Ten years, one trunk

The business has changed shape four times and never changed what it was rooted in. Each version was built out of what the last one could not do.

2016E-commerce

An online grocery store, built out of a faulty tab. Selling the food was the easy part — taking the money for it, and moving it, turned out to be the business.

2018OjirehPrime Card

A prepaid card. The first time the company issued rather than resold, and the first time it carried the obligations that come with holding somebody else’s money.

2020Microfinance bank

PrymeSolid Allianze acquired — an existing bank with an existing licence. The perimeter stopped being someone else’s to draw.

2023Multicurrency

More than one currency on one balance, and the rebrand to Pryme. A Nigerian business could hold dollars without holding a second institution.

2026Agentic operations

Accounts that do the work rather than only hold value. Five agents on the account, inside a policy you write — which is where the new mark starts.

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Checking a Nigerian tax receipt is genuine

Before you claim credit abroad for Nigerian tax, make sure the WHT receipt or TCC is real. What each document should show and how to confirm it.

The short answer

Check that the document came from the right authority, that its details match your own records, and that the tax actually reached the Nigeria Revenue Service or state revenue service. For withholding tax, ask the payer for its credit note and confirm the credit appears on your own NRS account; for a tax clearance certificate, confirm it through the issuing authority's portal or office. Fraudulent tax clearance certificates have been a known problem, so never rely on a scan alone for a foreign tax claim.

Claiming a foreign tax credit means telling your tax office abroad that Nigeria already taxed the same income. If the Nigerian document is wrong, or the tax was never paid over, the credit can be refused later with interest and penalties. A few checks before you file avoid that.

Which Nigerian documents you might rely on

DocumentIssued byUsed for
Withholding tax (WHT) receipt or credit noteThe payer that deducted tax: your tenant, company or bankProving tax was deducted from rent, dividends, interest or fees
Tax clearance certificate (TCC)NRS (federal) or a state internal revenue serviceShowing your tax position for the last three years
Payment receipt or assessmentNRS or the state revenue serviceProving direct payment of personal income tax
Tenancy or dividend documentsTenant, company or registrarLinking the tax to the income

Withholding tax receipts

Under the Deduction of Tax at Source (Withholding) Regulations 2024, the person who deducts tax must issue a receipt to the person taxed, and the recipient gets credit on presenting it (PwC Nigeria highlights, July 2024). Tax must be remitted to the NRS by the 21st, or to a state service by the 30th, of the following month.

Checks

  1. Your name and Tax ID (or older TIN) are correct.
  2. The gross amount and the tax match the payment you actually received: rent of ₦5,000,000 with 10% WHT should show ₦500,000 deducted and ₦4,500,000 paid to you (example).
  3. The period and the payer's name and Tax ID are stated.
  4. The credit appears on your own NRS account. Rev360, launched on 30 April 2026, brings registration, filing, payment, refunds and TCCs into one interface and migrated existing taxpayers' compliance history (Templars, May 2026). Templars advises checking WHT credits after migration.
  5. If the credit is missing, ask the payer for the remittance evidence before you rely on the receipt.

Tax clearance certificates

The Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, section 72, says a TCC discloses, for the last three years, total profits or chargeable income, tax payable, tax paid and any outstanding amount, and must be issued within two weeks of demand or with reasons for refusal. TCCs are commonly valid for one year from issue (Mondaq, March 2025).

Fakes exist. The FIRS introduced electronic TCCs in 2017 partly to curb fraudulent certificates, describing an e-repository that would let authorised third parties verify them (ICIR, April 2017).

How to confirm a TCC

  • Federal TCCs: confirm through the NRS. Before Rev360, TCCs were generated at tcc.firs.gov.ng (Mondaq, March 2025); Rev360 now handles TCCs, so check the current verification route with the NRS.
  • State TCCs: some state revenue services offer online verification on their own portals; otherwise contact the state service directly.
  • Compare the certificate number, name, Tax ID and years with what the authority confirms.
  • Do not accept a 'verification' link sent by the person who gave you the certificate; go to the authority's site yourself.

Red flags

  • A TCC or receipt that arrives only as a photo on WhatsApp, with no way to check it with the authority.
  • Amounts that do not reconcile: the tax shown is not 10% of the gross rent, or the net paid to you does not match your bank statement.
  • A payer who cannot give its own Tax ID, or whose name differs from the company that pays you.
  • Requests to pay 'processing' or 'clearance' fees to a personal account to obtain a certificate.
  • A certificate covering years in which you know returns were never filed.

If something does not match

  1. Write to the payer and ask for the remittance evidence for the period in question.
  2. Check your own NRS or state account for the credit.
  3. If the tax was deducted but never paid over, raise it with the revenue service; you were still paid net, so keep the evidence of the deduction.
  4. Do not claim the credit abroad until you can show the tax was paid; correct the claim later if needed.

What the tax office abroad will ask

The IRS warns that the amount withheld is not necessarily the amount that qualifies for a foreign tax credit, and that only foreign income taxes qualify. Tax offices generally expect you to be able to show the tax was actually paid. A genuine, matched Nigerian document is the core of that evidence; see documents for a foreign tax credit and, for getting a TCC yourself, a TCC from abroad.

Where Pryme fits

The other half of the evidence is proof that the net amount reached you. Through our partnership with VerifyDoc.ai, any Pryme customer can generate a verifiable receipt or statement, and anyone can check it is genuine and unaltered (receipts and statements). The Nigeria library explains how to check a receipt someone sent you.

Questions people ask

How do I know my tenant actually paid the WHT on my rent?

Ask for the WHT credit note and check that the credit appears on your NRS account. If it does not, ask the tenant for the remittance evidence.

Can I verify a Nigerian tax clearance certificate online?

FIRS described an electronic system for authorised verification from 2017, and some states offer online verification. With Rev360 now handling TCCs, confirm the current route with the NRS or the issuing state.

What does a Nigerian TCC show?

Under section 72 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, the last three years' total income or profits, tax payable, tax paid and anything outstanding.

Will HMRC or the IRS accept a scanned WHT receipt?

They may ask for evidence that the tax was paid. Keep the original receipt, the payer's details and proof that the credit was recorded with the NRS.
