Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian investments in a US divorce: how they are treated

A US divorce court looks at property in Nigeria too. How state rules, disclosure, valuation in naira and Nigerian land law shape the result.

The short answer

A US divorce court generally divides the marital property of the spouses before it, wherever the property is, so a Lagos flat, naira savings or shares in a Nigerian company can be counted and valued alongside US assets. Which state you live in decides the rules: nine states are community property states (IRS Publication 555, December 2024), and the rest apply their own division rules; what the court cannot do directly is change a Nigerian land register, so lawyers usually deal with Nigerian land through orders on the spouses themselves or by offsetting its value.

Your state's rules come first

Divorce is state law in the US. IRS Publication 555 lists the community property states as Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. In those states, property acquired during the marriage while domiciled there is generally treated as owned by both spouses. Publication 555 is a tax guide, but it makes the point that matters here: the law of the place where you are domiciled decides whether property is community property, and money earned while domiciled in a non-community state is separate for that purpose.

Other states divide marital property under their own statutes, usually by what the court considers fair in the circumstances rather than automatically half each. Either way, the location of the asset in Nigeria does not take it out of the picture.

What usually counts

Nigerian assetHow it is often approachedPoints to raise with your lawyer
House or land bought during the marriageUsually marital property, valued and divided or offsetWhose name is on the title, and who paid
Land bought before the marriageOften separate, but growth in value or marital money spent on it can be arguedDates and records of payments
Inherited family landOften separate; may not be owned by either spouse personallyWhether title is in the family, not the individual
Naira bank accounts, Treasury bills, fundsCounted and valued in dollarsStatements at the relevant dates
Shares in a Nigerian companyValued as part of the estateCompany accounts and share register
Pension (RSA) in NigeriaCan be counted like a retirement accountPFA statement

Disclosure: Nigerian assets are not invisible

Divorce courts require each spouse to disclose their assets, and the duty does not stop at the US border. Hiding a Nigerian account or property is a serious risk: it can damage your credibility with the court and lead to the case being reopened if found later. Your own US tax filings may already show these assets. The IRS requires an FBAR where foreign accounts total more than $10,000 at any time in a year, and Form 8938 covers foreign stock held outside an account above the thresholds (IRS comparison chart, September 2026). A spouse's lawyer can ask for those filings.

Valuing a naira asset

Nigerian property is usually valued in naira by a Nigerian valuer and then converted into dollars. The exchange rate and the date used can move the figure a lot.

Example only. A Lekki flat valued at ₦150,000,000 is worth about $103,448 at ₦1,450 to the dollar and $93,750 at ₦1,600, a difference of about $9,698 from the rate alone. The parties or the court have to agree a valuation date and a rate source. A lawyer may also argue about whether the official or a market rate is fairer, and about costs of selling and bringing money out of Nigeria.

Dividing what the court cannot reach directly

A US court cannot itself register a transfer at the Lagos Land Registry. Lawyers commonly use one of these approaches:

  1. Offset. One spouse keeps the Nigerian property; the other takes US assets of equal value.
  2. Order to transfer. The court orders the spouse who holds title to sign the Nigerian transfer documents. Under the Land Use Act, s.22, the holder of a statutory right of occupancy cannot assign it without the Governor's consent, so a transfer takes Nigerian paperwork and time.
  3. Order to sell. The property is sold and the proceeds split, which brings in Nigerian sale costs and the rate when money is converted.
  4. Recognition in Nigeria. If a spouse will not cooperate, the other may need Nigerian proceedings to rely on the US order. See is a foreign divorce recognised in Nigeria.

What to gather early

  • Title documents for each Nigerian property (C of O, deed of assignment, governor's consent, survey plan) and who holds them.
  • Payment records showing who funded each purchase or building stage, and from which account.
  • Statements for naira and dollar accounts in Nigeria at the date of separation.
  • Share certificates, CSCS statements and company accounts.
  • Your FBAR and Form 8938 copies for recent years.
  • Any family arrangements: land held for siblings, money sent to parents, informal loans.

For records of Nigerian property, see Nigerian property and the IRS. This article is information, not legal advice; speak to a family lawyer in your state and, for land, a Nigerian property lawyer.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not advise on divorce. If you need clear records of naira and dollar balances on given dates, a Pryme account lets you generate a verifiable statement through VerifyDoc.ai that a lawyer or court can check is genuine and unaltered.

Questions people ask

Can a US divorce court divide property in Nigeria?

It can count and value it as part of the marital estate and make orders against the spouses, but it cannot itself change a Nigerian land register. Offsets and orders to transfer or sell are common.

Is Nigerian land I bought before marriage safe in a US divorce?

It is often treated as separate, but marital money spent on it or growth in value may be argued. The rules depend on your state.

Do I have to disclose my Nigerian bank account in a US divorce?

Yes. Disclosure covers assets abroad, and your FBAR or Form 8938 filings may already show them.

Which exchange rate is used to value Nigerian property?

The parties or court agree a date and rate source. The choice can change the dollar value considerably.
