Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Nigerian mutual fund units: how Canada taxes them

How a Canadian resident reports Nigerian mutual fund distributions and redemptions, why fund units count for T1135, and the records you need.

The short answer

For a Canadian resident, Nigerian mutual fund units are foreign investments: distributions are reported as foreign investment income in Canadian dollars, and redeeming units can give a capital gain or loss worked out in Canadian dollars at the purchase and sale dates. The CRA treats an interest in a non-resident mutual fund trust as specified foreign property for Form T1135.

Nigerian mutual funds, especially money market and dollar funds, are an easy way to keep savings working at home. They are sold through banks' asset managers and savings apps, often from a few thousand naira. For someone resident in Canada, they raise three tax questions: what to do with distributions, what happens on redemption, and whether the units count as foreign property.

What you actually own

Most Nigerian mutual funds are unit trusts registered with the SEC, with a trustee and a custodian. ARM's Money Market Fund factsheet (September 2025), for example, describes an SEC-registered unit trust with a named trustee and custodian, a 1.5% management fee on net assets, a 90-day minimum holding period and returns measured with dividends reinvested. You hold units in a trust set up in Nigeria.

Is it foreign property for T1135?

Yes. The CRA's T1135 questions and answers say an interest in a non-resident mutual fund trust is specified foreign property, and that you report the fund interest, not the fund's underlying holdings. Canadian mutual fund trusts are not specified foreign property. If the total cost of your foreign property is more than $100,000 at any time in the year, Form T1135 is due with your return; with a total under $250,000 throughout the year you can use the simplified method. See simplified or detailed T1135 for Nigerian assets.

Distributions

Income paid out by the fund is foreign investment income in the year it is paid. The CRA's line 12100 page says foreign interest and dividend income is reported in Canadian dollars, converted at the rate when it arose, without subtracting foreign tax. Two practical points:

  • Reinvested distributions are still distributions paid to you, just in extra units. Many money market funds reinvest automatically, so ask the manager for a statement showing each distribution, cashed or reinvested.
  • Character. A fund that holds mainly Treasury bills and deposits earns interest; an equity fund earns dividends and gains. Whether a distribution keeps that character for Canadian purposes is a technical question to confirm with an adviser.

If the manager deducted Nigerian tax on a distribution, keep the evidence; it may support a foreign tax credit. The Nigerian treatment of fund income for non-residents under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is not settled in the sources we checked, so ask the manager what it deducts and why.

Redemptions

Redeeming units is a disposal. The CRA's guide T4037 says that when you buy and sell identical property, such as units of the same fund, you calculate the average cost of each unit to find the adjusted cost base, and that property sold in a foreign currency is converted to Canadian dollars at the exchange rate at the time of the sale. Your cost in Canadian dollars uses the rate when you bought.

Worked example: a naira gain, a smaller Canadian gain

Example only. Prices and rates are illustrative.

StepNairaExample rateCAD
Buy 5,000,000 units at ₦2.00₦10,000,000₦1,000 per CA$1CA$10,000.00
Redeem all units at ₦2.60₦13,000,000₦1,150 per CA$1CA$11,304.35
Gain₦3,000,000 (30%)CA$1,304.35 (about 13%)

In naira the fund rose 30%. Because the naira weakened against the Canadian dollar over the period, the Canadian gain is about 13%. Had the naira fallen further, a naira profit could have become a Canadian loss. Units bought at different times need the averaging T4037 describes, which is why a record of every purchase, reinvestment and rate matters.

Dollar funds

Nigerian dollar funds are priced in US dollars, which simplifies conversion: the Bank of Canada publishes a USD rate each business day, so the default rule in Folio S5-F4-C1 applies directly. The investment is still a non-resident fund for T1135, and gains or losses are still measured in Canadian dollars, so a stronger Canadian dollar can reduce a dollar gain.

Records to keep

  1. Every contract note or statement of units bought, including reinvested units.
  2. Distribution statements showing amounts and dates.
  3. Redemption advices and the naira proceeds credited.
  4. Your exchange-rate source and the rate for each date; the Bank of Canada has no naira rate, so use a consistent source as Folio S5-F4-C1 allows.
  5. The fund's cost to you in Canadian dollars, for T1135.

Some countries have special rules for foreign funds, and Canada has its own rules for certain non-resident entities and trusts. Before investing a large sum, ask an adviser whether any apply to your holding. For other Nigerian investments, see T-bill interest and the CRA.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not offer mutual funds. Redemptions paid to a naira account can be received on a Pryme account and converted with Swap when you choose, with the rate and fee shown before you approve. For naira you want to keep saving at home, Savings Boxes are an alternative held in naira.

Questions people ask

Do I report Nigerian mutual fund income to the CRA?

Yes, if you are resident in Canada. Distributions, including reinvested ones, are foreign investment income reported in Canadian dollars.

Are Nigerian mutual funds foreign property for T1135?

Yes. The CRA says an interest in a non-resident mutual fund trust is specified foreign property, reported as the fund interest.

How do I calculate the gain when I redeem Nigerian fund units?

Use the average cost of your units in Canadian dollars, converted at purchase dates, and the proceeds converted at the sale date, as T4037 describes.

Can the naira falling create a loss on a Nigerian fund?

Yes. Because the gain is measured in Canadian dollars, a weaker naira can shrink a naira profit or turn it into a Canadian loss.
