Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

United States

Can Nigerian immigrants get SNAP benefits?

After the 2025 federal law change, SNAP is limited to green card holders (usually after five years) and a few other groups. The rules and exceptions.

The short answer

Since the One Big Beautiful Bill Act took effect on 4 July 2025, SNAP is open to non-citizens only if they are lawful permanent residents, Cuban or Haitian entrants, or citizens of the Compact of Free Association states, according to USDA guidance of 31 October 2025. Most green card holders still face a five-year wait, with exceptions such as children under 18 and people with 40 qualifying quarters of work. Visa holders, refugees and asylees who are not permanent residents are no longer eligible.

What changed in 2025

SNAP, the federal food assistance programme, has always limited which non-citizens can take part. Section 10108 of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (Public Law 119-21) narrowed that list further. The USDA's Food and Nutrition Service memo of 31 October 2025 says the change was "effective upon enactment, July 4, 2025."

Under the memo, the non-citizens who can still qualify are:

  • Lawful permanent residents (green card holders), usually after a waiting period.
  • Cuban and Haitian entrants, eligible immediately.
  • Citizens of the Compact of Free Association states, eligible immediately.

Groups that were eligible before but are now listed as not eligible include refugees, people granted asylum, parolees, people granted withholding of deportation, battered non-citizens and trafficking victims. Several of these groups remain eligible if they have since become permanent residents.

What this means for Nigerians

Your situationSNAP position under the memo
Green card holder, 5+ yearsMay qualify if the household meets income and other rules
Green card holder, under 5 yearsNot yet, unless an exception applies (see below)
Green card holder under 18No waiting period
H-1B, F-1, B-2 or other visa holderNot in an eligible group
Asylee or refugee without a green cardNo longer eligible
Naturalised US citizenEligible on the same terms as other citizens

The five-year wait and its exceptions

The memo says non-citizens "continue to be subject to a 5-year waiting period" unless an exemption applies. Green card holders can qualify without the wait if they:

  • are under 18;
  • have 40 qualifying quarters of work;
  • are blind or disabled;
  • were lawfully residing in the US and aged 65 or over on 22 August 1996; or
  • have a US military connection.

The 40-quarter route matters for people who worked in the US for years on visas before getting a green card. Ask the state agency how it counts your work history, and keep payslips and W-2 forms.

Mixed-status households

Many Nigerian families include members with different statuses: US-born children, a parent on a green card, another waiting for one. The memo says non-citizens who no longer fall into an eligible group "must be removed from the household" when the state reviews the case. Eligible members, such as US-citizen children, are assessed on their own eligibility by the state agency, which also sets how the household's income is counted. For current recipients, states apply the new rules at recertification, and the memo says households are not liable for benefits received after the change took effect.

Worked example

Example only. Funmi has had her green card for three years. Her husband is on an H-1B visa, and their two children were born in Houston. Under the memo, Funmi is still in her waiting period unless an exemption applies (for example, if she can show 40 qualifying quarters of work); her husband is not in an eligible group; the children are US citizens. If the family applies, the state agency assesses the children's eligibility and decides how the parents' income is counted. The parents' own ineligibility does not, on the memo's wording, make the children ineligible.

Common misunderstandings

  • "I had SNAP last year, so I still qualify." Not necessarily. States apply the new rules at your next recertification, so a household that qualified before July 2025 may lose a member's eligibility at review.
  • "Refugee status still counts." Under the memo it no longer does on its own. A former refugee who has become a permanent resident is assessed as a permanent resident.
  • "The five-year clock starts when I arrived." The waiting period is tied to qualified status, which for most Nigerians means the date on the green card. Ask the state agency which date it uses in your case.
  • "Applying for my children will hurt my own application." This is a separate question about public charge, covered in the next section; get advice for your situation rather than assuming either way.

SNAP and a future green card

If someone in your household plans to apply for a green card, SNAP use now needs thought. A Department of Homeland Security rule effective 18 September 2026 allows officers to consider means-tested benefits, and SNAP is named among them; the rule is being challenged in court. Read does using benefits affect a green card application? before applying, and take advice from an immigration attorney or accredited representative.

How to check and apply

  1. Find your state's SNAP agency; each state runs the application and sets local procedures.
  2. Have your immigration documents, Social Security numbers, proof of income and household details ready.
  3. Ask the agency to assess each household member separately if statuses differ.
  4. Keep copies of every notice, and ask for a written explanation of any refusal.

Where Pryme fits

SNAP is a US government programme and has no connection to Pryme. If money is tight while you wait to qualify, a household budget helps; see building an emergency fund and the first 90 days money checklist. Pryme's Personal Assistant can help track bills and family support, preparing payments only for you to approve.

Questions people ask

Can green card holders get SNAP?

Yes, but usually after a five-year waiting period. Children under 18, people with 40 qualifying work quarters, and some others are exempt from the wait.

Can H-1B or F-1 visa holders get food stamps?

No. Under USDA guidance after the 2025 law, only permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants and COFA citizens among non-citizens can qualify.

Can my US-born children get SNAP if I am not eligible?

Eligible members, such as US-citizen children, are assessed by the state agency on their own eligibility; ineligible members are removed from the household count.

Are asylees still eligible for SNAP?

Not unless they have become permanent residents. The USDA memo lists people granted asylum as no longer eligible.
