Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigerian account frozen by a bank while you are abroad: steps

Why Nigerian banks restrict accounts of customers abroad, how to find out the reason, the documents usually asked for and the remote channels to use.

The short answer

Nigerian accounts are most often restricted for missing BVN or NIN links, out-of-date KYC, unusual activity such as foreign logins or card use, a BVN watch-list entry, or a court or law enforcement order. Ask the bank in writing for the reason, send the documents it names through its official channels, and escalate to the CBN's Consumer Protection Department if the bank does not resolve it.

First, find out what kind of freeze it is

"Frozen" covers several different restrictions, and the fix depends on which one applies. Some only stop debits; some stop all activity; some stop a single channel such as the app or card. Before sending documents, ask the bank which restriction is on the account and why.

Likely reasonWhat usually happensWho can lift it
No BVN or NIN linkedPost No Debit or CreditYour bank, once linked
Out-of-date KYCDebits restricted until documents are updatedYour bank
Unusual activityTemporary block, sometimes self-serviceYour bank, after checks
BVN watch-listAccount on Post No DebitThe bank that listed you, then NIBSS
Court or law enforcement orderAccount frozen by orderOnly the order's terms, or the court

Why customers abroad are affected

  • Identity links. TheCable reported in December 2023 a CBN directive that funded accounts without BVN or NIN would be placed on "Post No Debit or Credit" from 1 March 2024.
  • Unusual patterns. Kuda's help page (6 August 2026) lists triggers for blocks, including a foreign card used against your location, an unknown device, a card name mismatch and large sums moving in and out quickly. Logging in from abroad on a new phone can look like these.
  • Watch-list holds. Union Bank's notice on CBN BVN rules effective 1 May 2026 refers to a temporary watch-list hold of at most 24 hours.
  • Dormancy. GTBank treats an account as dormant after a year without customer-initiated transactions; reactivation needs documents.

If it is a BVN watch-list entry

The CBN's BVN framework (as reproduced by Proshare, October 2021) sets out the process. After a breach is established, the account is placed on Post No Debit and the customer is notified by verifiable means within five business days; the customer may submit evidence within three business days. Only the institution that listed a BVN can request delisting, and the customer applies through that institution. Grounds for delisting include an expired term or an erroneous listing. If you think you were listed in error, write to the bank that listed you, quoting the framework.

If it is a court or law enforcement order

A bank cannot simply lift a freeze ordered by a court. LawPavilion's commentary on erroneous transfers notes that freezing orders can be sought ex parte or on notice. If the bank tells you an order is in place, ask for the court, suit number and date, and instruct a lawyer in Nigeria. The BVN framework also says law enforcement access to BVN information requires a Federal High Court order.

A worked example

Example: Femi moves to Houston and logs in to his Nigerian banking app on a new US phone. Two days later a transfer fails and the app says the account is restricted. He emails the bank from his registered address asking for the reason. The bank replies that his BVN and NIN were never linked to this older savings account and that it is on Post No Debit or Credit. He sends his NIN and BVN through the bank's linkage channel, the bank confirms the update, and he tests a small transfer before moving larger amounts. Had the reason been a court order, the same email would have told him to instruct a lawyer instead.

What not to do

  • Do not open a second account to get around the restriction; it may be linked to the same BVN.
  • Do not pay anyone who offers to "clear" your account for a fee.
  • Do not send documents to personal email addresses or social media accounts claiming to be the bank.

Steps to lift a freeze from abroad

  1. Email the bank from your registered address and ask which restriction is on the account, why, and what documents will lift it.
  2. Send only what is asked for, through the bank's official email or app. Access Bank's account management form, for example, has a "PND Lift/Account Unblock" request needing a reason and ID, with diaspora customers giving a passport and a visa or notarised residence permit.
  3. Link your BVN and NIN if that is the cause; see linking an NRBVN to an existing account.
  4. Keep a written record of every exchange and reference number.
  5. If unresolved after two weeks, escalate to the CBN's Consumer Protection Department.

The CBN's complaints page says to complain to the bank first and allow two weeks, then write to the Director, Consumer Protection Department, with your details, the bank, account details (never your PIN or password), the history, the amount and proof that you reported it to the bank first.

For the specific case of a Post No Debit, see lifting a Post No Debit from abroad; to avoid dormancy in future, see keeping an account active while abroad. Our Nigeria library explains KYC tiers and limits.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme uses an authenticator app rather than SMS codes and a transaction PIN, so signing in from abroad does not depend on a Nigerian SIM. See Pryme security.

Questions people ask

Why did my Nigerian bank freeze my account while I am abroad?

Common reasons are missing BVN or NIN links, outdated KYC, unusual activity such as foreign logins, a watch-list entry or a court order. Ask the bank in writing.

Can I unfreeze my Nigerian account without going to the branch?

Often, yes, by sending the documents the bank names by email or app. Court-ordered freezes need legal steps.

How do I complain to the CBN about my bank?

Complain to the bank first and allow two weeks, then write to the Director, Consumer Protection Department, with your evidence.

What is a BVN watch-list?

A database of customers linked to confirmed fraud breaches. Only the bank that listed you can request delisting.
