Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Nigerian import prohibition list: what US exporters must avoid

The goods Nigeria bans or restricts at import, from frozen chicken and used clothing to old cars, and how a US exporter checks a product.

The short answer

Nigeria's import prohibition list bans or restricts goods including poultry, pork, beef and eggs, refined vegetable oil, retail-pack juice, soft drinks and beer, retail soaps and detergents, most footwear and bags, used tyres, used fridges and compressors, and used vehicles over the age limit. Some goods, such as second-hand clothing and counterfeit goods, are on an absolute list. Check your product's tariff line with Nigeria Customs before you take an order.

Why this list matters to US sellers

Nigeria uses import bans to protect local industries, and the list covers goods many US-based Nigerians would otherwise think of sending: frozen chicken, used clothes, toilet paper and boxed juice. Goods on the list cannot be cleared at Nigerian ports. If a buyer asks you to ship something on the list, the risk of seizure sits with them at Lagos, but the cost of a lost order, return freight or a dispute lands with you.

The Nigeria Customs Service publishes the list on its website, but its import list page did not display content when we checked in October 2026. The clearest published summary we found is the US International Trade Administration's Nigeria country guide (published 6 June 2023, changed 10 April 2025), which is the basis of the lists below. Treat it as a starting point and confirm with Customs or a licensed agent.

Goods on the import prohibition list

Food and drink

  • Poultry, pork, beef and eggs.
  • Refined vegetable oil.
  • Sugar in retail packs and flavoured sugar.
  • Spaghetti and noodles.
  • Fruit juice in retail packs.
  • Bottled water, soft drinks, beer and stout.
  • Tomato paste in retail packs.
  • Cocoa butter.

Consumer and industrial goods

  • Soaps and detergents in retail packs.
  • Bagged cement.
  • Toilet paper, carpets and ballpoint pens.
  • Most footwear, bags and suitcases (with exceptions).
  • Glass bottles over 150ml.
  • Recharge cards.
  • Listed pharmaceuticals, such as certain paracetamol formulations, and NPK 15-15-15 fertiliser.
  • Used and retreaded tyres, except some large truck tyres.
  • Used compressors, fridges and freezers.
  • Used motor vehicles above the age limit (the ITA says 15 years from the year of manufacture; other sources say 12, so confirm with Customs).

The absolute prohibition list

A separate absolute list covers goods that cannot be imported under any circumstances. The ITA guide includes the items below; it separately lists textiles bearing Koranic inscriptions as prohibited.

  • Second-hand clothing.
  • Counterfeit goods.
  • Toxic waste.
  • Cowries.
  • Spirits above 48.5% alcohol by volume, with exceptions.

Second-hand clothing deserves a specific warning, because used clothes are one of the most common things Nigerians in the US ship in barrels. Sending them for sale is not allowed. Personal effects for a returning resident are a different matter; see shipping household goods from Houston.

How to check a product

  1. Find the product's HS (tariff) code, with your freight forwarder or customs broker if needed.
  2. Search the code on the Nigeria Customs CET lookup portal, which gives the tariff line and duty.
  3. Ask the Nigerian buyer to confirm with their bank that a Form M can be opened for that line.
  4. For food, drugs, cosmetics or chemicals, ask whether NAFDAC will register the product; NAFDAC does not accept applications for items on the prohibition list.
  5. Get the confirmation in writing before you accept payment.

Worked example (illustration only)

Example: a Dallas wholesaler is asked for a container of mixed groceries: rice, cereal, retail cartons of juice and bottled water. Rice is not on the ITA's prohibition list but carries a high effective duty (the ITA reports 70%). The juice cartons and bottled water are on the list. The wholesaler removes those lines, the buyer confirms Form M for the rest, and the cereal and rice ship.

Lists change

The list is set by the Federal Government and changes through fiscal policy measures and directives. The ITA page notes that the list is longer than its summary and should be confirmed with the Nigeria Customs Service. Re-check before each new product line, not once. For age-limited vehicles, see exporting used cars to Nigeria; for regulated food, see NAFDAC registration for US foodstuffs.

Prohibited, restricted and high-duty goods

It helps to separate three situations. Prohibited goods cannot be imported for sale. Absolute prohibitions cannot be imported at all. Other goods are allowed but face high duty or extra conditions, such as NAFDAC registration, SONCAP certification or an import permit for refurbished items. A product can be legal to import but uneconomic once duty is added, so check both the list and the CET rate.

The ITA guide also listed some goods, including textiles and soap and cosmetics, as ineligible for official foreign exchange as at its date. That is not an import ban, but it affects how your buyer can pay. Ask the buyer's bank whether any FX restriction applies to your product today, and agree in writing what happens if the buyer cannot pay through official channels.

Where Pryme fits

Once you know a product can go, a Pryme Business Account opened from the US holds USD and NGN with local details, so a Nigerian buyer can pay in either currency. Invoicing lets you issue an invoice that matches the tariff lines you agreed, which helps the buyer's Form M go through.

Questions people ask

Can I export frozen chicken to Nigeria?

No. Poultry, pork, beef and eggs are on Nigeria's import prohibition list.

Is used clothing banned in Nigeria?

Yes. Second-hand clothing is on the absolute import prohibition list.

Where is the official Nigerian prohibition list?

On the Nigeria Customs Service website. If it does not load, the US ITA's Nigeria country guide summarises it; confirm with Customs or a licensed agent.

Can I ship bottled water or soft drinks to Nigeria?

Not for sale. Bottled water, soft drinks, beer and stout are on the prohibition list.
