Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Using a Nigerian debit card in South Africa: limits and fees

What Nigerian banks allowed on naira cards abroad as at September 2026, how a rand purchase is converted, and the charges to look for.

The short answer

It depends entirely on the bank. As at September 2026, Nairametrics reported naira card limits for use abroad of $40,000 a quarter at GTBank, $10,000 a quarter plus $1,000 a day at ATMs at FirstBank, and $50,000 a year at Zenith, while Fidelity says individual naira cards cannot be used internationally at all. A rand purchase is converted to dollars by the card scheme and then to naira at your bank's rate, so check your bank's rate and charges before you rely on the card in South Africa.

Limits by bank, as reported in 2026

Nigerian banks cut naira card spending abroad sharply during the dollar shortage and have been raising limits again through 2026. The figures below are what each source said on its date; they change often, so confirm in your bank's app or with customer care before you travel.

BankNaira card limit for use abroadSource and date
GTBank$40,000 per quarterCustomer email reported by Business Post, 12 Aug 2026; Nairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
FirstBank$10,000 per quarter (POS and web), ATM $1,000 per dayNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
ZenithUp to $50,000 per yearNairametrics, 7 Sep 2026
AccessVisa Signature and Platinum up to $3,000 per month; Visa Classic and Mastercard $2,000 per monthLegit.ng, 9 Aug 2026
Stanbic IBTC$8,000 per quarter on Mastercard (Nairametrics, Sep 2026); its own cards FAQ says naira debit cards have $100 per month across POS, web and ATMThe two conflict; ask the bank
Fidelity"Individual Naira Cards are not permitted for international transactions across all channels"Fidelity Bank FAQs
UBANo naira card monthly cap found; Legit.ng says UBA applies a daily-revised rate to international naira card transactionsLegit.ng, 9 Aug 2026

Some limits are shared across channels (point of sale, online and ATM); others split them. Stanbic's FAQ, for example, says the $100 is shared across all three. If your bank does not publish a split, assume an ATM withdrawal and a shop payment come out of the same allowance.

How a purchase in rand becomes naira

  1. You pay R1,000 at a till in Johannesburg.
  2. The card network converts rand to dollars at its own rate.
  3. Your Nigerian bank debits your naira account at its dollar rate for card transactions, which may differ from the rate you see quoted for transfers.
  4. Any foreign transaction charge the bank applies is added, and an ATM owner in South Africa may charge for a withdrawal.

Example only: R1,000 converts to $55 at the network rate; your bank charges ₦1,600 per dollar on card transactions, so ₦88,000 leaves your account before any fee. If the bank's card rate were ₦1,550, the same purchase would cost ₦85,250. The difference between those two figures, ₦2,750 on one purchase, is why the bank's rate matters as much as the limit.

Charges to look out for

  • The bank's card exchange rate. Check it in the app or on your statement after the first purchase.
  • Foreign transaction or international usage fees, where the bank applies them. They are not always on the bank's tariff page.
  • ATM owner fees in South Africa. Fidelity's FAQ, for its dollar card, mentions ATM owner charges on top of its own 2% (dollar transactions) or 3% (conversion to other currencies).
  • Paying in naira at the till or ATM. If the terminal offers to charge you in naira rather than rand, that is dynamic currency conversion and the terminal's rate applies. Choosing rand lets your bank and the card network do the conversion.

Before you travel or move

  • Ask your bank for the current limit and whether your card type is enabled for international use; some banks require you to activate it.
  • Keep the card's phone number and email alerts working; banks often send a one-time code for international online payments.
  • Do not rely on a naira card as your only money in South Africa. Limits can be cut with little notice, as they were during the dollar shortage.
  • If you are moving rather than visiting, open a South African account. See opening an SA account with a Nigerian passport.

Alternatives to a naira card

  • A dollar card from your Nigerian bank, funded from a domiciliary account. It avoids naira conversion but has its own limits and fees. See how Nigerian dollar cards work.
  • Sending money to your SA account and paying in rand. For larger sums this is often clearer than many card payments. See receiving naira from Nigeria into an SA account.
  • A virtual card for online payments, where your app offers one.

If a card payment fails or is charged twice

  1. Check the Nigerian app first: a declined payment abroad is often the international limit or a channel that is switched off, not a problem with the shop.
  2. If the amount was debited but the shop says it failed, keep the till slip and the time. Reversals of failed card payments come back through the card network and can take days.
  3. If you were charged twice, raise a dispute with your Nigerian bank, not the South African shop, and quote the date, amount in rand and merchant name from your statement.
  4. If your card is lost or stolen in South Africa, block it in the app straight away and ask the bank how a replacement can reach you abroad; see replacing a Nigerian card abroad.

Where Pryme fits

A Pryme account holds naira, dollars, pounds and euros with account details for each, so you can keep spending money in dollars rather than converting naira at a card rate you only see afterwards. Converting between balances uses Swap, where the rate and fee are shown before you approve. Pryme protects sign-in with an authenticator app and a transaction PIN rather than SMS codes; see security.

Questions people ask

Can I use my Nigerian naira card in South Africa?

Only if your bank allows international use on that card. GTBank, FirstBank, Zenith and Access published limits in 2026; Fidelity says individual naira cards cannot be used internationally.

What is the GTBank naira card limit abroad?

$40,000 per quarter, according to a GTBank customer email reported in August 2026. Check the app for the current figure.

Why was my naira card charged more than the rand price?

Your bank converts the dollar amount at its own card rate and may add a fee. An ATM owner in SA may also charge.

Should I pay in naira or rand at a South African till?

Choose rand. Paying in naira lets the terminal set the exchange rate.
