2018OjirehPrime Card

Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

South Africa

Nigerian bank rejected my transfer over a name mismatch

Why Nigerian banks return payments from South Africa when names do not match, the common mismatches, and how to correct and resend without losing more.

The short answer

Nigerian banks check that the name on an incoming payment matches the account name, and may hold or return it if not. Get the exact account name from your relative's bank app or statement, correct the recipient with your provider or bank and resend; a returned payment may come back less charges.

Nigerian banks check that the name on a payment matches the name on the account. If they differ by more than a small amount, the bank can hold the credit, ask questions or return the money to the sender. To fix it, get the exact account name from your relative's bank app or statement, correct the recipient in your app or ask your SA bank to amend or re-send, and expect a returned payment to come back less any charges.

Why names are checked so closely

  • The account record. GTBank's page on foreign currency inward transfers asks for the beneficiary's account name "as captured" on its banking system and says the remitting bank must include the beneficiary's name and account number in the SWIFT message.
  • Remittance rules. MoneyGram's developer documentation for Nigerian bank deposits, modified October 2025, asks for the receiver's first and last name as on the bank statement and the 10-digit NUBAN.
  • Provider practice. Remitly's glossary says banks and pickup agents verify that the name matches "exactly, or very closely", and that wrong details can mean a transfer is delayed, rejected and returned, or in some cases sent to the wrong recipient.

The mismatches that cause most returns

MismatchExampleFix
Order of namesSurname first in the bank, first name first in the appCopy the order the bank uses
Missing middle nameAccount has three names, you typed twoUse all names on the account
Nickname or short form"Bimbo" instead of the full name on the accountUse the legal name on the account
Married or maiden nameAccount still in maiden nameUse the name on the account, not the new one
Business namePaying a shop's account in the owner's nameUse the business name on the account
Wrong account numberOne digit wrong, matching someone elseCheck the 10 digits against a screenshot

Correcting and re-sending

  1. Ask your relative for a screenshot of the account details screen in their bank app, showing the name and number.
  2. For an app transfer still in progress, contact the provider to amend or cancel. Hello Paisa's FAQ says a recipient's account details cannot be edited, so you delete the recipient and add them again, or call its call centre.
  3. For a returned app transfer, check whether the money went back to your card, account or app balance, and re-send to the corrected recipient.
  4. For a SWIFT payment, ask your SA bank whether it can send an amendment while the payment is in transit. If it has been returned, re-send with the corrected name.
  5. Keep the return confirmation. A returned SWIFT payment may come back lower after charges and conversion.

When the name on the account is wrong

Sometimes the problem is on the Nigerian side: the account was opened with a misspelling, or the name does not match the BVN. In that case, your relative must update the bank record before payments will match. BVN name corrections follow CBN rules and need documents; the Nigeria-side steps are in our guide to BVN corrections. Until it is fixed, send to the name exactly as the bank holds it, even if it is misspelt.

A business is a common trap. If you are paying a supplier, a school or a landlord's company, the account name may be the registered business name, not the owner's personal name. Ask for a screenshot of the account name screen, or an invoice on letterhead with the account details, and type the name exactly as shown, including words such as Limited or Enterprises.

  • Do not "correct" a spelling you think is wrong. Use what the bank shows.
  • Avoid initials unless the account itself uses them.
  • Save the recipient once with the right details and reuse it, rather than retyping each time.

Questions to ask your relative before the next payment

  1. What is the account name exactly as your bank app shows it?
  2. Is the account in your personal name, a joint name or a business name?
  3. Is your BVN linked, and does the bank have your current name?
  4. Can the account receive money from abroad, or is it a low-tier account?

How long a return takes

No official timeframe applies to all routes. Remitly says an incorrect account number can add several business days. A SWIFT return passes back through each bank in the chain, so it usually takes longer than the original payment. Ask your provider for a written status rather than waiting.

Where Pryme fits

Paying a relative who uses Pryme through Send shows you the recipient before you approve, and nothing moves until you do. Outside Nigeria, Pryme's activities are carried out through regulated partners. See the Nigerian bank details you need and what to do when a transfer is returned.

Questions people ask

Why was my transfer to Nigeria returned for a name mismatch?

The name you entered did not match the name on the Nigerian account closely enough, so the bank returned it.

Does the name have to match exactly?

Remitly says banks check that it matches exactly or very closely. Use the name exactly as the bank holds it.

Can I edit the recipient's name after sending?

It depends on the provider. Hello Paisa says recipient details cannot be edited; you delete and recreate the recipient.

Will I lose money if my transfer is returned?

Possibly. A returned SWIFT payment can come back lower after bank charges and conversion.
