Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Canada

Which Nigerian banks Canadian remittance apps pay into

Canadian remittance apps pay into most Nigerian banks, but lists differ, especially for microfinance banks. How to check, and what to do if one is missing.

The short answer

Most Canadian remittance apps that serve Nigeria pay into the large Nigerian commercial banks, and many also list microfinance banks and mobile wallets, but each app keeps its own list and it changes. The only reliable check is to start a transfer in the app and search for the bank by name; if it is not there, ask the receiver for an account at a listed bank or use another payout method the app offers.

Why there is no single list

A Canadian app does not pay a Nigerian bank directly from Canada. It works with payout partners in Nigeria, and those partners reach Nigerian accounts through the domestic transfer system. Which banks appear in the app depends on that set-up, so two apps sending the same Canadian dollars can show different lists. Remitly's Canada-to-Nigeria page, for example, offers bank deposit, cash pickup and mobile wallet as delivery methods, and says limits vary by verification, delivery method and destination. It does not publish a full bank list on that page; the list appears inside the transfer flow.

For the receiver this means one practical rule: the bank has to be selectable in the app you are using that day. A bank that worked last year may be renamed, merged or removed, and a new one may appear.

How apps usually present Nigerian banks

  • A drop-down or search box of bank names, sometimes with commercial banks first and microfinance banks and wallets lower down.
  • A 10-digit account number field. Nigerian accounts use the 10-digit NUBAN format; many apps check the number against the bank and show the account name before you confirm.
  • A name check. If the returned name does not match what your relative told you, stop and confirm before paying.
  • Separate options for wallets. Some apps list wallet providers under mobile money rather than under banks, even where the provider also holds a bank licence in Nigeria.

If you want to understand why the 10-digit number can be validated, the Nigeria library explains it in NUBAN explained. For the details your relative should send you, see the receiver details a Canadian sender needs.

Microfinance banks and digital banks

Many Nigerians now bank with microfinance banks and app-based banks. Nigeria licenses microfinance banks at different tiers (unit, state and national), and coverage in Canadian apps is patchier for smaller ones. Larger app-based providers are more often listed. The Nigeria library's guide to microfinance bank licence types explains the tiers.

A second issue is account level. Nigerian accounts sit in KYC tiers with balance and inflow caps. Kuda's help centre, for instance, says a transfer can sit pending when the recipient's account has not been upgraded or is over its limit. A large transfer from Canada into a basic-tier account can therefore stall even when the bank is on the app's list.

If your family's bank is missing

  1. Search again using the bank's full legal name and any older name. Merged banks can appear under the new name only.
  2. Ask the receiver whether they hold, or can open, a second account at a listed bank.
  3. Use the app's other payout methods: cash pickup or a listed mobile wallet, if the receiver can use them.
  4. Do not pick a bank with a similar name in the hope it will route. A transfer to the wrong institution with a valid-looking number is hard to recover.
  5. Contact the app's support and ask whether the bank is supported under another name. Ask in writing so you have a record.

A worked example

Example only: Ada in Calgary wants to send to her brother's account at a small state microfinance bank in Enugu. The bank is not in her app's list. Her brother also has an account at a commercial bank that is listed, so she sends there. The app shows his name when she enters the number, she confirms, and he moves money to his microfinance account locally. The cost is one extra domestic transfer in Nigeria, which his bank shows him before he sends.

What to check first

  • The bank is selectable in the app today, under its current name.
  • The account name shown matches the receiver exactly.
  • The receiver's account tier can take the amount.
  • The payout currency is naira, unless you are deliberately sending to a domiciliary account.

Bank deposit, wallet or cash pickup

If the bank cannot be selected, the payout method matters more than the bank. A bank deposit lands in an account the receiver already uses. A wallet payout lands in a phone-based account that the receiver may need to move to a bank. Cash pickup needs the receiver to travel to an agent with ID that matches the name you entered. Each method can carry a different fee and rate, which the app shows before you approve, so compare them for the same amount rather than assuming one is cheaper.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme is a technology company, not a bank. Outside Nigeria its activities are carried out through regulated partners, and Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. With Pryme Send you pick the recipient's Nigerian bank, see the account name, and the app shows the rate and the fee before you approve. Families who want to hold money in more than one currency can look at the multicurrency account.

Questions people ask

Do Canadian remittance apps pay into microfinance banks in Nigeria?

Many list some microfinance banks, especially the larger ones, but coverage varies by app. Check the bank list inside the app before you promise your relative anything.

Why does my app not show my mum's bank?

Each app keeps its own list based on its Nigerian payout partners. The bank may be listed under a new or merged name, or not supported. Use another account at a listed bank or another payout method.

Can I send to OPay or PalmPay from Canada?

Some apps list them as banks or wallets; some do not. Look for them in both the bank list and the mobile wallet option.

What happens if I choose the wrong bank?

If the number does not exist at that bank the transfer usually fails and is refunded; if it matches someone else's account it may be paid. Contact the app at once and keep the reference.
