Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Voluntary RSA contributions from Canada: any tax relief?

Topping up a Nigerian RSA from Canada earns no Canadian deduction. What PenCom rules say about voluntary contributions and withdrawals.

The short answer

No Canadian deduction is available. The retirement deductions on a Canadian return are tied to registered plans such as the RRSP, and the CRA pages we read describe no deduction for paying into a Nigerian Retirement Savings Account. On the Nigerian side, PenCom rules let you make voluntary contributions, withdraw up to 50% of them one year after each contribution, and say income on voluntary contributions withdrawn within five years is taxable.

Many Nigerians who worked at home before moving to Canada still have a Retirement Savings Account (RSA) with a Pension Fund Administrator (PFA). Some keep paying into it from Canada, either to build a naira pot for retirement in Nigeria or to keep the account active. Before you do, it helps to know what each country gives you in return.

The Canadian side: no deduction

Canada gives tax relief on retirement saving through registered plans. The CRA’s RRSP pages (January 2026) explain that your deduction limit is built from earned income and applies to contributions to RRSPs and pooled registered pension plans. A Nigerian RSA is not one of these plans, and nothing we found on CRA pages gives a deduction for personal contributions to it. In practice, a top-up from Canada is paid out of after-tax income.

How Canada treats growth inside the RSA, and money you later take out, is a separate and less settled question. We cover it in Is a Nigerian RSA taxable in Canada? If your RSA balance is large, it is worth asking a Canadian tax professional whether it needs to appear on any foreign reporting form; the CRA’s T1135 guidance does not mention foreign pensions.

The Nigerian side: what voluntary contributions allow

Nigeria’s Pension Reform Act 2014 allows contributions above the mandatory employer and employee rates. PenCom’s 2023 FAQs say that for employees, voluntary contributions are permitted as long as total deductions do not exceed one-third of monthly emoluments, and that self-employed people and those in very small firms can join through the Micro Pension Plan.

Access rules were relaxed in 2024. According to a KPMG summary of the PenCom circular (published 24 July 2024), effective 10 June 2024:

  • Up to 50% of voluntary contributions can be withdrawn as a contingent withdrawal one year after the contribution date (it was two years).
  • Income earned on voluntary contributions is taxable if withdrawn within five years, under section 10(4) of the Act.
  • Voluntary contributions left for longer, and taken at retirement, follow the normal RSA benefit rules.

A BusinessDay explainer on pension benefits notes that Nigerians who move abroad may keep making voluntary contributions or ask their PFA to keep the account as it is. There is no special relocation cash-out rule for Nigerian citizens. Our piece on accessing your RSA after moving to Canada covers withdrawals in detail.

Who regulatesPenCom (Nigeria)CRA (Canada)

Example (illustrative)

Suppose you have $3,000 to save this year and a 30% combined marginal tax rate. Put into an RRSP, the deduction reduces your tax by about $900 (30% of $3,000). Sent to your RSA, there is no Canadian saving; the full $3,000 comes from after-tax income, and the naira value you end up with depends on the exchange rate on the day you convert. The RSA may still suit you if you plan to retire in Nigeria and want naira income there, but it is not a tax-saving choice from Canada.

Currency and timing

An RSA is a naira account. Money you send from Canada is converted once, at the rate on the day, and its value in Canadian dollars then rises or falls with the naira for as long as it stays invested. If you expect to spend your retirement in Canada, that currency exposure works against you; if you expect to live in Nigeria and spend naira, it may be exactly what you want. Decide which before choosing between the two accounts, because the tax answer from Canada is the same either way: no deduction.

Before you top up

  1. Confirm your RSA PIN and that your PFA has your current phone number and email.
  2. Ask the PFA how it accepts voluntary contributions from abroad and from which accounts.
  3. Keep a record of each contribution date: the one-year and five-year clocks run from it.
  4. Decide whether you are saving for naira retirement income or simply keeping the account alive.

Where Pryme fits

If you top up in naira, a Pryme account lets you hold naira and pay your PFA from it. When you convert Canadian dollars with Swap, the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. For naira you want to keep flexible, Savings Boxes are available on naira held in Nigeria.

Questions people ask

Can I deduct RSA contributions on my Canadian tax return?

We found no CRA provision allowing it. Canadian retirement deductions are tied to registered plans such as the RRSP.

Can I still pay into my RSA after moving to Canada?

Reports indicate PFAs let Nigerians abroad keep making voluntary contributions. Ask your PFA how it accepts payments from abroad.

When can I take out voluntary contributions?

Under PenCom’s 2024 circular, up to 50% of voluntary contributions can be withdrawn one year after the contribution date.

Is there tax if I withdraw voluntary contributions early?

Income on voluntary contributions withdrawn within five years is taxable in Nigeria under section 10(4) of the Pension Reform Act.
