Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Name change advert in a Nigerian newspaper from abroad

NIS, NIMC and missions ask for a newspaper notice with your change-of-name affidavit. Who needs it, how to place it from abroad, and what to keep.

The short answer

A change-of-name notice in a Nigerian newspaper is a short public advert, placed after you swear a change-of-name affidavit, that NIS lists for passport name changes and NIMC accepts as evidence for a NIN name change. You can place it from abroad by sending the sworn affidavit and the wording to the newspaper's advert desk directly or through a relative or lawyer in Nigeria, then keeping the original printed page, because agencies ask for the newspaper extract itself.

What the notice is for

Nigeria has no single name-change register for individuals. Instead, a change is evidenced by a sworn affidavit plus a public notice in a newspaper, so that anyone who knew you under the old name can see the change. Agencies then accept the pair as proof. The notice is not the change itself; it is the public record that backs the affidavit.

Who asks for it

InstitutionWhen it asksWhat it lists
NIS (passport)Change of name (replacement, addition, deletion, rearrangement) and change of marital statusApplication letter, newspaper publication, court affidavit, plus supporting documents
NIMC (NIN)Name modificationSworn affidavit, newspaper extract or marriage certificate
Consulate, AtlantaCorrection or change on requestCourt order for change of names and newspaper publication
CBN rules for BVNName change for marriage, divorce or religionCertificate, affidavit or newspaper advert (2021 framework, as reported)
Belgian Embassy, AbujaLegalising a name-change affidavitPublic notice published at least 21 days before

Note the limit on the mission side: some missions accept passport name changes only by marriage or divorce and refuse a foreign deed poll (see two passports in different names). For a marriage, NIS asks for a marriage certificate, court affidavit and newspaper publication. For other changes, the affidavit and notice route is the Nigerian route.

Placing the notice from abroad

  1. Swear the affidavit first. Section 110 of the Evidence Act, as summarised in a 2014 Canadian research report, allows affidavits sworn outside Nigeria before a judge, magistrate, notary or an authorised officer at a Nigerian mission. See affidavits sworn abroad.
  2. Choose a national daily. Agencies generally expect a widely circulated newspaper. If the agency you are dealing with names a paper or type, follow it.
  3. Send the wording and affidavit. Most newspapers run classified advert desks that take bookings by email or through agents. Ask for the current rate, the publication date and how you will get the printed page.
  4. Pay and get a receipt in the name on the affidavit.
  5. Get the physical page. Ask a relative to buy two or three copies on the day, or ask the paper to post them. Scans alone may not be enough for every agency.
  6. Wait if needed. If a foreign embassy will legalise the affidavit, Belgium's rule shows some want the notice published at least 21 days earlier.

What the notice should say

Example wording, to adapt to your affidavit:

CHANGE OF NAME. I, formerly known and addressed as Miss Adaeze Ngozi Okafor, now wish to be known and addressed as Mrs Adaeze Ngozi Bello. All former documents remain valid. General public please take note.
  • Every name, in the exact order of the affidavit and your passport.
  • Old name and new name, clearly marked "formerly" and "now".
  • No nicknames or abbreviations that do not appear in the affidavit.
  • Spelling checked twice before you pay; a misprint means paying again.

Mistakes that cost a second advert

  • Notice before affidavit. The advert should refer to a change you have already sworn to. Publishing first and swearing later leaves the dates the wrong way round.
  • Wording that differs from the affidavit. If the affidavit says "Adaeze Ngozi" and the advert "Ngozi Adaeze", you have published a third version of your name.
  • Leaving out a name you are dropping. If a middle name is being removed, the old name in the notice must still show it, or nobody can link the two.
  • Relying on an online-only notice. Some papers sell web-only adverts. Agencies list a newspaper publication or extract, so ask for the print edition.
  • One change at a time. If you are changing a surname by marriage and correcting a spelling at the same time, put both in one affidavit and one notice rather than paying twice.

Marriage is the most common reason for a change. If the only change is taking a spouse's surname, check first whether the agency will accept the marriage certificate alone: NIMC lists a marriage certificate as an alternative to the affidavit and newspaper extract, which can save the advert entirely for the NIN.

After it is published

  1. Update the NIN first, since the passport pulls from it; see NIN modification from abroad.
  2. Then the passport, with the affidavit and newspaper page; see correcting a passport data page abroad.
  3. Then your BVN and each Nigerian bank, with the same pack.

Keep the original page flat and dry, with a few photocopies. You will need it again years later, at renewal or when dealing with property. The Nigeria-side process, including the Gazette route, is in change of name in Nigeria: affidavit, newspaper and gazette.

Where Pryme fits

Newspaper desks and lawyers in Nigeria usually want payment in naira. With Pryme you can hold naira alongside your pounds, dollars or euros, convert with Swap, which shows the rate and the fee before you approve, and pay a Nigerian account with Send.

Questions people ask

Can I publish a change of name in a Nigerian newspaper from abroad?

Yes. Swear the affidavit abroad, send it and the wording to the paper's advert desk directly or through someone in Nigeria, and arrange for printed copies to be bought or posted.

Is a newspaper publication needed for a Nigerian passport name change?

NIS lists newspaper publication with a court affidavit for change of name and change of marital status.

Does NIMC accept a newspaper extract?

Yes. NIMC lists a newspaper extract among the documents for a name modification, alongside a sworn affidavit or marriage certificate.

How long after the advert can I apply to NIS or NIMC?

Neither page we checked sets a waiting period. Apply once you hold the printed page. If a foreign embassy will also legalise the affidavit, check its rule; Belgium wants the notice published at least 21 days earlier.
