Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Italy

Can an Italy resident invest in Nigerian mutual funds?

Whether you can invest in Nigerian mutual funds from Italy, how fund managers onboard non-residents, how redemptions are paid and Italian reporting.

The short answer

Yes, in most cases: Nigerian mutual funds are run by SEC-registered fund managers, and a Nigerian living in Italy can usually subscribe once the manager completes its identity checks and you have a Nigerian bank account for subscriptions and redemptions. Each manager sets its own non-resident rules, so ask before applying; redemptions are paid to the account on record, and Italian tax residents must report the holding in quadro RW.

Mutual funds are a common way for Nigerians abroad to keep money working in Nigeria without picking individual bills or shares. The market is large: SEC data reported by Nairametrics put total mutual fund assets at ₦8.77 trillion in April 2026, with money market funds at ₦5.68 trillion and dollar funds (mostly Eurobonds and other dollar fixed income) at ₦1.85 trillion. For how the most popular category works, see money market funds in Nigeria.

Who can invest from Italy

There is no single rule for non-residents; each fund manager decides whom it onboards and how. In practice, managers look for three things:

  1. Identity they can verify. A Nigerian passport and BVN are the usual starting point. Non-Nigerians and Nigerians without a BVN find onboarding much harder.
  2. A Nigerian bank account in your name. Subscriptions come from it and redemptions go back to it.
  3. Know-your-customer documents. Proof of address (often a recent utility bill), source of funds or income, and for some managers certified or notarised copies.

Before applying, check the manager on the SEC's Find a Registered Operator page. Ask whether it accepts customers resident in Italy and whether it needs anything further from you, such as tax residence forms.

What you are buying

Fund typeWhat it holdsPoint to check
Money market fundTreasury bills, commercial paper, depositsExit charges for early redemption
Bond or fixed income fundFGN and corporate bondsPrice moves with yields
Dollar fundEurobonds and dollar depositsWhether you can subscribe and redeem in dollars
Equity or balanced fundNGX shares, or a mixHigher volatility

One example: a third-party listing on nairaCompare (undated) gives the FBN Money Market Fund a minimum of ₦5,000 to start and ₦1,000 after that, a management fee of 1.25% a year, an exit charge of 20% of income if you redeem within 30 days, and redemption typically within 24 to 48 hours. Confirm the figures in the fund's own documents. Yields change constantly: the ten best money market funds reported year-to-date yields between 18.59% and 21.11% as at August 2026 (Nairametrics, 17 Sep 2026), but past yields say nothing certain about future ones.

Paying in and taking money out

Naira funds are subscribed and redeemed in naira. The money comes from, and goes back to, your Nigerian account; to bring it to Italy you convert and transfer. Some apps take naira only even for dollar funds: Cowrywise's blog says it accepts naira deposits only and converts them to dollars, at a rate it does not explain on that page.

If you may want the proceeds back in euros, consider funding through a Non-Resident Nigerian Investment Account (NRNIA). Lexworth (Mondaq, 22 May 2025) explains that NRNIA naira balances are repatriable on evidence of the prior foreign inflow and related investment proceeds, while foreign-currency balances are repatriable without restriction.

Naira fund or dollar fund for a euro earner?

Your spending is in euros, so a naira fund's yield has to be judged after the exchange rate. A high naira yield can be wiped out if the naira weakens against the euro over the same period, and the reverse can also happen. Dollar funds remove the naira risk but replace it with dollar-euro risk and Nigerian credit risk, since most of their assets are Eurobonds. Neither is automatically safer. Two practical points: decide what the money is for (a future expense in Nigeria is a good reason to hold naira), and keep any emergency savings in euros in Italy. Our guide to saving in naira or euros while living in Italy works through the trade-off.

What to check first

  • The manager's SEC registration and the fund's latest factsheet.
  • Fees: management fee, any exit or early-redemption charge.
  • Redemption time and where redemptions are paid.
  • Whether units are held in your name and how you get statements online.
  • What happens to your account if your Nigerian bank account becomes dormant while you are in Italy; see keeping a Nigerian account active from Italy.

Italian reporting

Fund units held with a Nigerian manager are foreign financial assets for an Italian tax resident. They are reported in quadro RW and IVAFE generally applies at 2 per mille a year of their value, according to FiscoeTASSE (9 Jan 2024). How Italy taxes income from a foreign fund can be more complicated than for a bond or share, so take advice before you invest a large sum. Our guide to IVAFE on Nigerian accounts and investments explains the annual charge. This is information, not tax advice.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not run mutual funds. If you want naira savings without a fund, Pryme Savings Boxes hold naira with a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, with rates shown in the app. Converting between euros and naira is done with Swap, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve.

Questions people ask

Can I invest in Nigerian mutual funds while living in Italy?

Usually yes, if the fund manager accepts non-resident customers and you have a Nigerian passport or ID, a BVN and a Nigerian bank account. Ask the manager first.

How do I withdraw from a Nigerian mutual fund abroad?

Redemptions are paid to the Nigerian account on record; you then convert and transfer to Italy. An NRNIA can help if you funded from abroad.

Are Nigerian money market funds safe?

They hold short-term instruments and are SEC-regulated, but they are not deposits and values can change. Read the factsheet and check the manager on the SEC register.

Do I declare Nigerian mutual funds in Italy?

Yes, as foreign financial assets in quadro RW, with IVAFE generally due. Ask a commercialista about income tax on fund returns.
