Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Keep a naira balance for visits or convert each trip?

Holding naira saves repeated conversion costs but exposes you to depreciation and inflation. How to size a buffer that does not cost you more.

The short answer

Holding naira between visits makes sense when you spend naira regularly, because you avoid paying a conversion margin every trip. It costs you when the naira weakens against your home currency or inflation erodes it faster than any interest you earn; headline inflation was 14.63% in September 2026. Most people do best with a modest naira buffer sized to near-term needs, and the rest kept in their home currency.

The trade-off in one line

Every conversion has a cost: a transfer fee, if any, and a margin between the rate you get and the mid-market rate. Holding naira avoids repeating that cost, but the money then sits in a currency that can lose value against yours and loses buying power inside Nigeria when prices rise. Which cost is bigger depends on how often you visit, how much you hold, how long it sits and what it earns.

What holding naira costs you

Depreciation against your home currency

If the naira weakens while you hold it, the same balance converts back into fewer pounds, dollars or euros. That matters if you might need the money back in your home currency. If you will spend it in Nigeria anyway, the question is less about the exchange rate and more about prices there.

Inflation inside Nigeria

The NBS headline inflation figure for September 2026 was 14.63% year on year, down from 15.39% in August, according to Voice of Nigeria. A naira balance earning nothing therefore buys less each month. Interest on a naira savings product offsets part or all of this, depending on the rate.

What converting each trip costs you

Converting just before each visit means paying the margin and any fee every time, and taking whatever the rate is that week. It also means a delay risk: a transfer that arrives a day late can leave you without naira on arrival. The upside is that your savings stay in your home currency until you need them.

A worked comparison

Example only, with invented figures. Tunde visits three times a year and spends the equivalent of £500 each trip.

  • Convert each trip: if his total conversion cost is 2% of the amount, he pays about £10 per trip, or £30 a year.
  • Hold a year's worth up front: he converts £1,500 once and pays about £30 in conversion cost, the same as before, but now £1,500 sits in naira. If the naira weakens 8% against sterling over the period the money sits there, the part he has not yet spent buys fewer pounds. On the full £1,500, an 8% move (more naira per pound) leaves it worth about £1,389, a fall of about £111.
  • Hold a one-trip buffer: he keeps about £500 in naira at any time and tops it up after each visit. His conversion cost is still about £30 a year, and his exposure is roughly a third of the year-up-front option.

The arithmetic shows why the size and duration of the balance matter more than the decision to hold naira at all. Conversion costs are similar either way if you convert the same total; the difference is how much sits exposed and for how long.

When holding a naira balance is the better choice

  • You have regular naira commitments: allowances to parents, school fees, rent, staff or bills.
  • You visit often and want to land with money ready.
  • The balance earns interest that broadly keeps pace with inflation.
  • You would otherwise convert many small amounts, each carrying its own fee.

When converting each trip is better

  • You visit rarely, so money would sit for many months.
  • You might need the money back in your home currency at short notice.
  • The balance would be large relative to what you spend in Nigeria.
  • You hold it in a non-resident account type whose naira cannot easily be moved back out. Under the CBN's framework for Non-Resident Nigerian accounts, effective January 2025, foreign-currency balances are repatriable without restriction, but naira balances in the investment account can be repatriated only on evidence of prior foreign inflows and related investment proceeds (Mondaq, May 2025).

Practical rules for a naira buffer

  1. Size it to your next three months of naira spending, not a year.
  2. Keep the rest in your home currency and convert when you need to, not on a schedule you feel forced into.
  3. Keep records of each conversion. CBN guidelines reported in June 2026 say visitors can change unused naira back at departure only with evidence of the initial conversion.
  4. Check deposit insurance. The NDIC limit for microfinance bank depositors rose to ₦2,000,000 per depositor from May 2024, according to SCP Law's summary; keep large balances in mind.

For the wider question of which currency to keep savings in, see naira or dollars for savings, and for timing a conversion, when to convert to naira. Leftover naira at the end of a trip is covered in converting naira back.

Where Pryme fits

With a Pryme Personal Account you can keep a naira buffer and your home currency side by side, and move between them with Swap when you decide, seeing the rate and the fee before you approve. Naira you set aside can go into a Savings Box (Flexible, Fixed, Investment or Interest-free), with rates shown in the app. Naira deposits are held by a licensed Nigerian microfinance bank, regulated by the CBN and insured by the NDIC up to the applicable limit. See multicurrency accounts.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to keep naira in Nigeria between trips?

It saves repeated conversion costs only if you would otherwise convert the same money several times. If the naira weakens or prices rise faster than your interest, holding it costs more.

How much naira should I keep for visits?

A common approach is enough for your next few months of naira spending and commitments, topped up as you use it, rather than a full year's worth.

Can I convert naira back to pounds or dollars later?

Usually yes, through an authorised dealer, but documents matter. Keep evidence of how the naira was bought, especially for non-resident account types.

Does my naira balance lose value?

Its buying power in Nigeria falls with inflation (14.63% in September 2026) unless it earns interest, and its value in your home currency moves with the exchange rate.
