless earned for work in Nigeria. Confirm with the NRS or an adviser.
