Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Running a Nigerian domiciliary account from South Africa

How to fund, use and keep a Nigerian domiciliary account active from South Africa under the CBN FX Manual 2026, including BVN and KYC updates.

The short answer

Fund a Nigerian dom account from South Africa by SWIFT in dollars, or through cash deposits made in Nigeria. Under the CBN FX Manual 2026 you can transfer up to $10,000 a day without Form A from a self-funded account. Keep it active with occasional transactions, a current BVN record, address and passport, and a working way to receive bank codes.

What a dom account is for when you live in South Africa

A Nigerian domiciliary account holds foreign currency, usually US dollars, inside a Nigerian bank. For a Nigerian in Johannesburg or Cape Town, it is often the account that rent from a Lagos flat, money from family, or a dollar savings pot lands in. Since the CBN Foreign Exchange Manual 2026, it has also become easier to use: TheNigeriaLawyer (2 June 2026) reports that ordinary dom holders have "unfettered and unrestricted access" to their balances, and Mondaq's summary says Form A is not required for outward remittances from self-funded dom accounts.

Funding it from South Africa

  • From your South African bank. Send dollars by SWIFT to the dom account. You need the Nigerian bank's SWIFT code, its correspondent bank details for USD (ask the bank for its current instructions) and your account number and name. Each transfer from South Africa needs a Balance of Payments reason and counts against your allowance where one applies; see the single discretionary allowance and limits for foreign nationals.
  • From inside Nigeria. Cash deposits are allowed: TheNigeriaLawyer reports cash deposits up to $10,000 a day, usable by transfer. A relative can deposit on your behalf if the bank allows third-party deposits.
  • Not from naira. You cannot simply move naira into a dom account at a good rate; buying foreign currency goes through the official market at the bank's rate.

Using it from abroad

What you wantWhat the rules say (as reported, June 2026)
Send dollars abroadTelegraphic transfers up to $10,000 a day, without Form A for self-funded accounts
Explain where the money came fromNo source-of-funds disclosure required to open or fund a dom account (TheCable)
Withdraw cashNo withdrawal limit reported for ordinary dom accounts; cash withdrawals from export proceeds accounts prohibited
Pay someone in NigeriaTransfer to their dom account, or convert to naira and transfer

Most actions now happen in the bank's app or internet banking. Check which transactions the app allows on a dom account: some banks let you send SWIFT payments online, others still want a signed instruction by email or at a branch.

Keeping it active and compliant

Dormancy and KYC are the two reasons dom accounts get blocked for people abroad.

  1. Move money at least occasionally. Banks classify accounts with no customer-initiated transactions as inactive or dormant after a period they set; ask your bank for its rule.
  2. Keep your BVN details current. Your bank relies on your BVN record. If your phone number has changed, note that from 1 May 2026 each BVN holder can change the linked number only once, as reported by Union Bank and the Guardian; see updating BVN details from South Africa.
  3. Update your address and ID. Tell the bank you now live in South Africa and give a current passport. Banks may ask for proof of foreign address.
  4. Keep a working way to receive codes. If your bank sends one-time codes only to a Nigerian number, keep that SIM active or ask for an alternative such as a hardware token.

Ordinary dom account or non-resident account?

The CBN also runs a framework for Non-Resident Nigerian Ordinary Accounts (NRNOA) and Investment Accounts (NRNIA), effective 1 January 2025. Mondaq (22 May 2025) says both hold foreign currency and naira, foreign currency balances are repatriable "without restrictions", and documents include proof of Nigerian status, a utility bill and proof of income. If your bank offers it, an NRNOA can fit someone who lives abroad better than an ordinary dom account. See our Nigeria library on the NRBVN.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the only phone number on the account lapse, then being unable to receive codes to approve a transfer.
  • Using an old Nigerian address after moving, so bank letters go unanswered.
  • Sending rand and expecting it to arrive as dollars without a conversion cost. Your SA bank converts before sending, at its rate.
  • Asking a relative to operate the account with your login. That breaks the bank's terms; ask about a mandate or power of attorney instead.
  • Mixing business receipts into a personal dom account, which makes source-of-funds questions harder to answer later.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account, opened from South Africa, holds USD, GBP, EUR and NGN with local details for each, and you approve every payment in the app with an authenticator rather than SMS codes. See multicurrency accounts and security.

Questions people ask

Can I operate my Nigerian dom account from South Africa?

Yes, mostly through the bank's app or internet banking. Some banks still need signed instructions for SWIFT transfers.

How much can I transfer from a domiciliary account?

Up to $10,000 a day by telegraphic transfer under the CBN FX Manual 2026, as reported by TheCable.

Why was my dom account blocked while abroad?

Commonly dormancy or outdated KYC. Ask the bank which documents it needs to reactivate it.

Can I send rand into a Nigerian dom account?

Send dollars, pounds or euros; your SA bank converts rand before sending.
