Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Loans

Mutual Trust MFB loans: products and who qualifies

How to confirm Mutual Trust Microfinance Bank’s licence, the loan types microfinance banks usually offer, and what to ask at a branch before borrowing.

The short answer

Mutual Trust Microfinance Bank is a microfinance bank, and any microfinance bank lending in Nigeria must hold a CBN licence, which you can confirm on the CBN’s directory of microfinance banks. Microfinance banks typically offer individual, group and small-business loans assessed at a branch; the bank’s own officers set eligibility, amounts and rates, so ask for a written offer showing the full cost before you sign.

First, confirm the licence

Microfinance banks are licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The CBN groups them by category, such as unit, state and national, which limits where each may operate. Before borrowing from Mutual Trust MFB or any similar bank, search its exact name on the CBN’s microfinance bank list and note the category and the address shown.

This check matters because the CBN has revoked microfinance licences in batches over the years, and names that sound alike can belong to different institutions. If the branch you are dealing with uses a slightly different name, ask why. A licensed microfinance bank’s deposits are also covered by the NDIC deposit insurance scheme up to the applicable limit, which you can confirm on the NDIC website.

Loan types microfinance banks usually offer

We could not find a current public product page for Mutual Trust MFB, so the list below describes the products Nigerian microfinance banks commonly offer. Ask the bank which of these it provides now.

Individual loans
For traders, artisans and salary earners, often requiring a guarantor and an account with the bank.
Group loans
Lent to members of a group or cooperative who guarantee each other, usually with weekly repayments.
SME loans
For registered businesses, assessed on cash flow, with documents such as CAC papers and bank statements.
Salary or payroll loans
For employees whose salary passes through the bank, repaid from salary.
Asset loans
For equipment or stock, sometimes with the asset as security.

Who usually qualifies

Eligibility is set by each bank. In practice, microfinance banks commonly ask for:

  • An account with the bank, often opened some weeks before the loan.
  • BVN, a valid ID and proof of address.
  • One or two guarantors, sometimes with their own ID and a signed form.
  • Evidence of income: a shop, a salary, or a group record of savings.
  • For business loans, CAC registration and recent bank statements.

Some banks ask you to hold a percentage of the loan as savings during the term. That reduces the money you can use while you still pay interest on the full amount, so include it in your calculations.

Worked example: the effect of compulsory savings (illustrative)

A trader is offered ₦200,000 for six months at an example flat rate of 3% a month on the full amount, and must keep an example 10% (₦20,000) in savings until the end. Interest is ₦200,000 × 3% × 6 = ₦36,000. The trader can use ₦180,000 but pays ₦36,000 for it. The ₦20,000 savings comes back at the end, so the net cost is ₦36,000 on ₦180,000 of usable money, which is 20% over six months, higher than the headline 18%.

Microfinance bank loan or loan app?

A branch loan takes longer to arrange than an app loan: forms, guarantors and a visit from a loan officer are common. In exchange, amounts are often larger, tenors longer and the loan officer can explain the terms face to face. App loans are smaller and faster but usually short, which means the cost per month can be high if you roll them over. For a trader who needs stock money for several months, a microfinance bank loan is often the better fit; for a small gap of a few days, it is usually too slow.

  • Speed: app loans are quicker; branch loans take days or weeks.
  • Size and tenor: branch loans are usually larger and longer.
  • Paperwork: branch loans need guarantors and documents; apps rely on data.
  • Conversation: a branch gives you a person to negotiate with if things go wrong.

Questions to ask at the branch

  1. What is the total amount I will repay, in naira, including every fee?
  2. Is interest calculated on the full amount (flat) or on the reducing balance?
  3. How much savings or security must I hold, and when is it returned?
  4. What happens if I pay late: what charges, and when?
  5. Will this loan be reported to credit bureaus?
  6. Can I have the offer letter to read at home before signing?

Write the answers down, or ask for them in the offer letter, so you can compare them with any other offer you receive.

For how lenders use bureau records, see credit bureaus in Nigeria, and for comparing flat and reducing-balance quotes see APR versus a flat fee. To check any lender’s licence step by step, read how to check a CBN licence.

Where Pryme fits

Pryme works with a microfinance bank too: Naira deposits are held by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank, which also lends Loans on Spaces, spent only with Spaces merchants and accepted by you only after the full agreement is shown.
