Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Ghana

Can a Nigerian living in Ghana join the NHIS?

What we could confirm about NHIS for non-citizens in Ghana, what an employee already pays towards it, and what to ask an NHIA office before relying on it.

The short answer

Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme is run by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and a Nigerian who is legally resident should ask the NHIA district office directly, because we could not open an official NHIA page in October 2026 setting out the rules for non-citizens. What is confirmed is that a Nigerian employee in Ghana already funds the scheme: 2.5% of basic pay, taken from the Tier 1 pension contribution, goes to the NHIA as the National Health Insurance Levy.

What we could confirm, and what we could not

Searches for the NHIA's own rules on non-citizens returned news coverage and third-party summaries, not an official page we could open. Rather than repeat figures we could not check, this article separates what is documented from what you need to confirm at an NHIA office.

Confirmed
Employees in Ghana contribute to the NHIA through the National Health Insurance Levy carved out of SSNIT Tier 1 (KPMG, 2019).
Confirmed
Non-citizens qualify for a non-citizen Ghana Card after 90 days' cumulative stay or on holding a residence permit (Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, December 2025).
Confirmed
The NHIS card is accepted as an identity document for Ghanaian citizens (same report). It says nothing about non-citizen membership.
Not confirmed
Whether every legally resident non-citizen may register, the premium or fees a non-citizen pays, and the current benefit list.

You may already be paying towards it

If you are employed in Ghana, your employer remits 18.5% of your basic pay in pension contributions (13% employer, 5.5% employee). Of that, 13.5% goes to Tier 1, and SSNIT passes 2.5% of basic pay to the NHIA as the National Health Insurance Levy, according to KPMG's 2019 guide to the expatriate rules. See SSNIT for a Nigerian employee for the full split.

Example only: on a basic salary of GH¢8,000 a month, 2.5% is GH¢200 a month, or GH¢2,400 a year, flowing to the NHIA. KPMG's guide does not say that this levy, on its own, makes you a registered member with a card. That is a question to put to the NHIA.

What to ask at the NHIA district office

  1. Can a non-citizen with a valid residence permit and a non-citizen Ghana Card register, and on what basis (employed, self-employed, student, dependant)?
  2. What premium or registration and renewal fees apply to me, and how often must I renew?
  3. Does my SSNIT contribution count towards my membership, or do I register and pay separately?
  4. What does membership cover, and at which facilities can I use it?
  5. How long after registering can I use the card?

Ask for answers in writing or note the officer's name and the date. Rules for non-citizens may differ between what is printed and what an office applies.

Documents to have ready

The NHIA will tell you its list. Because identity in Ghana now runs through the Ghana Card, have these with you:

  • Your Nigerian passport and a valid Ghana residence permit.
  • Your non-citizen Ghana Card. From 2 February 2026 NIA charges the cedi equivalent of US$120 for a first card and US$78 for annual renewal, as reported by GNA. See non-citizen Ghana Card fees.
  • An employer letter or payslip showing SSNIT deductions, if you are employed.
  • An admission letter and student permit if you are a student.

If NHIS is not available to you, or not enough

The other route is private health insurance, through an employer or bought yourself, either because you do not qualify for the national scheme or because you want wider cover. Compare what a private plan covers against what the NHIA tells you the national scheme covers. Our guide to private health insurance for expatriates in Ghana looks at what to compare.

Before you are covered

Registration takes time, and you may need care before any card is in your hand. Three habits reduce the shock of a bill in the meantime:

  • Keep a cedi buffer for medical costs in an account you can reach on a weekend, not only in savings that take days to release.
  • Ask the clinic or hospital for a written estimate before non-emergency treatment, and an itemised receipt afterwards. Itemised receipts matter if an insurer or employer later reimburses you.
  • If your employer offers medical cover or reimbursement, find out the claim route in your first week, not when you are unwell.

Where Pryme fits

Health insurance premiums and hospital bills in Ghana are paid in cedis. If you are also paying for a parent's care at home, the Pryme app shows the rate and the fee before you approve a transfer to Nigeria, and Nigeria-side options are covered in paying bills in Nigeria from abroad.

Questions people ask

Can foreigners register for NHIS in Ghana?

We could not open an NHIA page confirming the rules for non-citizens in October 2026. Ask the NHIA district office with your residence permit and Ghana Card.

Do I pay NHIS through SSNIT in Ghana?

Employees fund the NHIA through a 2.5% National Health Insurance Levy taken from the Tier 1 contribution, per KPMG. Whether that alone registers you is a question for the NHIA.

Do I need a Ghana Card for NHIS as a Nigerian?

Expect to be asked for it: identity in Ghana now runs through the Ghana Card, and non-citizens qualify after 90 days or on holding a residence permit.

How much is NHIS for a foreigner in Ghana?

We found no official figure we could verify. Ask the NHIA for current premium and renewal fees.
