Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Microfinance bank licences in Nigeria: unit, state and national

The three CBN microfinance bank licence categories, the two tiers of unit MFB, the minimum capital for each, and how many MFBs were listed in October 2026.

The short answer

Nigerian microfinance banks (MFBs) are licensed by the CBN as unit, state or national MFBs, with unit MFBs split into Tier 1 (urban) and Tier 2 (rural). Under the CBN’s 2018 capital review the minimum capital is ₦200 million for Tier 1 unit, ₦50 million for Tier 2 unit, ₦1 billion for state and ₦5 billion for national MFBs. The CBN list showed 790 MFBs on 17 October 2026.

MFB licence categories and capital

CategoryWhere it may operateMinimum capital (final, 2018 review)Interim level (first deadline, 2020 review)
Unit MFB, Tier 1A single location in urban or high-density banked areas₦200 million₦100 million
Unit MFB, Tier 2A single location in rural, unbanked or underbanked areas₦50 million₦35 million
State MFBBranches within one state (or the FCT)₦1 billion₦500 million
National MFBBranches in more than one state, including the FCT₦5 billion₦3.5 billion

How the categories differ

Unit MFBs

Unit MFBs are the smallest licence. The 2018 review split them into two tiers so that banks serving rural and underserved communities could operate with lower capital than those in cities. A unit MFB that wants to open more branches must meet the capital for a higher category. Tier 1 needs four times the capital of Tier 2 (₦200 million against ₦50 million); a state MFB needs five times the capital of a Tier 1 unit MFB, and a national MFB five times that of a state MFB.

State MFBs

A state MFB can open branches across one state, or across the FCT. It needs five times the capital of a Tier 1 unit MFB, reflecting the larger deposit base it can serve.

National MFBs

A national MFB can operate in more than one state, including the FCT. It carries the highest MFB capital requirement, ₦5 billion, which is still a fraction of the ₦50 billion set in 2024 for a regional commercial bank.

Example: a Tier 2 unit MFB with exactly ₦50 million of capital that wants to open branches across one state would need to reach ₦1 billion to become a state MFB, an increase of ₦950 million. Moving from state to national would need a further ₦4 billion.

What MFBs can and cannot do

  • Can take savings, current and fixed deposits from individuals and small businesses.
  • Can lend, including small and microloans, and provide payment services, often through agents and mobile channels.
  • Are not authorised foreign exchange dealers and cannot offer the full range of commercial banking services; those require a different licence.
  • Must follow CBN prudential rules for MFBs, including limits on lending to single borrowers and liquidity requirements, and report returns to the CBN.
  • Are covered by NDIC deposit insurance up to the limit for MFBs. See NDIC insurance limits.

For how MFBs compare with commercial banks on safety, products and regulation, see microfinance bank vs commercial bank. For the other bank licence categories, see CBN bank licence types.

From community banks to MFBs: a short history

Microfinance banks replaced Nigeria’s community banks under the CBN’s Microfinance Policy, Regulatory and Supervisory Framework of 2005. The policy document explained the change partly by weak capital: the CBN found that only 75 of more than 600 community banks whose 2005 accounts it approved had shareholders’ funds of ₦20 million unimpaired by losses. Community banks were required to convert to MFBs, and the CBN issued processing guidelines for those conversions in June 2007.

YearCBN documentEffect on MFB licences

2011Revised Microfinance Policy FrameworkSet the unit, state and national categories
2018Review of minimum capital requirement for MFBsSplit unit MFBs into Tier 1 and Tier 2 and raised capital for all categories
2020Review of minimum capital requirements for MFBsPhased the 2018 levels in, with deadlines in April 2021 and April 2022

How to check an MFB’s licence

  1. Find the MFB’s full legal name in its app terms, website footer or account opening documents.
  2. Look it up on the CBN’s list of microfinance banks (Supervision, Financial institutions, Micro-finance Banks). Names may be abbreviated, for example “MFB” for “Microfinance Bank”.
  3. Check that the name you see in a transfer’s name enquiry matches the licensed institution or its known trading name.
  4. If the MFB is not listed, or you were told a product is “backed by” a bank that is not named, ask the provider to state the licensed institution in writing.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme Financial Ltd is a technology company, not a bank. Naira deposits in Pryme accounts are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Ltd, which appears on the CBN microfinance bank list as “Solid Allianz MFB” and is insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. See how Pryme works.

How we put this together

The count of 790 MFBs is the number of entries on the CBN’s microfinance bank list downloaded on 17 October 2026; the list does not show each bank’s category, so we cannot give a breakdown by unit, state and national. Categories and capital levels are from the CBN’s Revised Microfinance Policy Framework (2011), its October 2018 review of MFB minimum capital and its April 2020 review that phased in the new levels. The CBN’s PDF server did not allow automated download, so these figures reflect the circulars as published and widely reported at the time.

Questions people ask

How many microfinance banks are in Nigeria?

The CBN’s list showed 790 microfinance banks on 17 October 2026.

What is the minimum capital for a national microfinance bank?

₦5 billion, under the CBN’s 2018 review, which took full effect in April 2022.

What is the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2 unit MFBs?

Tier 1 unit MFBs operate in urban or well-banked areas and need ₦200 million; Tier 2 unit MFBs operate in rural or underbanked areas and need ₦50 million.

Are microfinance bank deposits insured?
