Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian commercial paper: can investors abroad buy it?

How Nigerian commercial paper works, who is allowed to buy it, the routes for Nigerians abroad, how the discount pays you and the risk you carry.

The short answer

Yes, in principle: a 2022 Pavestones Legal analysis lists resident and non-resident Nigerian individuals among eligible investors in commercial paper (CP), which must be registered and quoted on FMDQ. In practice you buy through an FMDQ dealing member, usually a bank or investment firm, which sets its own minimum and may ask you to sign a declaration that you are a knowledgeable investor. CP is unsecured short-term company debt of up to 270 days, so your return depends entirely on the issuer paying on time.

Commercial paper is how Nigerian companies borrow for weeks or months from investors rather than banks. It often pays more than Treasury bills, which is why it appears in conversations about putting naira to work. For someone abroad the questions are: am I allowed to buy it, how do I get access, and what happens if the company cannot pay?

What commercial paper is

A CP is a promise by a company to pay a fixed naira sum on a set date. It is usually sold at a discount: you pay less than the face value now and receive the full face value at maturity. The difference is your return.

The rules come from the CBN's Guidelines on Bankers' Acceptances and Commercial Paper (2019) and FMDQ's CP Registration and Quotation Rules (2019), summarised by Pavestones Legal in January 2022 and Brooks & Knights in March 2020:

  • tenor between 15 and 270 days;
  • minimum issue size of ₦100 million (the size of the whole programme, not what each investor must put in);
  • a credit rating from an SEC-registered agency, with BBB- cited as the minimum;
  • unsecured, though an issue may carry a bank guarantee;
  • registered with a licensed depository and quoted on FMDQ. A CBN circular of July 2016 says banks may deal only in CP registered on an authorised exchange.

Who may buy it

FMDQ's CP page describes the market as open to qualified institutional investors and eligible individual investors, described as "knowledgeable and capitalised". The Brooks & Knights summary says eligible investors who are not institutions sign a declaration. Pavestones lists resident and non-resident Nigerian individuals, banks, companies and foreign institutional investors among investors.

So a Nigerian living abroad is not excluded by the rules. What decides access is whether a dealing member will onboard you, what minimum it sets and whether it accepts your documents. Per-investor minimums are set by the arranger or dealer; we found no published standard figure.

Routes for investors abroad

  1. Through your Nigerian bank or an investment firm that is an FMDQ dealing member. Ask whether it distributes CP to individuals, its minimum, its fees and whether it accepts non-resident customers.
  2. Through a money market fund. Many naira money market funds hold CP. ARM's money market fund, for example, held 62.25% in short-term instruments at September 2025, and Stanbic IBTC's money market fund lists CP rated BBB+ among its holdings. A fund spreads issuer risk and has lower minimums, at the cost of fees.
  3. Through a broker or app that resells CP in smaller slices. Check carefully what you actually own: a direct CP holding in your name, or a claim on the platform. Check the platform on the SEC register.

You need a naira account to pay for the CP and to receive the face value at maturity.

How the return works: an example

An example with made-up prices. You buy ₦10,000,000 face value of a 180-day CP at ₦9,300,000:

ItemCalculationAmount
Paid todayDiscounted price₦9,300,000
Received at maturityFace value₦10,000,000
Gain₦10,000,000 − ₦9,300,000₦700,000
Return for 180 days₦700,000 ÷ ₦9,300,0007.53%
Simple annual equivalent7.53% × 365 ÷ 18015.26%
Gain after 10% withholding tax, if applied₦700,000 − ₦70,000₦630,000

Withholding tax: in October 2025 the tax authority directed 10% withholding tax on interest from short-term securities, with corporate bonds, promissory notes and bills of exchange among examples (Reuters via Bizcommunity); KPMG's summary also lists financial papers. Ask the dealer whether it will deduct tax on your CP. This is information, not tax advice.

The risk you carry

With a Treasury bill you are lending to the federal government. With CP you are lending to one company, without security unless there is a guarantee. If the company cannot pay at maturity, you may wait or lose money. The rating is an opinion at issue, not a promise.

  • Read the rating report and the issuer's latest accounts.
  • Check whether the issue is guaranteed, and by whom.
  • Do not put a large share of your savings into one issuer.
  • Confirm the CP is registered and quoted on FMDQ.

Questions to ask a dealer

  1. Is this CP registered and quoted on FMDQ, and will it be held in my name at the depository?
  2. What is your minimum for individual investors, and do you accept customers living abroad?
  3. What are your fees, and is the quoted yield before or after them?
  4. Will you deduct withholding tax, and will I get a tax deduction receipt?
  5. What happens to my money if the issuer pays late?

For lower-risk naira options, see T-bill proceeds when you live abroad and The Ledger's guide to buying Treasury bills.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme does not sell commercial paper. A Pryme naira account, held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, can fund a purchase with your dealer and receive the maturity payment, and Swap converts to pounds, dollars or euros when you choose, with the rate shown first. Open an account from abroad.

Questions people ask

Can Nigerians in diaspora invest in commercial paper?

The rules list non-resident Nigerian individuals among eligible investors. Access depends on an FMDQ dealing member onboarding you.

What is the minimum to buy commercial paper in Nigeria?

The ₦100 million figure is the minimum issue size. Each dealer sets its own minimum for investors.

Is commercial paper safer than Treasury bills?

No. CP is unsecured company debt; T-bills are federal government debt.

How long is a commercial paper in Nigeria?

Between 15 and 270 days.
