Questions

The things people ask us first.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives people and businesses in Nigeria one account that holds Naira alongside dollars, pounds and euros, and a set of agents that do the running of it — keeping the books, chasing what is owed, answering customers and paying bills. Nothing leaves an account without the owner’s approval.

Can I hold dollars, pounds and euros in a Pryme account?

Yes. A Pryme account holds Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros side by side on one ledger, each with its own account details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area. You can swap between them at a rate you set, and every currency has its own statement.

What is Spaces?

Spaces is available in Nigeria. It gives a shopper money to spend that can only be spent with a participating business. The business is paid into its Naira account whether or not the shopper repays, because Pryme carries the credit. For the business it is free to join, there is nothing monthly, and the customer’s identity is never shown — only a reference and what it is worth.

What do the agents on a Pryme Business Account do?

Five agents come with the account. The Chief of Staff runs the week and keeps what is stuck moving. Finance watches the money and keeps the books as you trade. Compliance keeps the filings on time and screens what moves. Sales chases what you are owed. Customer Support answers your customers and follows up. Each has a job description, a budget and a ceiling you set, and each one proposes rather than acts — nothing leaves the account without your signature.

How does Pryme Pay work?

Pryme Pay takes payments on your own site or on a checkout page you control. The buyer is given a one-time account number and transfers to it from any bank app or by USSD — no card, no OTP, nothing to type in. The money lands in the same account your agents are running, already matched to the order and already in your books.

What are Savings Boxes?

Savings Boxes are separate pots inside a Pryme account, held in Naira. Flexible Boxes can be withdrawn at any time, Fixed Boxes hold to a date, Investment Boxes hold for longer, and Interest-free Boxes earn nothing by design. A business can use them to ring-fence payroll and the tax it withholds, so that money cannot be spent by accident.

Who holds my money, and is it protected?

Pryme is a financial technology company, not a bank. Accounts and deposits are provided by Solid Allianze Microfinance Bank Limited, which is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and is a member of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation.

Can I build on Pryme?

Yes. Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

What is Pryme?

Pryme is a financial technology company. It gives you one account that holds US dollars, pounds sterling and euros beside Naira, with an assistant that runs the account for you and asks before anything moves. Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, and further markets open as each licence lands.

Can I open a Pryme account from outside Nigeria?

Accounts are provided in Nigeria today, subject to verification and approval. Foreign-currency balances are held and converted inside that account, so you can hold, receive and swap dollars, pounds and euros wherever you are.

Which currencies can I hold with Pryme?

Naira, US dollars, pounds sterling and euros, side by side on one ledger. Each has its own details — a Nigerian account number, a US account number, a UK sort code and an IBAN for the euro area — and each has its own statement.

How do I send money to Nigeria with Pryme?

Swap at a rate you set rather than the rate of the day, then send to any Pryme username or to a Nigerian bank account. There is no fee to send to another Pryme account.

What does the assistant do?

Eva is the assistant inside the Pryme app. She opens accounts, moves money, saves toward your goals, pays what is due and follows up what is owed to you — and asks you before anything moves.

What is Pryme Rails?

Pryme Rails lets a platform issue a dedicated Naira account number to each of its own customers, collect into it and reconcile against it, over one API — the same rails the Pryme Business Account runs on.

Monthly budget for a family of four in Nigeria (example)

A labelled ₦650,000 budget for two adults and two children: rent and school fees spread monthly, food, power, health cover and a savings line.

The short answer

In our labelled example, a family of four with ₦650,000 take-home pay can cover rent, two children's school fees, food, power, health cover and a small savings line, but only by treating yearly bills as monthly ones. Rent and school fees together take about a third of income, and food takes another quarter.

The household in this example

Two working parents and two primary-school children in a city, renting a two-bedroom flat. Combined take-home pay is ₦650,000 a month. Every figure below is an example; replace each with your own. If your income is lower, the order of priorities still holds.

