Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Opening an African hair salon in the UK: setup costs

What an African hair salon costs to open in the UK: premises, fit-out, licences, rates and insurance, with a labelled example budget.

The short answer

The biggest costs in opening an African hair salon are premises (rent, deposit and fit-out), equipment and opening stock, and the first months of staff and running costs before income builds. Licensing depends on what you offer: in London boroughs, nails, piercing, massage and light treatments generally need a yearly special treatment licence, while the borough page we read does not list hairdressing. In England, small business rate relief can cut rates to zero if the salon is your only property with a rateable value of £12,000 or less.

Where the money goes

Braiding, weaving, locs, natural hair care, relaxers and wig fitting each need different equipment and space. A salon that also offers nails, lashes or piercing takes on licensing and extra insurance. Plan the service list first; the costs follow from it.

  • Premises: rent, deposit, legal fees on the lease, any premium for an existing salon.
  • Fit-out: plumbing for basins, electrics for dryers and steamers, ventilation for chemical treatments, flooring, lighting, reception.
  • Equipment: styling chairs, backwash units, hooded dryers, steamers, trolleys, sterilisers.
  • Stock: braiding hair, extensions, relaxers, treatments, retail products.
  • Compliance: licences if needed, insurance, fire safety equipment, waste contract.
  • Working capital: rent, wages and bills for the first months while bookings build.

Licences: check what your services need

There is no single national hair salon licence. In London, councils license "special treatment" premises. Wandsworth Council's page lists tattooing, piercing, massage, electrolysis, nail treatments, light treatments (sunbeds, lasers) and sauna or spa use as licensable, says the list is not exhaustive, and does not mention hairdressing. Its premises licences last one year and must be renewed before expiry; a fee applies to new applications, renewals, variations and transfers. Licences can transfer to a new holder but not to new premises.

So a braids-only salon in that borough may need no special treatment licence, but adding nails or ear piercing would. Outside London, councils use different rules, especially for piercing. Ask your council's licensing team before you sign the lease, with your full service list.

Business rates

GOV.UK says small business rate relief in England gives 100% relief if your only property has a rateable value of £12,000 or less, tapering between £12,001 and £15,000 (for example, about 50% at £13,500). For 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 the small business multiplier is 43.2p for properties under £51,000 rateable value. Apply through your council. See business rates relief for a small shop.

Staff, chairs and insurance

Many African salons rent chairs to self-employed stylists rather than employing them. The two models carry different duties; whether someone is really self-employed depends on the working arrangement, not the label. If you employ anyone outside close family, GOV.UK requires employers' liability insurance of at least £5 million from day one, with a £2,500 fine for each day uninsured. Public liability and treatment risks cover (for reactions to relaxers or adhesives) are commonly added.

Running costs after opening

Setup is a one-off; running costs decide whether the salon survives. Budget monthly for rent, any business rates after relief, electricity (dryers and steamers draw heavily), water, products, card and booking fees, insurance, waste collection, cleaning and, if you employ staff, wages, employer National Insurance and pension contributions. Track bookings per chair per week from the start, since an empty chair costs the same rent as a full one.

Choosing the premises

Footfall matters less for a salon than for a shop, because most clients book. Parking or public transport, enough space for long braiding sessions, a water supply that can handle several basins, and a landlord who allows salon use and works are more important. Check whether the building's ventilation is suitable for relaxers and other chemical treatments before you sign.

Worked example: an illustrative budget

Example only. These figures are invented to show how a budget fits together, not quotes or market prices. Get real quotes for your area.

ItemExample amount
Rent deposit (3 months at £1,500)£4,500
Legal fees on lease£1,200
Fit-out (plumbing, electrics, flooring, lighting)£12,000
Four styling chairs, two backwash units, two dryers£5,500
Opening stock (hair, products)£3,000
Insurance, first year£900
Signage, booking system, website£1,400
Working capital (three months of costs)£9,000
Total£37,500

In this example the salon's rateable value is £11,000 and it is the owner's only property, so under the GOV.UK rules it would qualify for 100% small business rate relief. A £25,000 Start Up Loan plus £12,500 of savings would cover the total.

Change the example to match your own quotes: a smaller unit, second-hand chairs or a phased fit-out can bring the total down a long way, while a premium for taking over an existing salon can push it up.

What to check first

  1. List every service you will offer, and ask the council which need a licence.
  2. Check the lease allows salon use, opening hours and the plumbing and ventilation works.
  3. Check the rateable value and apply for relief.
  4. Decide employ or rent chairs, and take advice on the difference.
  5. Arrange insurance before the first client.

Where Pryme fits

Salons that buy hair or products from suppliers in Nigeria can hold naira and pounds in a Pryme Business Account; the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve a payment. The Finance agent can prepare a monthly cost summary for you to review. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's services run through regulated partners.

Questions people ask

Do I need a licence to open a hair salon in London?

The Wandsworth page we read lists nails, piercing, massage and light treatments as licensable but does not list hairdressing. Ask your own council with your full service list.

How much does it cost to open an African hair salon?

It depends on premises and fit-out. Our labelled example totals £37,500, but get local quotes.

Can a salon get business rates relief?

In England, 100% small business rate relief applies if your only property has a rateable value of £12,000 or less, tapering to £15,000.

Do I need insurance if I only rent chairs?

Employers' liability applies if you employ staff; chair renters are not employees, but public liability and treatment cover are still worth having.
