Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Funding a relative's farm: a crop-sharing contract

How to set up a written crop-sharing or profit-sharing agreement when you fund a farm in Nigeria run by a relative, and the terms that matter.

The short answer

Put the deal in writing before you send money: who owns or leases the land, what you fund and when, how the harvest or profit is shared, what records the farmer keeps, what happens on crop failure, and how disputes are settled. A clear profit-sharing agreement, paid in stages against evidence, protects both the relationship and the money.

Funding a brother's maize farm or an uncle's cassava plot is one of the most common ways Nigerians abroad invest at home. It is also one of the most common sources of family disputes, because the terms were never written down. A two- or three-page agreement fixes most of that.

Decide which deal it is

StructureHow it worksWho carries the risk
Crop shareAn agreed share of the harvest, for example a fixed fraction of bagsBoth, in proportion; a poor harvest means less for each
Profit shareSales minus agreed costs, split by a ratioBoth; depends on honest records of costs and sales
Loan to the farmerYou lend; the farmer repays with or without interestMainly the farmer; you carry credit risk
You own, relative managesYour farm, your land lease, relative is paid a wage or a shareMainly you

Choose deliberately. A loan treated as a 'share' causes arguments when the harvest fails; a share treated as a loan causes arguments when it succeeds.

Get the land question right

Most family farms sit on customary land. The Land Use Act lets local governments grant customary rights of occupancy for agriculture of up to 500 hectares (section 6), and says non-urban agricultural land held by individuals is treated as held under a customary right and is not to be subdivided or transferred by the holder in ways the Act does not allow (section 36). In practice, funding a farm rarely gives you any interest in the land. Write down who holds the land, that the farmer has the family's permission to farm it for the season or term, and that your money buys inputs and labour, not land. If you want a longer arrangement on land you control, see farmland lease terms.

The clauses to include

  1. Parties and land. Names, the farm's location and size, and who holds the land.
  2. Your contribution. The total, what it covers (land clearing, seed, fertiliser, labour, transport) and a stage-by-stage schedule.
  3. The farmer's contribution. Land, labour, supervision, existing equipment.
  4. Sharing. The ratio, whether it applies to harvest or to profit, and which costs are deducted first.
  5. Records. A simple ledger of every cost and sale, receipts kept, photos at planting, mid-season and harvest.
  6. Selling. Who sells, at what minimum price, and how quickly your share is paid.
  7. Bad seasons. What happens on drought, flood, pests or theft: losses shared in the same ratio, or your money rolled into next season.
  8. Term and exit. One season or several, and notice to end.
  9. Disputes. A named family elder or mediator first, then the courts.

Avoid punitive clauses. A BusinessDay commentary by Broderick Bozimo & Co (October 2025) notes that Nigerian courts enforce a genuine pre-estimate of loss but not a penalty designed to frighten; a 'pay back double' clause is unlikely to help you.

Worked example

Example only, invented figures. You fund ₦3,000,000 of inputs and labour for a season; your cousin provides land, supervision and his own labour. Harvest sells for ₦4,800,000; agreed transport and market costs are ₦300,000. Profit after repaying your ₦3,000,000 is ₦4,800,000 - ₦300,000 - ₦3,000,000 = ₦1,500,000. On a 50:50 profit share you receive ₦3,000,000 back plus ₦750,000, and your cousin receives ₦750,000. If the harvest had sold for only ₦2,700,000, there would be a ₦600,000 shortfall on your capital, and the agreement should already say how that loss is borne.

Making it work from abroad

Agree a reporting rhythm that suits the farm: a message with photos at land preparation, planting, first weeding, fertiliser application and harvest is enough for most crops. Ask for the sales record at the market, not just the final figure. Visit, or send someone neutral, at least once a season. And sign the agreement before the first payment: once money has gone, it is much harder to agree terms.

Tax and registration points

Under section 163 of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, as published by LawGlobal Hub, companies engaged in agricultural businesses, including crop production, livestock and aquaculture, are exempt from income tax for their first five years after starting business. That applies to a company, not an informal family arrangement. If the farm grows, registering a company or cooperative may be worth discussing with an adviser. This is information, not tax advice.

Warning on farm 'investment' schemes

A written family agreement is different from paying into a farm investment platform that promises fixed returns. In 2022 the SEC sealed the offices of Farmforte Agro Allied Solutions (AgroPartnerships) and said it was not registered by the SEC. See warning signs in diaspora investment schemes.

Where Pryme fits

Sending naira in stages, each tied to a milestone, from a Pryme account leaves a payment record for each instalment, and verifiable receipts from VerifyDoc.ai make the farm's ledger easier to check; see verifiable receipts. For the records the farmer should keep, our related guide covers controls for poultry and fish farms, and the Nigeria library has a guide to farm record keeping.

Questions people ask

Do I need a written agreement to fund a family farm?

It is not legally required for every arrangement, but it prevents most disputes. Write down contributions, the sharing ratio, records, what happens in a bad season and how disputes are settled.

Does funding a farm give me rights to the land?

Usually not. Funding inputs and labour does not transfer any interest in customary land. If you want land rights, you need a separate lease or title transaction.

What is a fair profit share for a farm investor in Nigeria?

There is no standard. It depends on who provides land, labour, supervision and capital, and who bears losses. Agree it before planting and write it down.

Are farm businesses tax-exempt in Nigeria?

Section 163 of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 exempts companies in agricultural businesses for their first five years. It does not cover informal arrangements; ask an adviser.