Yearly bills, spread monthly

The two biggest costs arrive as lumps. Rent is commonly demanded yearly; in Lagos, the Tenancy Law 2011 makes it unlawful to demand more than a year in advance from a new tenant, according to Ownkey's summary of section 4. School fees arrive each term. Both must be saved monthly, or they become loans.

Lump (labelled example)YearlyMonthly set-aside
Rent, two-bedroom₦1,500,000₦125,000
School fees, ₦180,000 per child per term, two children, three terms₦1,080,000₦90,000
Health cover (family HMO plan)₦450,000₦37,500

On health, KPMG's summary of the 2024 Lagos Executive Order lists the Ilera Eko Standard Family plan at ₦40,000 for a family of principal, spouse and four children, while NairaCompare's June 2026 report gives ₦300,000 to ₦700,000 a year as the range for a standard private family plan. Choosing the state plan would free about ₦34,000 a month in this budget; see budgeting for health costs.

The full monthly budget (labelled example)

Total₦650,000100%

The shares are each line divided by ₦650,000 and rounded to one decimal place, so they add to 99.9% rather than exactly 100%.

Food for four

Our food budget guide builds a one-adult basket from NBS prices at about ₦61,000 a month when cooking at home. Four people sharing meals, two of them children, need less than four times that because staples are bought in bulk; ₦170,000 allows for school snacks and the occasional meal out. NBS prices from April 2026, reported by NAN, put brown beans at ₦1,338.93 a kilo and palm oil at ₦2,396.32 a litre; check your market every few months.

Power

Power is the most variable line in many homes. The ₦45,000 here covers prepaid electricity and some generator fuel. A household on a band with long supply hours might spend less; one relying on a generator may spend far more. Track it for three months before fixing the figure.

Who pays which line

With two earners, decide who covers what. One common approach is to put every line above into a shared pot funded in proportion to each income; another is to assign whole lines, such as rent to one partner and school fees to the other. Either works if it is written down and reviewed. See budgeting on two incomes.

Lines that often surprise families

  • School extras outside the fee: uniforms, books, PTA levies, excursions and end-of-year parties. See back-to-school costs.
  • Festive season travel and gifts, which can equal a month's food budget.
  • Generator repairs and servicing.
  • Children's medical costs outside the health plan, such as some drugs and tests.
  • Visiting relatives who stay for weeks.

None of these is unusual, but each can wreck a month if it was not planned. A family that pays them from a dedicated line rarely needs to borrow for them, and the savings line stays intact for real emergencies. Keep a simple list of the surprises from the past year; it is the best guide to next year's.

Add a small monthly sinking line for any of these that hit your household every year, rather than paying them out of the month they arrive.

What gives when money is short

  1. Protect rent and school fees first; missing them has the biggest consequences.
  2. Then food and health.
  3. Cut transport by sharing school runs with another family.
  4. Reduce TV and data subscriptions.
  5. Reduce savings temporarily, but keep a small amount going so the habit survives.

Build in a buffer

The ₦44,500 savings line builds ₦534,000 a year. Aim first for one month of the essential lines, then three. A family with an emergency fund can absorb a broken generator, a hospital visit or a late salary without a loan. Prices also move: the NBS put headline inflation at 14.63% year on year in September 2026, so review every line at least twice a year. For term-by-term planning of the fees line, see saving for school fees.

Where Pryme fits

Separate naira Savings Boxes can hold the rent, school-fees and emergency pots, and electricity and cable TV can be paid in the app. Schools are among the sectors in Spaces.

Questions people ask

How much does a family of four need per month in Nigeria?

It varies widely by city, rent and schools. Our labelled example uses ₦650,000 take-home to cover rent, two children's fees, food, power, health and savings.

How much should a family spend on food in Nigeria?

In our example, ₦170,000 a month for four, about a quarter of income. Track your own spending for a month to set the figure.

How do I budget for school fees monthly?

Add up the year's fees and divide by 12, then save that amount every month so each term is already funded.

What percentage of income should go to rent?

Aim for about a quarter or less of take-home pay. In our example rent is 19.2%.
