Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Paying Nigerian suppliers on delivery: escrow options

How trade escrow works when buying from Nigeria: funding, inspection periods, release, licensed providers, fake escrow sites and alternatives.

The short answer

In a trade escrow, a licensed third party holds the buyer's payment, tells the supplier it is funded, and releases it once the buyer confirms delivery or an inspection period ends. It lets a Nigerian supplier ship knowing the money exists and lets a US buyer pay only for what arrives; check that the provider is licensed (for example on the California DFPI register) because fake escrow sites are a known scam.

The problem escrow solves

A supplier in Lagos or Kano wants payment before shipping; a US buyer wants to see the goods first. Escrow puts a neutral holder in the middle. Neither side has to trust the other with the money, only the escrow provider and the written terms.

How a trade escrow runs

  1. Terms agreed. Buyer and supplier agree the goods, price, currency, delivery terms, inspection period and who pays the escrow fee.
  2. Buyer funds. The buyer pays the escrow provider, not the supplier.
  3. Supplier is told. The provider confirms to the supplier that funds are held.
  4. Supplier ships. Tracking and shipping documents go into the escrow record.
  5. Inspection period. The buyer receives and checks the goods within the agreed days.
  6. Release or dispute. The buyer approves and the provider pays the supplier; or the buyer rejects within the period and the dispute process in the terms applies.

For cross-border goods the inspection period has to allow for customs and inland delivery. If the clock starts at shipment rather than receipt, the buyer may lose the right to reject before the container is even released.

Check the provider is real

Escrow is a regulated activity in several US states. California's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) has issued alerts about fake escrow websites. In one, an entity posing as Edmunds.com offered escrow through look-alike domains and quoted California licence number 963-1867, which belongs to Escrow.com (Internet Escrow Services Inc.). The DFPI advises consumers to verify a provider's licence on its website or by phone before using it.

  • Type the provider's address yourself; do not follow a link sent by the other party.
  • Check the licence number against the regulator's register and the provider's own site.
  • Be wary when the supplier insists on a particular escrow service you have never heard of.
  • Never pay escrow fees or deposits by gift card or to a personal account.

Writing the escrow terms

An escrow is only as useful as the description of what counts as delivery. Disputes are decided on the terms, so write them as if a stranger will have to judge them:

Goods
Product names, quantities, specifications or approved sample references, and packaging.
Delivery
The Incoterm and place, and the document that proves delivery (bill of lading, courier proof, signed receipt).
Inspection
Number of days, starting on receipt; what the buyer must show to reject (photos, inspector's report).
Partial delivery
Whether part payment is released for part delivery.
Return costs
Who pays to return rejected goods across borders, which can exceed their value.

Return shipping is the term buyers forget. If returning goods to Nigeria is not realistic, agree in advance that a rejection leads to a price reduction or replacement rather than a return.

Fees and limits

Escrow providers charge a fee, often a percentage of the transaction with minimums, and some restrict which countries, currencies or goods they support. Confirm on the provider's own pages that payouts to Nigeria and the goods category are supported, and who pays any bank or conversion charges on the supplier's side.

Alternatives to escrow

MethodHow payment is protectedFits
Deposit plus balance on inspectionBalance released when an independent inspector passes the goods in NigeriaRepeat suppliers, smaller orders
Letter of creditBanks pay against compliant shipping documentsLarger orders; see letters of credit
Milestone paymentsEach stage (materials, production, packing) paid on evidenceMade-to-order goods
Trade escrowThird party holds funds until delivery approvedNew suppliers, one-off orders

Inspection-linked payment is often the most practical for Nigerian suppliers who do not use escrow; see quality inspection before shipping.

The supplier's side in Nigeria

Export proceeds come into Nigeria through the banking system. The Nigeria Customs valuation guide lists NEPC registration for exporters and Nigeria Single Window registration with an authorised dealer bank. A supplier who has these in place can usually receive an escrow payout more smoothly; ask early. Nigerian businesses holding client money in Nigeria can read client accounts and escrow for Nigerian businesses.

What to check first

  • Is the escrow provider licensed where it says it is?
  • Does the inspection period start on receipt, and is it long enough for customs?
  • Are the goods described precisely enough to decide a dispute?
  • Who pays the escrow fee and any bank charges?
  • Does the supplier have its export registrations?

For a wider view see safer ways to pay a Nigerian supplier.

Where Pryme fits

Where you pay without escrow, a Pryme Business Account lets you pay deposit and balance to the supplier's Nigerian account in naira, with the rate and fee shown before you approve and a verifiable receipt for each payment.

Questions people ask

Is escrow safe for paying Nigerian suppliers?

It can be, if the provider is licensed and the terms fit cross-border delivery. Verify the licence yourself; fake escrow sites exist.

How long should the inspection period be?

Long enough to clear customs and inspect after receipt. Make sure it starts on delivery, not shipment.

Who pays the escrow fee?

Whoever the terms say. Agree it before funding.

What if my Nigerian supplier will not use escrow?

Common alternatives are a deposit with the balance on inspection, milestone payments or a letter of credit.
