Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Nigeria bank recapitalisation 2024–2026: rules and tracker

The CBN's 2024 minimum capital rules by licence type, the 31 March 2026 deadline, how banks raised money, and where to check which banks complied.

The short answer

On 28 March 2024 the CBN raised minimum capital to ₦500 billion for commercial banks with international licences, ₦200 billion for national and ₦50 billion for regional banks, with a deadline of 31 March 2026. Only paid-up capital and share premium count. Banks met it through rights issues and public offers, mergers, foreign parents' injections or by moving to a smaller licence; the CBN's own statements are the reference for which banks complied.

This page sets out the rules of the recapitalisation, the timeline and the routes banks used. It is a tracker of verified public facts, not a ranking of banks. Where a bank's final status depends on CBN verification, we say so.

Timeline (as of October 2026)

DateEvent
28 March 2024CBN circular sets new minimum capital; banks given 24 months, to 31 March 2026
April 2024Banks required to submit recapitalisation plans to the CBN
June 2024CBN revokes Heritage Bank's licence (a separate supervisory action)
2024–2025Rights issues and public offers by listed banks on NGX; private placements and parent-company injections at others
31 March 2026Deadline for banks to meet the new minimum
After 31 March 2026CBN verifies capital and announces outcomes, including any mergers, licence changes or other actions

Why the CBN raised the bar

The CBN gave two main reasons. First, the naira's fall since 2023 had cut the dollar value of banks' capital sharply, leaving Nigerian banks small against the loans needed for infrastructure, energy and trade. Second, the Federal Government's goal of a US$1 trillion economy by 2030 would need banks able to lend much more. Larger capital buffers also make banks better able to absorb losses without public support, the lesson of 2009.

What counts as capital, and what does not

The 2024 rule counts only paid-up capital and share premium. Retained earnings, revaluation reserves and other reserves do not count, even though they are part of shareholders' funds. This was the main difference from 2005 and is why even large, profitable banks needed to raise new money. The CBN also said that new capital would be checked to confirm its source, to stop banks lending money to investors who then use it to buy the bank's shares.

How banks raised the money

  • Rights issues and public offers: listed groups including Access Holdings, GTCO, Zenith Bank, FBN Holdings (now First HoldCo), Fidelity Bank and Wema Bank ran rights issues, public offers or both on the Nigerian Exchange in 2024–2025.
  • Private placements and foreign investors: some banks brought in strategic or institutional investors, subject to CBN approval of significant shareholdings.
  • Parent injections: subsidiaries of foreign banking groups could be recapitalised by their parents.
  • Mergers and acquisitions: smaller banks could combine to reach the threshold.
  • Licence change: a bank could apply to move to a lower authorisation (for example from international to national) with a lower minimum.

What the licence types mean

International authorisation
Can operate in Nigeria and set up subsidiaries or branches abroad
National authorisation
Can operate in every state of Nigeria, but not abroad
Regional authorisation
Can operate only in a limited group of states set by the CBN's licensing rules
Merchant bank
Wholesale and corporate banking; cannot take small retail deposits
Non-interest bank
Operates on non-interest principles, such as Islamic finance; national or regional

How to follow the outcome

  1. Read CBN press releases and circulars on cbn.gov.ng, which announce compliance results and any regulatory actions.
  2. Check corporate disclosures on the Nigerian Exchange for listed groups: offer results, allotments, and the CBN's approval of capital.
  3. Read the bank's audited accounts for 2025 and 2026, where paid-up capital and share premium are shown separately from reserves.
  4. For any bank under a merger or licence change, look for a joint announcement by the banks and a CBN approval letter.

What it means for customers

  • Your deposits do not change. Insured deposits are protected by the NDIC up to its limits whatever happens to a bank's capital. See NDIC insurance limits.
  • If your bank merges, your account number usually stays the same for a transition period and the bank tells you of any change.
  • A bank moving to a national or regional licence can still serve you in Nigeria; it may close foreign subsidiaries or branches.
  • To check any bank's licence, see how to check if a bank is licensed by the CBN.

For the earlier exercise, see the 2005 consolidation, when 89 banks became 25.

How we put this together

Rules and dates are from the CBN circular 'Review of Minimum Capital Requirements for Commercial, Merchant, Non-Interest and Payment Service Banks in Nigeria' (28 March 2024) and later CBN statements. Capital-raising exercises are from NGX filings. We have not included figures for how much each bank raised, because amounts changed between offer, allotment and CBN verification. Gap: final post-deadline compliance outcomes could not be verified from a CBN source for this update and are not shown.

Questions people ask

What is the new minimum capital for Nigerian banks?

₦500 billion for international commercial banks, ₦200 billion for national, ₦50 billion for regional and merchant banks, and ₦20 billion or ₦10 billion for national and regional non-interest banks.

When was the bank recapitalisation deadline?

31 March 2026, 24 months after the CBN circular of 28 March 2024.

Is my money safe if my bank did not recapitalise?

Insured deposits are covered by the NDIC up to its limits. The CBN can direct mergers, licence changes or other actions for banks that fall short.

Do retained earnings count towards the new capital?

No. Only paid-up capital and share premium count under the 2024 rules.
