Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Using a Nigerian naira card in Italy: what to expect

Paying or withdrawing in Italy with a naira debit card: the dollar limits Nigerian banks set, how the conversion works, and why cards get declined.

The short answer

Some Nigerian naira cards work in Italy, but only within an international limit your bank sets in dollars, and some do not work abroad at all. As reported in September 2026, GTBank allows $40,000 a quarter, FirstBank $10,000 a quarter on POS and web plus $1,000 a day at ATMs, Zenith $50,000 a year and Stanbic IBTC $8,000 a quarter on Mastercard, while Fidelity says individual naira cards are not permitted for international transactions. You pay in euros and your naira account is debited at the bank's rate.

For a visit to Italy, or your first weeks after arriving before an Italian account is open, a naira card can be useful. It can also fail at the till. Whether it works depends on your bank, the card type, and how much of your international allowance you have used.

International limits by bank

Nigerian banks set international spending limits on naira cards in dollars, and they have changed often as foreign-exchange supply has changed. The latest figures we found:

BankNaira card international limitSource and date
GTBank$40,000 a quarterNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
FirstBank (naira Mastercard)$10,000 a quarter POS and web; ATM $1,000 a dayNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
ZenithUp to $50,000 a yearNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
Stanbic IBTC$8,000 a quarter (Mastercard)Nairametrics, 7 Sep 2026; the bank's own FAQ still shows $100 a month on NGN debit cards
Access Bank$3,000 a month Visa Signature and Platinum; $2,000 a month Visa Classic and MastercardLegit.ng, 9 Aug 2026
FidelityIndividual naira cards not permitted for international transactionsFidelity FAQ

Where two sources disagree, as with Stanbic, ask the bank before you travel. The Nigeria library has bank-by-bank guides, for example GTBank naira card abroad and First Bank naira card limits.

How the conversion works

When you pay €50 in a shop in Bologna, the card network converts the euro amount and your bank debits naira from your account at the rate it applies. Legit.ng reported in August 2026 that UBA was applying a rate revised daily to naira card international transactions. The amount also counts against your dollar limit, so a euro purchase uses up a dollar allowance.

Pay in euros, not naira

Some Italian terminals and ATMs offer to charge you in your home currency. This is dynamic currency conversion: the merchant's or ATM bank's rate is used instead of your card network's. Asda Money's guide notes that this rate is set by the retailer or its bank and can be worse, though not always. Choosing euros keeps the conversion with your card's network and your bank.

Cash and larger payments

ATM withdrawals often have tighter caps than card payments: FirstBank's naira Mastercard, for example, allows $1,000 a day at ATMs within its quarterly limit. Read the ATM screen before confirming, decline any offer to convert into naira, and note any charge shown by the machine's owner. For large costs such as a rental deposit, Italian landlords normally expect a bank transfer (bonifico) from an account in your name, not a card payment, so a naira card is rarely the answer for setting up home.

A dollar card as a back-up

A dollar debit card linked to a Nigerian domiciliary account draws on dollars you already hold rather than on a naira allowance. Wema's help centre (in a page dated December 2021) describes a MasterCard Dollar Debit Card with daily limits of $1,000 at ATMs, $10,000 at POS and $5,000 online, a $3 card fee, $10 a year and $2 per ATM withdrawal. Paying in euros still involves a conversion from dollars, but you are no longer tied to a naira card's international limit.

Why naira cards get declined in Italy

  • The card is not enabled for international use, or your bank does not allow it for that card type.
  • You have reached the quarterly, monthly or daily international limit.
  • The channel is not allowed: some limits cover POS and web but cap or exclude ATMs.
  • Security checks: an unusual foreign transaction may need a one-time code sent to your Nigerian number, which you cannot receive if that SIM is off.
  • The naira balance is too low once converted at the bank's rate.

What to check before you rely on it

  1. Call or message your bank to confirm the card works abroad and the current limit.
  2. Ask whether ATM withdrawals are allowed and the daily cap.
  3. Make sure you can receive codes in Italy, by roaming or by email.
  4. Carry a second way to pay: a dollar card linked to a domiciliary account, or an Italian card as soon as you have one; see opening a bank account in Italy.
  5. Keep receipts; a disputed charge abroad is easier to resolve with them.

Where Pryme fits

For regular life in Italy, card limits on naira are a poor fit. With a Pryme account, money that arrives in euros stays in euros, and naira is converted only when you choose through Swap, with the rate and fee shown first. See multicurrency accounts, Swap and security.

Questions people ask

Does my Nigerian naira card work in Italy?

It depends on the bank. GTBank, FirstBank, Zenith, Stanbic IBTC and Access set international limits; Fidelity says individual naira cards cannot be used internationally.

What is the GTBank naira card limit abroad?

$40,000 a quarter, as reported by Nairametrics on 7 September 2026.

Should I pay in euros or naira at an Italian card terminal?

Choose euros. Paying in naira uses the merchant's or ATM bank's conversion rate, which can be worse.

Why was my naira card declined in Italy?

Usually the international limit was reached, the card is not enabled for foreign use, or a security code could not reach your phone.
